Did Scipio Africanus set up the fault-lines that would tear the Republic apart and lead to the Empire? He was the first Roman general who garnered a really significant political following and defied the Senate.
>>3273665
Scipio didnt had politacal ambtions and sucked at politics anyhow. I would rather say sulla is the first cunt.
>>3273665
The answer is bluntly "no." Scipio was sidelined by Cato the Elder, he never really accomplished anything in terms of politics.
If you're assigning blame for the Fall of the Republic, there are much better people to be pointing fingers at. You could blame Marius for restructuring the Roman army so that troops were directly paid by their commanders (thus making them loyal to their commanders rather than the Senate). You can blame Sulla for having the mother of all chimp-outs. You can blame Caesar for having himself declared dictator for life. You can blame Cato the Younger for refusing to let Pompey marry his daughter, thus driving him to marry Caesar's daughter instead. You can blame the Elites for opposing any sort of moderate land reform to the point where the lower classes through themselves behind Caesar in desperation for change. You can blame Cato the Elder for having Carthage destroyed, thus depriving Rome of its common, uniting enemy. Scipio doesn't deserve a spot on the list at all.
Apparently he was the first person to use the term "Emperor" which is in that context described a general who controls an entire theater.
What the fuck is a 'stem duchy'? I've never seen a clear explanation of it.
>>3273658
It's where all the stemfags live.
I've never heard the term.

It's on Wikipedia.
What is /his/ view about Weimnar Republic?
Is it really as bad /pol/ says?

The answer to that question is always no.

Why would /pol/ thinks its bad? It created the conditions that allowed their God to rise.
What did people in the past think of solar eclipses?
Angels would come and drag our souls to hell.
Time to get a bonfire together and burn some witches.
>Asia
Among Hindus, the most common myth associated with eclipses is that of the sun and the moon being consumed by the demons, Rahu and Ketu. While Rahu is said to devour the sun, Ketu is believed to be the destroyer of the moon. Hindu belief also notes that poison drips down from the sky on the occasion of an eclipse and that it is also a period of ceremonial pollution which necessitates taking a ritual bath.
>North America
Among the Tslascaltec tribes of America, the sun and the moon are regarded as husband-wife and an eclipse a result of a quarrel between them. Among the Kwakiutl tribe on the other hand, eclipses were believed to be the result of being swallowed by a demon. As a ritual to repel the demon therefore, the tribe would burn something that could give out a bad smell.
Among the Choctaws of Southeastern United States, the common belief is that an eclipse occurred because a black squirrel tried to eat up the sun at intervals. Consequently, each time an eclipse would occur they would make a lot of noise and beat pans, the rationale being to scare off the squirrel. A similar myth existed among the Creek Indians who thought an eclipse occurred because a toad or a pig attempted to devour the sun or moon.
>Europe
Among the British, the traditional practice was to beat kettles and pans during eclipses with the intention of driving away the demon that had caused it. In some German provinces on the other hand, an eclipse was believed to be the time when poison fell from heaven and hence vessels carrying water had to be kept covered as a precaution. Among the Bavarians of Germany, drinking of water was prohibited owing to the myth of it being poisoned during an eclipse.
>South America
The primitive tribes of Mexico believed that an eclipse occurred when a jaguar ate up the sun. Among Mexican women, it was believed that children born during an eclipse would turn into mice. The belief persisted in Mexico as late as the 19th century.
Marxist pronouncements of modern "imperialism" and "colonialism" are really hard to swallow, yet at least a *substantial* minority of people who aren't Marxists either tacitly accept it or accept it outright. Why? Am I wrong and are the Marxists right?
'Against Empire' by Micheal Parenti is kind of an overview about modern forms of first world exploitation of the third which ties into 'neo-imperialism/colonialization'. It's clearly a polemic, not a disinterested academic overview (it was written for laymen and not academic journals), but it's still well-researched. The author doesn't get muddled down in abstract theorizing but focuses on the concrete examples of how first world states & multinationals work in tandem to exert power and control over weaker & poorer nations for their own gain.
You could knock the whole book out in a couple days and I think it'll shed some light on what you're asking about. I'm sure it's available online in pdf form if you just google it.

Does it get really conspiratorial, like Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine"? Ever since reading David Harvey's "A Brief History of Neoliberalism" I've been reluctant to read something if the author commits the taboo of reaching too far from a set of premises or being hyperbolic for the sake of book theatre. I'm not trying to be dismissive, just wondering if anything at all strikes you as sketchy before I look into it. Thank you in advance for the recommandation.
>>3273582
It's been a while since i read it, but I don't recall any pronounced paranoid strain of thought in the book.
Tell us about YOUR history, /his/, what interesting stories do you have to tell about your family?
>Tfw my great grandfather was mysterious entity
>A Jew who turned up out of nowhere in America
>Didn't even marry my great grandmother, just busted out kids with her
>Nobody, not even his own kids know who his parents were or where they were from other than that they were Jews
>Anglicized his surname because Jewish, no one knows what it originally was
>In my personal cannon he probably changed his first name too but there's no proof
>Nobody knows where he was born
>Nobody knows if he had brothers or sisters
>Nobody knows if he had cousins or an extended family
>Family agrees that he existed at some point and then didn't.
I tried searching on those internet ancestry sites for more info but it's useless. I'm kind of sad/angry that this man who I lend a lot of my DNA to barely existed. Sometimes I wonder if he was running from something, or was just a self hating Jew. He wasn't running from Nazi's because he was allegedly born sometime around the early 1900s... maybe he owed a lot of money to someone and had to run like mad. I may never know who he really was but my fantasies will always keep him alive and close to me.

Probably a Nazi war criminal who made a deal with the Mossad.

Anon, it's clear that he was probably the illegitimate son of Anastasia of Russia who managed to get away from the Bolsheviks and you are the rightful Tsar.

Should mister Rommel have stayed at Matruh/Tobruk after the recapture and slapped at the british whenever they got close?
>>3273426
Matrah and Tobruk are nowhere near each other. The latter was only temporarily recaptured late in 1942 after two enormously serious offensives, and essentially was the endpoint of Rommel's plan.
But yes, he should have stayed in Cyrenica and slapped at the Brits when they attacked. Given his supply situation, and the feasibility of doing more with it, little else was possible other than to delay as long and as cheaply as possible. It also leaves him in a better position to react to a Torch style landings in western Africa than he was historically.
From a sociological or rather psychological perspective, how much does status and IQ really matter in mate selection? This guy is a Harvard grad and worked at Google yet because of his face and frame I doubt he could get a legit 7 or even 6 for a girlfriend.
What do you think?
>>3273414
Status is everything, IQ is nothing. Note that being a Harvard grad and working at Google does not give you real status, or not the right one to attract women. Status means respect and admiration from a large group of peers.

IQ is a meme and the last thing retards who have not done anything in their life still cling onto to ease things on themselves

Can somebody PLEASE give me a non meme answer rundown on this country? Is their language truly indistinguishable from Bulgarian? Or is there a real difference between Macedonian and Bulgarian? If they are just Bulgarians who fell under the dominion of Serbs/Yugoslavs why doesn't the Bulgarian part merge with Bulgaria and the Albanian part merge with Albania? Why does it even exist?
Is it possible to get a non /int/ meme explanation of this country?
>>3273336
They wuz Alexander n' shiet
It's not indistinguishable from Bulgarian. They're not Bulgarians. They're their own thing which is a mix of Serbian and Bulgarian culture and language though probably closer to Bulgarian than Serbian.
The problem is that they're not entirely sure what they are. The whole national identity thing is kind of new to them, and they're still trying to piece it together from history and culture and that identity crisis is what makes it easy for people to just dismiss them as uppity Bulgarians or something.

What does /his/ think of Alan Watts?
Was he a soft-spoken crackpot full of doublespeak and one-liners, or did his work in introducing Eastern philosophies to Western audiences really help us in the way we think about ourselves, and in the way we view religion, spiritualism and the self?
He was, arguably, ahead of his time in the late 50's and 60's - it seems he would fit today's society just as well with his commentary on how rushed and out of touch and jaded modern man can feel with the world more than that of the post-war era.
The only reason I even know Alan Watts is because I watched some jabroni from New York stream that Everything game that has some of his lectures in it.
One thing I did gather from that stream is that he's one of this love or hate speakers. Half of the Twitch was incredibly triggered by what to me sounded like entry-level Absurdism, and the other half found it to be really confusing but profound at the same time.
Then again, using his lectures in context of a game like Everything does kinda come off as pretentious.
>>3273279
I think you're spot on the money. I think it's hard to engage in a serious conversation about what his merits were, which were probably largely Absurdist or in-line Zen commentary on modern existence. Everything the man says looks like it should be a pinned image someone's tumblr page; a faggy-quote-like-white italics on a sunset background-look-at-me-I'm-so-deep.
He spoke a lot about god, the self and their relation, which I find the most interesting. In his book 'Tao of Philosophy', he speaks about faith through Atheism, not for the sake of denying god's existance, but for the sake of letting go of god to prove faith. He challenges traditional depictions of worship by stating that images of god are things we hang onto due to a lack of faith.
He also went on a lot about giving up on our attachments and hangups, including our reliance on the certainty of things (and god), despite being a Catholic since birth, attending a 'Muscular Christian' school and at one point training as a priest.
Do you think there's really a deeper meaning to what he's saying, or is it a duplicitious oversimplifcation of life?
>>3273415
I certainly believe there is deeper meaning and a lot of value to what he says, but I haven't had the opportunity to study his work in depth yet.
>it was all real
