Suppose that Europe wasn't completely fucking ravaged and still had factories available for mass production after WW2.

Would the US still have been able to have the success it had during this era? Or was the 1950s meme just made possible because the US had no competitors?

Could the U.S. accomplish something like this today without war?

Nope

The US was only a success because it was paid to rebuild Europe.

He means people that call themselves protestants but are really agnostic. This is common in the US.

Can you really blame them? Christianity's been btfo so hard in the past few centuries you should be glad there are people still calling themselves Christians at all.

Why is Jerusalem considered so Holy by all three Abrahamic religions? I know we Christians consider it Holy Land, but not so sure why. Is it because Jesus walked this land? I know about the jews - they consider it Canaan, the Promised Land. I would like some of you to elaborate these 2 topics. But why muslims consider this holy? This is mystery to me. Thanks in advance.

It's where Muhammed had a wacky adventure.
The angel gayboy took him to Jerusalem then chucked him at heaven to meet all the previous prophets and to learn the signs of god or something.
>>
Mainly because if you are going to make up a nice fairytale called religion, you might want to incorporate already existing religious symbols to give your fairytale more legitimacy, so since Jerusalem was the holy city of Jews, Christians and muslims also wanted to incorporate the city somehow to make their religions look more legit.

Note that christianity during its beginning mainly tried to convert the 8 million jews living in the roman empire, opening up christianity to anyone came only later. So if you want to convert jews you need something that they like.

Muslims wanted to convert both Jews and Christians so they also needed a symbol that Jews and Christians knew and liked.

Etc. pp.

So, at the very least, there was a fringe plan devised by influential Jewish academics and businessmen to literally destroy the German people?

That book was merely pragmatic and the world would be a better place if it had been turned into policy. I challenge you to argue otherwise.
>>
>>3308455
These things were written after German attacks on Jews had already become public knowledge. It's more likely that a couple of Jews just got angry enough to come up with such theories than that there was some sort of conspiracy.

Where do you agree and disagree with what he said?

Any favorite ideas of his that have influenced you?

To be fair, the people who HAVE read Foucault lack the intelligence or the opposable thumbs needed to make a thread.
>>
>>3308405
No that's fair. I can only post from my phone atm so I didn't want to type too much but you're right, it's obnoxious to start threads like this without any participation in the OP.

I am actually a fan of Foucault. I really enjoy his breakdown of the many systems around us that help constitute who we are whether we're aware of it or not. Even if I don't agree with all he says I think he spurs further independent thought into analyzing the world around you. Personally he has really helped me work on introspection and figuring out the kind of person I want to be and the world I'd like to live in.

That being said, I think one of my biggest problems isn't with him persay but the way he is interpreted by far left groups. Yes I know Foucault was an anarcho-communist but I feel what he wrote, at least later in life was much more moderate.

I feel like people read and understand his critique on the different forms of power around us but use that as an excuse to attack any social construction just because it isn't "real". I don't think this is fair and I feel much more like he advocates something closer to a social democracy where the policies of government act for the good of the people and are scrutinized to remove abuses that may result intentionally or otherwise to marginalized groups or the population as a whole. I think he strongly urged self-control and responsibility on the individual level but that is often used as an excuse to find anything with any semblance of power over you and discredit it by people who only read History of Sexuality and Discipline and Punish and then stop.

I've finished my first semester and took Philosophy as a minor (or whatever you call it in the US). Now I'm supposed to write 10 pages about a subject of my choice and use at least two scientific papers or books as references.

I'd love to argue that morals are based on our human insticts and act as axioms and therefore can not be concluded from itself or anything else. It would be cool to "defend" the naturalistic fallacy a bit because it's the most bashed fallacy and I like underdogs. The problem is I don't know what books or articles I should use.

I hope some of you can give me some names or books I shouild check out. Also if you got any other interesting questions I should include I would love to hear them.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, but are you stating that human morals generally stem from the idea that they believe if it will be self-beneficial to them or not?

Another World War 2 thread but can't seem to find answers elsewhere. I have always been fascinated with the events in World War Two but I'm more interested in the "what could've been", Germany went to war against the Soviet Union but what was their end game? I've heard of "Generalplan Ost" and "Lebenstraum" which was the colonization and annexation of central and Eastern Europe including western Russian territories, but what was to be the fate of the Soviet Union had the Germans won. Clearly the German high command had a plan because you don't go into war without one. The Germans could never occupy the entire country so would they just install a puppet government or is there something else? Answers on the internet just say shit like "probably they be taking some territory idk"

Pic related was the only good example of what Lebenstraum could've looked like but no idea what the other shit is, the artist might just be an alternate history larp

It's not really this easy... It would take a fucking while to explain because it would mean that i'd have to go back to fucking Charlemagne. The making of the holy roman empire is a long and complex thing. I will be short but then i might be inacurrate.

Charlemagne dies in 814 and his empire has been, after a war between his children and the treaty of Verdun (understand why the germans wanted to take Verdun in 1916? Verdun was a strategic but also symbolic place), divided between three of his children. Lotharingia (whose ruler Lothar hold the symbolic title of emperor) and eastern francia ended up tied together through sucessions, while the western francia became the kingdom of France.

Then, let's just say that, in theory (even if 90% of the time it was just a formality) frankish rulers were elected by the plaid (the assembly of the greats). the electing system of the holy roman empire is a reminiscence of this system : the emperor is elected among the great of the empire. He's just the feudal ruler of a bunch of semi independant lands, held by kings, counts, bishops... With the end of the middle ages, while other kingdoms began to be centralized (France under Charles VII, England after the war of the roses), the empire was still, because of his electing system and other things :the emperor is powerful, of course, but he's just a powerful lord among a lot of other lords. Another explaination might be the religious differences, the Brandeburg duke / king in prussia being a protestant. There was also the ottoman threat to the east.

One man almost managed to rule for real over the empire : Charles V Von Habsburg aka Charles V Of Spain. At the time, to become emperor, you litteraly had to bribe the electors of the empire, being the biggest princes. Charles was already a pretender, being the grandson of the emperor Maximilian, but with the spanish riches he managed to make himself king. Imagine : Ruling over spain + the spanish colonies, austria, the netherlands, lots of italian lands and being the emperor! But with the kebab menace + the rivalry against the french, Charles V never managed to create an empire that would rule over all of the christians.

I hope i answered to your question.

How did the early administration in Roman Gaul work? Did Caesar leave behind some governors to collect taxes, or did he just get the local leaders to pledge allegiance?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>3308154
He left local tribe leaders. He took members of their family as hostage in case they betray him which they did a lot. Also left some legions in winter.
>>
>>3308175
This, though these parts technically weren't part of Rome yet, those Caesar was actively working to annex the region. Transalpine Gaul and Cisalpin Gaul were part of Roman provinces and had a typical provincial administration with appointed governors. After the whole region was reorganized into several provinces and the typical roman adminstration was enforced. Gaul during this period up until the fall of the empire always retained quirks of its past though, fashion and language became romanized but retained Gallic traits and the region did not change much ethnically.
>>
>>3308234
so the "Caesar killed one hundred trillion gauls" is a meme?
