Regardless of other factors, one of the greatest problems with the Third Reich was the level of fanaticism it required from the population. Nazis will say this isn't a bug but a feature however this is because they are infected with the same fanaticism. Any political system that sets it leader up as a sort of demigod is bound to become grotesque and this is precisely what happened in Nazi Germany. I think modern people will never be able to truly comprehend how intoxicating a Nazi rally was because we've been desensitized by mass media whereas that level of spectacle was completely novel in 30s/40s. With this in mind, it's not surprising how rationality was drowned out by the sound and fury of Hitler's propaganda machine.

That depends where are you from, Russian will have the very different way of warping compared to American or German. The mainstream view does not usually deviate far from reality (maybe except for the Russians), but don't trust anyone projecting contemponary issues into it.
