the british double-crossed the arabs. first they made the sharif of mecca revolt against the ottomans while promising him a united arab state including the arabian peninsula, mesopotamia and the levant while at the same time dividing that territory up into zones of influence together with the french and also promising the jews a homeland in palestine. after the war the arabs got nothing of what they were promised. the sharif's sons were made kings in british and french mandate territories but they had no real power and there was never a united arab state. the sharif refused to sign the treaties, so the british dropped their support for him and his kingdom in the hejaz was overrun by the saudi wahhabi fanatics from the central desert who were supported by britain and had already conquered the eastern part of the peninsula.

it's basic structure is based on an alliance between the radical preacher muhammad ibn abd al-wahhab and the bedouin tribal leader al sa'ud. the al sa'ud family gives the wahhabi sect control of religious and cultural affairs in exchange for legitimacy and support. since religious fanatics control all aspects of civil society, the populace is driven to fanaticism itself.

internally the alliance between sa'ud and abd al-wahhab held reasonably well over the generations though it is probably unsustainable in the long-term.
economically, oil wealth is a big factor in artificially creating stability.
internationally its major backbone is the paradoxical alliance with the US which provides arms and buys oil.

Jump back 250 years. There's this tribe in central Arabia led by this guy named Ibn Saud. There's this cleric named Wahhab who thinks that we should only follow what's in the Quran and skip all the later bullshit. They make a deal; Ibn Saud will keep Wahhab's followers safe, and in turn they'll support his rule.

During the First World War, the British promised some guys in Hedjaz (the part with Mecca, aka the single most holy site in Islam) that they would support a united Arab state if the Hedjazis fought against the Ottomans. However, the Hedjazis forgot they were dealing with Anglos, so after the war, Britain stepped back and let the Saudis take over Hedjaz. The Saudis have been buddy-buddy with the West ever since.

Remember that Wahhab dude's followers? Yeah, they're pretty influential. So influential that if they all hated the Saudis and wanted to overthrow them (or at least destabilize the country), they totally could. SO, the Saudis turn a blind eye to where some of the wealthy Wahhabis are sending money; they don't want to make themselves targets. Back in 1979, some nutjobs claimed they found the Mahdi (the guy Muslims say will precede Jesus's return) and took over the Grand Mosque of Mecca. After taking them down, the Saudi King started passing more religion-based laws to help keep the peace (e.g., women can't drive or leave the house unaccompanied). They know the problem is because of all the Wahhabi clerics, but they're not doing anything about it because there's the very real possibility that they turn against the Saudis and start a civil war.

Because the Saudis are still friends with the West. They're the largest stable power in the Middle East whose ruler doesn't despise us with a burning passion. We have military bases there we used to launch Desert Storm and OEF. If we let them fall, it would be orders of magnitude worse than Iraq in '03.
