Could Charles V have succeeded in keeping his realm together?

Pros:
>new world gold and silver
>spice islands colonies
>dutch banking boom
>spanish military might
>muslim decline in Africa

Cons:
>nationalism and rise of nation states
>Martin Luther and eternal german autism
>church power over politics
>habsburg inbreeding

Was the Holy Roman Empire doomed from its birth, or did he personally fuck it up bu bankrupting the state which owned the majority of the world's money somehow?

Well the Habsburgers kept the HRE until 1806.

Spain... you know how it went.

Spain and Netherlands were where the fortune was at, since they included the Americas and South East Asia. He lost these. He also lost Hungary to the Ottomans, allowed the christian holy wars, lost the pope (by burning Rome), and so on.

The question is could he have done better in these circumstances, or was it all fucked by the time he was in place.

He is a self proclaimed failure, he said so himself when he abdicated.

Halò, my name is Amin
I’m a 27 year old Ugandan Prionnsa na h-Alba (Prince of Scotland for you southerners). I carve Pictish stones out of stone tablets, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior Highland games. (Caber toss, sheaf toss, stone toss)

I train with my Claymore every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through steel because it is big, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my sword license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Gaelic fluently, both Scots and the Hebridean dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Scottish history and their warrior code, which I follow 100%

When I get my British visa, I am moving to London to marry the queen and unite the commonwealth. I hope I can become an ambassador for the UN or a member of the order of the garter!

I own several kilts, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Britain, so I can fit in easier. I drink heavily and speak Gaelic as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in Britain!

what do you guys think of the treaty? do you think that the anti treaty forces were right or wrong?
>>
Set up to take the fall for the Anglo-Irish treaty. There was NO way Ulster was going to join the rest of Ireland, short of ethnic cleansing. Collins took the best deal on the table despite not being a politician.

As an economist, I favor a lot of Collins' views on how the Free State should develop. It helps that he knew accounting and understood that Ireland desperately needed to grow economically after centuries of mismanagement.

I don't deify him, but I do feel he's been unfairly slagged by anti-Treaty circles.
>>
>>2485458
The greatest enemy of the Irish people weren't Viking raiders, Cambro-Norman warlords, or London-based governments. It has always been the Irish people.

The Treaty was a bitter pill to swallow, but 7/10 of the island is better than nothing. And it might take a couple of generations, but the northern counties would eventually reunite with the south. The problem was that DeValera's society was run by priests, thus alienating Protestants who favored the nationalist cause as well as Ulstermen who felt vindicated in their fears of a Catholic tyranny.

The Irish Civil War was a fucking mistake. What's even more galling is how the Free State and later Republic mistreated Irish men that served in WWI. Many of them joined the army for money, adventure, or get away from home. They didn't care about supporting British interests and helped defend Catholic France and Belgium from being subjugated. My ex-gf's great-grandfather's grave was vandalized by asshole teens who hated the fact that his headstone said he died serving aboard the Royal Navy in 1915.

Teach me about postmodernism and reactions to it, as well as modern competing movements. I'm especially interested in postpostmodernism and metamodernism. Are these movements legitimate in your opinion? Why or why not? Is metamodernism related to hyperreality?

Hello Buddhabros, how's your practice going?
>>
Following thread because 1. I would like to see more generals on /his/ and 2. I'm studying chinese history and it would be good to know more about buddhism. I also plan on studying India at some point. Never really occurred to me how important India was in the eastern world until I started studying it, I always thought of China as the Greece or Rome (that is, the starting point and mother of eastern civilization).

Anyway, I gotta ask. How do Buddhists feel about the sects? Have there been many notable wars between Buddhist sects like christianity? For example, you have the original buddhism from India, Chinese Buddhism, which eventually becomes Zen Buddhism in Japan.
>>
>>2485120
Buddhists didn't have the sectarian warfare of Christians as far as I know, but they do have some longstanding and deep conflicts with other religions like Islam, especially in Southeast Asia.

>The first escapes of Carolina's black slaves occurred around 1687. The first group to reach Florida was known to be composed of eight men, two women, and one child. In a short time, the number of evaders rises already to the hundred. The Spanish Crown is determined to welcome the fugitives. And once under Spanish law, the slaves are released. Charles the II granted in 1693 a document that says: "Giving freedom to all, both men and women, be an example of my liberality and lead others to do the same.
