What is /his/'s opinion on this show? It seems quite accurate and interesting while none of the "Gurl power" and " muh viking badassery" shit you see on its American History channel counterpart ..
by the American counterpart I mean this bullshit
I think it's badly written with a Mary Sue protagonist, but some of the historical events seem accurate. The buildup to Edington and most of the battle itself (i.e. the stuff that excluded Uthred) was very authentic.
I hear a lot about the Saxons' arms and armor being inaccurate. They don't have the signature square shields.
The narrative is okay (based off the novel of the same name), but the acting is bland, and the costumes are *atrocious*. Seriously. The aesthetic of this show looks like some fucked up bastard child of 12th-early 13th century England and bootleg Game of Thrones. almost nothing looks appropriate to the early Middle Ages, but at least they have LOTS OF FUR EVERYWHERE.
Fantasy shows of this nature are less likely to gain popularity. Game of Thrones is a rare example. I think the aim is to attract a historical-minded fanbase while including the usual elements of a swashbuckiling-sword adventure film that appeals to the general public.
>Saxons also some reason look like english after norman conquest
I'd imagine that has to do with the actors available to them. I'm sure its not easy finding pure blooded north Germanics in the UK
A tunic as in the picture, trousers or hose, and maybe a cloak with a brooch. For warriors, a tunic, helm, mail byrnie, and sword-belt, depending on rank (again, as in the picture). I'm a PhD candidate in the period, so I could nerd-rage about minutia until the cows come home (ex. the subtle differences between North Germanic and insular garb or the differences between various classes' clothing), but I'd like to see at least *some* attempt at generic accuracy.
They don't only look post-conquest, they look REALLY post-conquest. Like, mid-to-late twelfth-century, or even early thirteenth-century. It's not as bad as sticking Arthur in full plate, but it's still cringe-worthy.
afaik King Alfred is depicted wearing clothing like the King in pic related- but soldiers are depicted in a shit ton of fur and
leather for some reason.
The monk haircut honestly triggers my autism
>He is a massive dick.
that's the point, you aren't supposed to like him. In the books it's tempered because it's 1st person with old Uhtred and he keeps saying how much of a twat he used to be
LMFAO when anyone even remotely implies "Vikings" isnt the greatest show on TV. Top to Bottom, best show on TV. Literally
and the knock on the "muh girl power" is fucking dumb, most come from millenials and their taste in Zooey Daschenel or "2 broke girls" modern city whore shit.
its not fantasy you fucking idiots. How do millenials have such a hard time with reading or visual comprehension? HOW?
Vikings is akin to "Troy" or something of that nature. Its Norse Mythology intertwined with psuedo and real history.
its not some gay as fuck Dragon taming girl sex show. or some lord of the rings faggotry. Game of Thrones is maybe the most into-the-trash TV ever produced.
full-on Berserker right now, when people talk shit about the greatest TV show ever produced.
Confirmed for never seeing an episode of the show even one. How fucking brainwashed are you millenials? The women literally get their faces smashed in combat and the show makes an example of how brutal Viking Raiding really were. The Women get over powered, raped, killed ,wounded and destroyed in many of the episodes.
LITERALLY the only shield maiden in the show that have "woman power" is Lagertha, and shes based on a norse mythological character. Good god mellenial comprehension of what they are watching is the lowest tier.
the conclusion to the "shield maiden" story arc.
whitest show on TV.
history and mythology in 44 minutes
the christ god
off the top of my head:
4 wife beatings
3 women mutilated
6 plus violent female character deaths.
a number of children killed on screen
3 females cucked to their face by males
and those were signifigant story events, happened on camera, and had no happy resolution.
if anything, Vikings is so anti-sjw im surprised its even still onTV. They literally see Lagertha, stop watching the show, and never see what ACTUALLY is happening in the series.
I literally said it is as historically accurate as "Troy" .
over and over again, millennial reading comprehension is embarrassing.
Vikings inserts Norse mythological figures, into events like the real life Raid on lindesfarme, Paris, the occupation of Wessex and Northumbria, the establishment of Normandy etc.
its literally impossible to have discussions with millennials. You lack the basic comprehension skills to read and react to stimuli properly.
Fuck off with your shilling of your trash show. Wearing helmets from the sixteenth century in a Viking show is the equivalent of Napoleon crossing the alps in a panzer. Stop trying to deflect with muhlennials you stupid faggot.
show me the helmet. Literally show me. Literally find the exact episode or jpeg where this is.
Typical millennial. Bleets like baying donkey about something that never happened, has not a shred of evidence.
Thread got BTFO'd by Vikings. going to the Ting' later dragon tamers.
Wait so is it really becoming a thing were we wan't enjoy a show because it has one or 2 "strong female characters" in it? Really? You are all literally the equivalent of a tumblrite who refuse to watch a show because one of the main characters is a misogynist. Fucking go to hell.
>Wait so is it really becoming a thing were we wan't enjoy a show because it has one or 2 "strong female characters" in it? Really?
I dont mind strong female characters, i dont even mind the occasional female warrior (Eg Lagertha). But all the 5'4 120lb sheildmaidens scowling at everyone is annoying as fuck.
>I'm a PhD candidate in the period
>I could nerd-rage about minutia
What would be the best way to balance a limited budget with historical accuracy?
If, for example, they can't afford handmade chainmail and instead use some chrome sprayed wool I don't think it is worth raging over. The point is it is supposed to look like what they actually wore in that era. The intention is what matters.
People watch historical drama because they are interested in history, even with spartacus I think people want to see a little history. If execs were approached with letters from fans and experts with an amiable approach taking into account the practicality, as opposed to raging nerds, you could probably influence things more. They might even start hiring historians to instruct them a little.
because the show was very explicit in showing the character arc of the "run of the mill" shield maiden. It was a main plot point.
millenaial reading comprehension: the thread
>because the show was very explicit in showing the character arc of the "run of the mill" shield maiden. It was a main plot point.
Dat 'run of the mill' shieldmaiden beating men in a fair fight.
Like i said i dont mind the occasional female hero warrior. Its when they try making it looks standard that bothers me.
why no one in Vikings wear hemlets? There is one in the fucking intro an actual one not that horned helmet bullshit why are helmets such taboo in this show? Also did villages really had so many soldiers? Seems highly unlikely vikings met anyone other than guys with pitchforks when they raided.
>it's bad because it's historically inaccurate
Pretty much all of then. They were so lame to watch plus there were so few of them. And no Idont want Sparticus and 300 teir fx.
I understand that a lot if money already went into the setting and costume designs but c'mon...

They're litterally burgonets too. Down to the hinges.
Presumably they went to some reenactment suppliers (GDFB by the looks of it ) and bought ones they thought looked cool, which is an odd choice given that there are far more interesting looking repro viking helmets available for much cheaper.
>fucking underwear model looking dude as some old chiftein or king...
You know, unlike today it mattered really little if you were good looking back then.
It is very hard to believe that most leaders looked pretty according to contemporary standards.
They were also fucking dirty, especially the savage Europeans, not like this legolas look alike.
Pretty sure all europeans were according to our standards.
They most they did on a daily basis was wash their face and hands with water if they were dirty in a substantial way, like mud feces or blood.
Besides that, they probably were accustomed to being filthy since there was no plumbing.
They had no toilet paper either.
I thought this has been debunked?
People read that they only "bathed" once a month, therefore must have been dirty. Where really they bathed once a month but washed with a rag as often as modern people shower and washed their hands frequently too.
Yes, because they don't look anything like Vikings unless you're a retarded troglodyte who knows nothing about history like yourself.
Vikings is purely a show for uneducated plebs who are too stupid to realize how retarded the show is. The only reason why they get away with it is because the general public knows nothing about vikings. The equivalent would be a Civil War show with people running around in modern graphic t-shirts, and that would have the American public lynching somebody.
Double trips fucking checked
He was a real life Mary Sue. Go's from being born as a minor noble and lives a life so legendary and epic that millennia later, his name is a fucking byword for king/emperor.
While the inconsistencies bug the shit out of me, I love a bunch of /hi/-related /tv/ shit.
Pic related is my favorite film, I must have watched it 5-6 times.
follow up. Am turning into a Saxon-boo because of these shows and also sympathize with Saxons against Danes. However, should I stop because the descendants of Saxons colonized my country (Indian Subcontinent )?
I can't take these shows seriously when they don't seem to put enough effort into their productions. I'm not talking about sets or costumes but the way the picture looks on the screen.
Alexander is the only piece of media where they wear historically authenic garb/armor/clothing. Telievision shows have low standards since their average viewers are uneducated inbreds. HBO Rome is fucking shit with Asterix tier Romans and bronze age gauls with fantasy easterners. Egypt is full of niggers even though Kleopatra had Galatian bodyguarda and Macedonians filled the normal army. Herod the great is dresses like Schlomo Goldstein even though he was a graeco/romanboo who dressed like a Greek and gave his sons Greek names.
The directors cut is pretty good. I'd say the movie suffered from trying to fit Alexanders life in one movie and the bad casting. Incredibly fun seeing historical characters like Craterus and Perdicas tho.
> It seems quite accurate and
Good one. Good one, OP.
