/pol/ here, I know you do not like us. That being said I thought I would share this with you. I don't thing I have ever been legitimately angry at something on here. The destruction of artifacts though touches a nerve, I am truly disgusted. How often does shit like this happen? I know ISIS did similar stuff, but does anyone else?

What was the basis for the ending of the Viking threat to Europe?
I get that the Christianisation of Scandinavia had an impact, and defeats at places like Stamford bridge and gradual losses in Ireland diminished their power.
But what changed in the world that made them so much less of a threat as they had been in the 8th - early 11th centuries?
Their significance in history seems to come to a rather abrupt end after the Norman conquest.

That is completely wrong. While the work of a medieval serf perhaps wasn't as arduous as often imagined, their lifespans were abysmal. Furthermore, the cities were places of safety whereas the villages and countryside had levels of violence worse than present day Detroit. Banditry and highwaymen were rural plague, not urban ones.

I would say there is no modernization of religion. Religion is inherently reactionary and resists change. Which is great because it doesn't have a place in the future.
Better to let religion be awful so people will learn to dislike it, than to let it form into a "modern" version that will eventually go through a revival that will bring back the awful old traditions.
One interesting thing is that the Christianity that Africans are exposed to through European contact is very reactionary Christianity.

Are there any records of cultures or nations that were pre-dominantly peaceful. Ones that didn't need to devote resources in order to survive?
I find it hard to believe - due to the need to defend oneself from neighboring aggressors - not to devote any resources in military.
The only ones I could think of off the top of my head would be like Pacific islands - obviously not the Maori. But this could just be a fallacy cultivated in some romantic view.
