>>558859 They were a nation with old equipment and few resources, but chockful of experienced veterans who knew exactly how to fight in their country and took all the advantages of the situation in a very admirable way. They also had a lot of brit resource support, but really they should have committed men if they wanted to help. As it was, the intervention was a total waste of effort for the brits, so much that they even had to spawn the propaganda meme "we slowed down the invasion of Russia" which has no historical basis whatsoever, since the delay had to do with eastern european infrastructure and not the necessity to commit resources to other fronts. On the italian side of the situation, you have a bunch of mostly untrained and badly equipped conscripts sent to die in the hills without a real invasion plan, because like most italian offensives in ww2, the decision to invade Greece was just a panicked attempt at keeping a shred of a check to german expansionism rather than a calculated effort at enlarging Italy, so it's not surprising that it ended in shit.
>>558859 They had a based Orthodox Church. >Send letter to Hitler telling him to stop killing Jews >Forge fake baptism certificates for Jewish population >When a town's Jewish population was ordered to show up for detainment, the only people who showed up where the mayor and the priest. >When threatened with execution via firing squad, the patriarch responded "It is tradition for patriarchs to be hung, not shot"
On the battle of the Metaxas Line, when Germans decided to help Italians (Wiki)
The Metaxas Line was a chain of fortifications constructed along the line of the Greco-Bulgarian border. It was named after Ioannis Metaxas, then Prime Minister of Greece, and chiefly consists of tunnels that led to observatories, emplacements and machine-gun nests. The constructions are so sturdy that they survive to this day.
The Metaxas Line consists of 21 independent fortification complexes, the largest of which is Fort Roupel as it covers 6.1 out of the 155 km of the full line and had been constructed at a height of 322 m. The fortification works lasted four years and their cost at the time reached 100,400,000 drachmas
Like the Maginot Line on the Franco-German border, the Metaxas Line was outflanked by German forces specifically when the Germans invaded Greece in April 1941 through Yugoslavia. The German XVIII Mountain Corps and XXX Army Corps attacked the Metaxas Line before dawn on 6 April, but they encountered fierce resistance under the leadership of Brig. General Konstantinos Th. Bakopoulos, and after three days of fighting they had only limited successes. The 2nd Panzerdivision XVIII Mountain Corps with an enveloping move crossed the Yugoslavian borders, overcame Yugoslav and Greek resistance and captured Thessaloniki οn the 9th of April. The capture of Thessaloniki forced the Greek East Macedonia Army Section to surrender on the 10th of April and the Metaxas Line battle was over.
German General Wilhelm List, who led the attack against the Metaxas Line, admired the bravery and courage of these soldiers. He refrained from taking the Greek soldiers prisoner and declared that the army was free to leave with their war flags, on condition that they surrender their arms and supplies. He also ordered his soldiers and officers to salute the Greek soldiers . The line was also poorly manned as most of the Greek Army was fighting against the Italians, on the Albanian frontier.
>>558859 For a small nation they extracted quite a lot of blood from Germany, Crete was also a total fucking disaster (though mostly fought by British and Australians) that made Hitler never authorize an airborne assault again
>>562530 As Germans were retreating due to the Eastern front defeat, communist partisans had gained control of greek mainland, attackng nazis and greek collaborators. Brits made an actual invasion in Athens in 1944 along with the goverment-in-exile. Those events resulted to the greek civil war.
