Hello /his/!
So me and my friend like to learn about our families history.
And i know everything about my family, but he knows nothing about his, since they moved from Lwow to Vojvodina. (His grand grand father moved).
His last name is Caљeк, but i cannot find anything about Caљeк family online, but i found SALIKs and SALEKs.
Both families are from western Ukraine.
Can someone from Poland and Ukraine find something about his family?

Is a polish surname, Sałek
>>3202900
Are you sure?
SaLek is pronounced with W, and Љ is only soft L

Is your friend Pannonian Rusyn? Rusyns are not Ukranians.
Some guy was going off about the violence in the quran and i countered that the old testament has violence in it, he replied thats a problematic comparison
why is it?
>>3202827
Because it's a valid comparison and undermines his attempt to portray Islam as somehow uniquely violent among the Abrahamic religions.
>>3202837
This.
However, violence in Islam is in most cases a depiction of the epic battles fought by Muhammad. The violence in the Bible is mythological, which makes it even more grotesque et gratuitous.
>>3202837
that is not true, their is different contexts to the texts
the Old Testament violence is mostly descriptive, it explains what happened, but is not commanding an act
the violence in the Quran is commanding, it is commanding muslims to wage these acts
No Christian says "well I just destroyed this town because Joshua did in the book of Joshua"
plus the bible was never viewed as being the literal world of god like the quran is
so sorry, no, its not a valid comparison at all
>tfw this is the actual american flag

It's a dumb libertarian meme
Some great uncle of mine or something was a young Catholic priest in training when the Germans invaded Poland. Anyway he spoke German and Russian so he joined the SS because he feared that he might get arrested or whatever. When he was in the SS he apparently sabotaged tons of German shit and actually fucked with the town records and helped change the last names of like 50 Jewish families so they could avoid deportation. When the Russians came he realized he'd be fucked if they caught him so he actually got his hands of some Russian uniform and fought with them all the way to Berlin. In 1963, somebody recognized him as having been a collaborator with the Germans and he was arrested. He got off though because tons of people (including some of the Jews he helped) came to his defense who knew he was undermining the Germans and he had proof that he fought the Germans when he sneaked into the Red Army.

anyone here have a copypasta of that anon whos grandpa was in the Heer? And it was the end of the war and they were trying to evacuate this town from an incoming soviet attack, and then the SS came in and ordered the soldiers to stop it, round up all the towns folk able to fight, and force them to attack the soviets in a suicide mission, killing all those who wouldnt do it, and so anons grandpa simply took the SS guy to the back of a building to talk to him and his men held him down and they shot him and then threw his ass in a ditch and just continued to evacuate the town?
My great grandfather was in the 2nd SS Division, he was in the Wehrmacht before it was formed though, he was also pagan and he and his men were known to have burned churches on the eastern front. His brothers served in the Waffen SS aswell, thats how i learned about him, as he died in 1944 after he asked for a transfer to the western front to train and lead volksgrenadiers (he was an officer). He died on the first day of the Battle of the Bulge in St. Vith

fuck id like to read that one
Assuming, for the sake of discussion, that the Gospels are accurate depictions of the historical Jesus' life, character and teachings: atheists, what do you think of Jesus?
>>3202770
I don´t give a flying fuck about him.
>inb4 some people start to claim he was a wise man and a teacher
If you don't believe he had a chance of being God, he was batshit fucking insane in the Gospels, telling people to eat his flesh and to give up their property for some non-existent kingdom.
>>3202770
It all seems a bit culty
How do Christian White Nationalists/Supremacist deal with the fact that Christianity is a middle eastern religion and strictly non-racist?
>>3202750
They don't deal with facts, only feels.
>>3202750
They're only in it for shallow reasons
>liberals are anti-Christian
>the impact Christianity had on Europe
>hate Muslims and Jews
>aesthetics
>>3202750
They say the Levantine was European until Arabs came and then point to a few verses regarding tribal identity as racial identity.
They of course ignore the black wife of the Jewish patriarch as well as the number of other people who assimilated into the tribe.
What are the most historical portrayals of medieval combat in media?
>>3202720
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZ04mfAY2BU
It seems Hollywood never gets it quite right..
>>3202720
>>3202720
The problem is that stage combat has a long tradition, audiences are used to it so it doesn't break immersion and it's designed to be safe for the performers. Real medieval combat as outlined in all those manuals is designed to kill, and some of it just looks stupid like half-handing or holding the blade and battering people with the hilt. It might be a legit combat technique but it'd be a pain to teach actors to do it safely and audiences might just find it stupid to look at in the end.
Is this comic /his/torically accurate?
>>3202543
Yes
I find it funny how people claim the Viets kicked America's ass when we took a measly 50,000 dead (rookie numbers) while they took millions of dead and wounded
It's really more like the US and Vietnam went to war and then decided to become bros.
>>3202547
Is this bait?
On which european period is Game of Thrones based upon. Clothing, diplomacy, wartactics, weapons and armor wise?
Late medieval/early renaissance
I believe they rode dragons around the 13th century

War of the roses.
How much social mobility was there in the old colonial empires?
>>3202578
Bump
This will be interesting.
>>3202578
You're going to have to be more specific. Take, for example, the British Raj. Your average Indian could get a job within the civil service, but could never really rise above the rank of middle management. The same goes for the army, you'd have native soldiers and NCOs but all the officer class would be occupiers. This was really the model, but other countries like France or Belgium would give their clients more power, but would confine it to individual tribes who they essentially made into a native aristocracy.
>>3202578
For a long time it wasn't even a question in French colonies, given that the average Gabonese for example wasn't prticularly ambitious. Guys were born shepherd or something and had no reason to want to be something else.
Democracy was a mistake.
& humanities was a mistake
D emocracy
& liberalism was a mistake
Historically speaking, how violent do people collectively tend to be? If it was like 2000 BC, and you were an outsider that was dropped into the middle of some Nordic, Jewish, Pagan Arab, Native American, or Asian tribe, what would happen? Would it be possible to be able to survive and assimilate?
They would grunt like caveman and beat you to death until 1002 where suddenly we all became civilized and stopped eating stones.
>>3202225
It depends on the culture of the tribe. Some cultures are more warlike than others (i.e. Apache vs. Navajo).
Regardless, violence is a necessary instrument in the development of civilization. Without conquest and struggle our ancestors would have had no incentive to strengthen their tribes. Without war, weaker nations which have since dissolved into history would likely still be around - meandering in mediocrity. Humanity has always been violent because force is the great catalyst of change.
Can someone explain this guy's philosophy to me? So he was against all forms of ideology, religion, superstitions, and traditions and labeled them as "spooks," right? So why is he so popular with /leftypol/ and such? Wouldn't he be opposed to Communism and Judaism as well?
There seems to be a lot of cognitive dissonance among spookposters.
I think he's a very minor figure in real field of philosophy, he only get's posted here because of his persona and cartoon.

>“Egoism, as Stirner uses it, is not opposed to love nor to thought; it is no enemy of the sweet life of love, nor of devotion and sacrifice; it is no enemy of intimate warmth, but it is also no enemy of critique, nor of socialism, nor, in short, of any actual interest. It doesn’t exclude any interest. It is directed against only disinterestedness and the uninteresting; not against love, but against sacred love, not against thought, but against sacred thought, not against socialists, but against sacred socialists, etc.” – Stirner’s Critics

Do you think Jesus read Plato or some other greco roman philosophers?
No but the author of the gospel of "John" certainly read Philo, who was a Middle Platonist and a scholar of Plato.
Possibly
He wasn´t an illiterate, lived in a roman occupied country and close to greek colonies and trade routes
>do you think an illiterate Aramaic-speaking peasant from rural Galilee read greco-roman philosophers?
Gee, I wonder.
Historical arms and armour thread, starting with a dump.
