I've heard that Japan was very sexually open until western influence turned them uptight. Particularly, I've heard it said that homosexuality was honorable and accepted.
Is this a white guilt meme or is it accurate?
Love between men and young boys was common and a natural/expected relationship between a lord and his ward.
Cases of extreme loyalty were even romanticized by the Japanese such as the case of Mori Ranmaru and Oda Nobunaga.
During the Edo period Japan was pretty open about sexuality especially in artwork. Homosexual and bisexual relationships weren't frowned on like most other places. That came to a halt during the Meiji Restoration in the 1800's but even those effects are exaggerated.
That changed again during the 1920's and 30's when fetishes became a huge topic in Japanese magazines due to the explosion of Japanese prostitution across China and Korea.
Things now are basically where they were during the Edo period. For men promiscuity is almost expected but getting caught is a huge failure and can get you black balled. Prostituition is still legal and as I'm sure everybody knows Japan is fairly open about its fetishes.
Anyway, the topic of sexuality in Japan is a lot more complex than "it's the white people's fault." don't let anybody say otherwise.
>I've heard that Japan was very sexually open until western influence turned them uptight.
Not really. Traditional East Asians tend to be bigger prudes than Europeans even. Don't let the LE PORNOGRAPHY TRADITIONAL ART :DDD Fool you. The courtship scene is heavily regulated by parents.
That said nobody looked down on going to whores anyway.
As far as I understand aristocrats sometimes had male concubines and lovers, and noone could stop them, because they were rich! Like in China. However you were expected to take a wife and have kids regardless, kind of like modern day Japan. Male love ultimately was probably a bit hush hush, but not that uncommon. Was probably just treated as some fun on the side (of marriage).
But that's basically how Greek and even Rome to an extent was. Oh wait, that's before Christianity!
Anyway, it's important for OP to not fall into the "progressive" history pipe dream by relating it to sexuality. Societies were very sexually liberal from one time or another and policies varied. As one anon points out, prostitution was never completely looked down upon yet the amount as well as homosexuality. However, never in any culture were their marriages allowed ( the point of marriage was "muh legitimate children" basically). Adultery was still always very bad and for the longest time, was only define strictly as : sex with a married woman. As someone once told me, the sexual liberation of a society is not a measure of it's progression.
Well, sexual liberation is correlated with smaller family sizes and lower birth rates, which means higher per capita standards of living.
On the other hand, it can also produce single parent households, which suck.
The secret is to not be poor. Sexual liberation for the upper and middle classes means high standards of living, large amounts of consequence free sex, and then a stable, productive marriage.
For the lower class, it means being trapped in poverty by dumb bitches who shouldn't have kids but do anyway.
Eventually, the upper class ends up being out bred by the lower class though.
At best it's a minor measure but definitely not a major, let alone, defining one.
Are we talking about sexual liberation where there is effective birth control too btw?
All these fucks are always talking about knights vs samurai
but they never talk about a knight fighting alongside a samurai against evil. Make this game, you fucking faggots.
In some ways. It wasn't meaningfully different from the ancient Greco-Roman world in terms of sexuality. There was definitely more general lewdness and homosexual activity behind closed doors, but it was less open than in our society.
Appearances were very important. A shogun might stick his dick in a boy more nights than he stuck it in his wife, while she slept with whatever men or women in his court she desired, but in public they would always present themselves as dutifully married and faithful. You'd never see a woman aside from a literal prostitute who self-identified as a slut, or a man who waving around a rainbow flag and shouting about gay pride.
