It's a massive tome, but I highly recommend ''A People's Tragedy: the Russian Revolution'' by Orlando Figes.
Figes really knows his stuff about Rusian 20th and 19th century history, and he really goes into the Russian Revolution and its origins in Tsarist Russia. he also gives a lot of attention to the stories of individuals within the revolution.

This is why religion was so ubiquitous. It provided a second layer of causality that helped explain, at least in part, the randomness of world.

I found this patch in a family cabin originally built by my ancestors. My grandfather was in WW2 and his father was in WW 1 & 2. I'm from the US and this patch doesn't look american at all but I could be wrong.
