Apologetics thread with a twist.
Explain the murderous and savage nature of God while respecting scripture doing so:
Proverbs 30:6
Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
You can't, if you follow his rules you cannot defend his case.

Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Gird up your loins like a man,
I will question you, and you shall declare to me.
Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone
when the morning stars sang together
and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?
God doesn't give a FUCK about your perceived injustices.

Historically how OP was the plague?
>>2950970
pretty OP
>>2950970
The black plague is the scourge of the human race. Most people only think it came about that one time, because of the Mongols, but it's actually been 3 recorded outbreaks of it. As well as multiple in ancient history that are unconfirmed if i'm not mistaken.

Unbelievably OP
Imagine this: your entire village has been wiped out; let's say you had the good sense to know god wasn't really happy with your people (the only way to rationalize it, which isn't exactly a comforting rationalization), so you hid in a root cellar alone for weeks at a time as you heard the moaning and weeping of the people uptop, their bodies shutting down entirely as they watch themselves and their loved ones die. You come up, the pestilence very much in the air: animals, livestock, people, all dead and foul. You don't know that you shouldn't touch them, but you don't want to smell them so you keep your distance. But the smell of pure putrid and vile death is in the air, inescapable, hanging like a thick fog. No one remains. You decide to go see what the fuck is happening. As you walk to the nearest next village, you're seeing everyone dead: knights sharing repose with commoners, priests and whores falling atop one another in their final moments. Every village you visit is literally fucking empty of people, except for the odd stray dog.
That's not even the worst part, because now that the law and order of the feudal system is on its ass, people are desperate and people are oppurtunistic. What few living people you find will either be bandits taking residence in the newly emptied halls of their former lordly enemies, or raving mad men broken by what they have seen.
And going to the cities isn't much better: sure, people are alive, but only just. The king has probably shut the gates if he knows what's good for him, the town guard is killing the sick and burning them in their houses, and refugees are infecting themselves outside the gates as they claw for their lords and gentry to help them.
But like... how bad was the Battle of Stalingrad?
>Marked by fierce close quarters combat and direct assaults on civilians by air raids, it is often regarded as one of the single largest (nearly 2.2 million personnel) and bloodiest (1.7–2 million wounded, killed or captured) battles in the history of warfare.
>>2950834
Think death and destruction on an industrial scale
>>2950834
>how bad was the Battle of Stalingrad?
Depends on the phase.
The first phase was mostly city fighting, and that got pretty bad for a variety of factors. The Luftwaffe bombed the city to ruins, but their bombing failed to really prevent the city from being defensible. They could provide close support at times, but the Soviets found that by keeping close to German forces, they could prevent the Luftwaffe from providing direct support. The Luftwaffe ended up turning their attention to the tens of thousands of men being ferried into the city across the Volga. Volga shipping ended up being a regular target for Luftwaffe fighters and bombers, and a near constant stream of reinforcements across the river would ensure that the meat grinder would never really stop.
In the second phase, after the Soviet encirclement of the 6th Army, things got bad because the city fighting never really stopped, but the Germans were now encircled in the dead of winter and slowly starving. The Luftwaffe lacked the capacity to meet the 6th Arrmy's supply demands even if the VVS wasn't trying to run an air blockade, and the constant presence of Soviet fighters was taking its toll on German transports. Meanwhile, ground forces continued to put pressure on the 6th Army, and the 6th Army fought hard to retain their footholds in the city, as they were really the only defensible parts of their position.
This kind of makes me feel sick. Why would someone sell something like this?
Why is it only worth $60?
I don't understand at all. Even if it was awarded by a corrupt dictator its still a symbol of defending your home. Why would someone sell something like this like its fucking nothing.
So lately I've been pondering the idea to stop reading novels and delve more into the classics however I wonder how one goes about 'studying' the classics. I have both Homeric epics but haven't started them yet from fear of not understanding the works wholly. Is there any required reading before jumping into classical texts? On the same topic, what are some /his/ literary essentials? (or just books that are generally regarded as good)
Plutarch does feally accessible biographies, especially if you like character studies.
>>2950739
Came here to say read Plutarch.
>>2950733
Herodotus is awesome
But to read Herodotus, Plutarch and the like you need a brief background and a good understanding of geography. Especially ancient names for places (Corcyra for Corfu, Aethiopia for Sudan)
I think Arians biography of Alexandros magus is a good start

Aren't the Boddhisattva vows ("I will delay my own Buddha-hood and paranirvana until all sentient beings have themselves reached nirvana") impossible to fulfill?
>>2950504
This is to assume humans and sentient beings will live indefinitely.
Science tells us that's very much an improbable course.
>>2950512
That's not what I was saying.
Who says there is an finite number of sentient beings? Remember, Buddhism does not believe in an atman/soul: as such, the number of sentient beings does not decrease as more individuals reach nirvana.
>>2950523
If Buddha's teachings are correct and its simply human-level understanding that needs to change, then humans would eventually reach that same conclusion.
Other animals might evolve to reach human-level intelligence and reach similar conclusions.
Or the universe would end with heat death where all particles are separated and nothing holds together anymore, leaving no sentience being.
The new Ubisoft game is called "Assassin's Creed Origins" and it is set in ancient Egypt.
The funny thing is that
1. Assassin is word that did not exist until Shakespeare's time
2. The word's Arabic origins did not come into existence any earlier than 600 AD which is way past the time of the game's setting.
And yet despite this you can bet that "Assassin" will be said very often in the game.
Hey. Hey everyone. There's this game, and it's set in a particular time. Now get this. Something is anachronistic and strange. Can you believe that shit?
Following that logic, the character's shouldn't even be speaking english.
Out of all the legitimate gripes, you had to pick the one thing that could he handwaved away by the fact that they obviously aren't speaking English and so the dialogue is obviously meant to be an approximation.

Tengu origninated as a chinese demon. Thee first mention of them is a chinese astrologist identifying a comet as one.
Buddhist generally identified them as trouble makers who caused wars. on the other hand many swordsmen considered them messagers of the Gods and skilled warriors who sometimes imparted their skills to men. Minamoto Yoshitune was said to have been trained by the king of tengu on mount Kuruma.

How is Christianity doctrinally compatible with any other form of government other than absolute monarchy? If the monarch has a divine mandate to rule why should he be accountable to anyone but God?
Why doesn't the pope just choose his own successor?
>>2950044
Can't the christian just counter and say that every actuality is willed by god, therefore if democracy takes over, it was because god made it take over, etc?
Find me the Biblical passages that says Kings have a divine mandate to rule
