Historically speaking, why do a lot of Christians act mean towards me and try to advertise their religion but Jews typically act nice toward me even though I'm native american? Is there a reason this happens? I thought Christianity was supposed to be the religion of love and peace.

American Christians are a special breed of insane. They were the rejects European Christians couldn't handle. Jews came willingly and weren't excomunicated.

Christians are the biggest hypocrites of all time. They will preach about the virtues of meekness and tolerance until they are the ones with power, then everything is fair game.

I always thought the starting point of WWII in September 1939 as very arbitrary.

Why not the invasion of Abyssinia in 1935 or the Second Sino-Japanese War starting in 1937?

I think 1941 would be a much more logical point:
The Pearl Harbor-Attack connected the Asian with the European theater through the declarations of war of the US and Canada against the Axis powers.
Before 1941, there was a Pan-European War that spilled into North Africa and the Middle East and an East Asian War but they didn't really have anything to do with each-other.

Thoughts?

Because 1939 was the year major world powers got involved. Before that it was war between two countries and not a world war?
>>
>>3053947
Lets see
1935 - Colonial war
1937 - Far eastern squabble
1939 - Three major powers at war (UK, France, Germany), two of which have bases across the world.

Of course, the two previous wars mix into it, but 1939 is the start of the world war.

Or 1940, if you want to skip the Phoney war, and get to Germany + Italy v France + UK in Europe and across north africa (with British getting support from the far off colonies too)

>i-it started in 1941!!!

What's your point? Only through ecumenism can the True Faith convert. Standing with your heterodox brothers that they will not be raped and enslaved is infinitely preferable than letting them be lost to the heathen hordes.

> Great Schism weakening Byzantium
> Ottoman Empire exploiting Protestant-Catholic sectarianism in Hungary
> Eastern Roman Empire persecuting Copts, stirring them into betraying the empire why opening the door to Muslim invaders

The greatest threat to Christendom is its own division. Why should theological heterodoxy equate to political suicide in the face of heathens?

Christendom is learning from its mistakes and one day there shall be an ecumenical crusade to re-gather the lost Roman provinces of Egypt, Syria, Anatolia and so forth.
>>
>>3053923
what's the problem?
Those things enumerated are important and traditional elements of Christianity in East and West, which protestant reformists rejected because they didn't fit to their personal philosophy.

What would life had been like in the earliest cities? How do you think they organize themselves? Did they had kings'n queens'n shit?

There doesn't seem to be as much differentiation between any buildings, so maybe it was just an extreme form of tribalism? They were still definitely still hunter-gatherer sort of people for a while, just seeming to get to agriculture around the time of the first Sumerian cities.

Most current dictatorships trace their origin back to quasi-populist revolutionary movements and still in large part derive their legitimacy from that legacy.

Throwing that away and just openly proclaiming himself king would cost dictators a great deal of stability while not really gaining them anything in return. Better to functionally be a king but still call yourself "President" or "Chairman" or "Premier" instead. If you reign for life and have absolute power either way, who cares what people call you?
>>
>>3053506

There is also the fact that since 1945 and especially since 1991 democracy has become the only game in town. Authoritarian systems of all types have the window dressings and structures of democracies from kangaroo courts to rubber stamp parliaments, but none of the practical democratic aspects. The Soviet Union championed "economic democracy" and "democratic centralism", modern Russia claims its democratic, as does North Korea, etc... Very few states openly decry democracy regardless of how un-democratic they are.

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to most history, but I recently started listening to Mike Duncan's The History of Rome podcast and I'm really enjoying it. I find Roman history super fascinating, but I know it's considered to be somewhat entry level on this board.

I'm getting close to the end of the podcast now, and I'm wondering what I should learn about next. Please recommend me what are other civilizations or societies from history that are worth learning about, and if there are any good books written about them that I should check out.

It by no means is entry level, it is just fundamental for understanding (European) history and that's why it is taught early.

Got any preferences? History is so vast that you usually pick something that interests or fascinates you.

What is the roman calendar, and what was the year tracked. Also what year would it be today base on the calendar
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It was based on whomever was ruling at the time, so consuls, which seems inconvenient since they only rule for a year. I don't know if they changed it for Emperors or not. Also, the Calendar was basically Solar, and assumed its Julian form under Caesar. so it's roughly equivalent to ours.

Apparently, at some point, they used the Founding of Rome, 753 a.C., as a measure, which would roughly be 2770 today.
>>
>>3052957
Roman years were measured as AUC, ab urbe condita (after the city having been made), following the foundation of Rome by Romulus, commonly placed at 753 bc. Thus, today it would be 2771 or 2770, sadly I can't remember how the inclusive counting worked and whether you move it ahead one year because of 0 AD.

The year was divided into 12 months, 30 days each, beginning with March. This is how the months september - december are named (i.e. 7th month, 8th month, etc., with February as the 12th month).

Days within the month were counted inclusively as days following the Kalends (1st), Nones (7th / 9th), or Ides (13th / 15th). The Nones and Ides moved back two days on certain months, but I can't remember off the top of my head which ones. So, for March, which had the Nones on the 9th and the Ides on the 15th, when it's the 11th you'd say it's three days after the Nones. If its the 14th, you say that it's one day before the Ides.

Might be fucking up the inclusive counting for the days, but you get the jist of it.

How do you find meaning in life without god? I dont say this as a troll. I've tried to believe in a deity and an afterlife but its not something I am able to do. I do this because I fear death and the unknown that cessation of consciousness would be. The only thing that keeps me going each day is this fear of death, as, due to my location, history, and family situation, I've no friends and due to family drama, I've barely any family at all. And they are not people to talk too, all being highly selfish and not very bright. So while I do love them, I am not able to relate to them.

Every day there is a hollowness and I dont know what to do to fill it. I've tried burying myself in books and video games, but even these pursuits ultimately just leave me feeling wasted.
