Well he fought against his father in at least two rebellions. Had one bastard child(most kings have many more). Other than having a bad temper and being a mamma's boy he was thought of as being a chivalrous knight.

Fun Fact: He was concise in his speech and was known by the nickname 'Yes and No'.

Richard as he appears in Georges Duby's William Marshal: The Flower of Chivalry
Richard currently the count of Poitiers pursued his retreating father north. And like always Richy got too excited and forgot his armor. Guarding the rear of Henry's force was William Marshal. When they spotted each other they road out an spoke.
>RP, "By God's legs, Marshal, kill me not, that would be wrong for I am all unarmed."
>WM, "No. Let the Devil kill you for I shall not."
> William spared him, but struck the horse with his lance and killed the animal. The count(R) fell.

Then at Henry II's funeral.
>The barons tell William to flee for Richard had the same Plantagenet temper as his father.
>WM, "It is true that I have killed the horse, nor do I repent of it. --- God nonetheless showed me His great goodness when I was a knight; and to Him I trust myself and my hopes."
>Richard arrived and of those who sided with his father he called upon William Marshal.

>RP, "Marshal, the other day, you sought to kill me, and dead I should surely be if I had not turned your lance aside with my arm. That would have been an evil day for you."
>WM, "Sire, I had no intention of killing you, nor did I ever try to do so. I am still strong enought to direct my lance. If I had wished, I should have struck your body, as I did your horse. If I killed the horse, I did not do so by mistake, nor do I repent doing so."
>RP, "Marshal, I pardon you. Never shall I bear you rancor for it."

>Richard then went on to keep his father's promise to the Marshal wedding him to the second richest heiress in England.

Were the US-backed coups during the Cold War justified? I know at least some of them were; hoping to get some insight on Iran, Nicaragua, etc. Thanks.

Mossadegh and Allende deserved it.

The coups resulted in hell for their countries, but the leaders who got unseated were basically begging for it.

Now Guatemala and Nicaragua, that was just some evil shit.

Their languages at least were very similar with Old English for example sounding more like Icelandic then modern day English. As to state structure I'm not sure but they probably both had similar feudal systems.

Just because I don't think psychoanalysts deserve more than 1 thread at a time...has anyone read Lacan and gotten anything of worth from him?

I picked up Ecrits from the library. Thumbed through and the guy is hard to understand and seems to be somewhat disappointing when any idea is unearthed. I figure I'm either looking at his stuff the wrong way or hes just negligible.

What should I read to in2 Lacan? Is he worth the time?

Why does everyone meme and talk about the HRE and other meme entities, but nobody talks about the Bulgarian Empire, the Bulgarians were the only ones who could use the title Caesar, given to them by the Byzantines. They had a large and powerful Empire and defeated the Byzantines on several occasions. They were the first who got a "national" church, ruled by themselves, neither by Rome nor Constatinopole. They would be a constant thorn in the Byzantines side. Can we discuss this underrated Empire?

>>
>>2608925
Because while cool it was terribly inconsistent in its conquests. And while apparently they had advanced culture, they left very little behind. So yeah until solid evidence to the contrary is found, the Bulgarian empires were cool but ultimately inconsequential to European history unlike HRE
>>

>So yeah until solid evidence to the contrary is found, the Bulgarian empires were cool but ultimately inconsequential to European history unlike HRE

You mean Western European? The Bulgarians were very influential in the Balkans tho, they created the first Slavic alphabet, and united and consolidated the Slavs. But i see what you mean, but, on the other hand what have the HRE ever done for us?
>>
>>2608998
Really? Because as far as I know they had absolutely nothing to do with the first Slavic alphabet if you are referring to the Glagolitic, it was made by a couple of Byzantines and intended for the Slavs in Moravia. Which even in the map you posted is not in the borders of the empire. They did however create the Cyrillic later.

Can any argument possibly be made for genuine populism?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2608870
Old Roman style populism was fine.

Currently populism means to a political approach where you preach to masses with flavour of the month political discourse and use the support it gives you for other means.
>>
>>2608870
It would have to be one heck of an argument to counterbalance the historical tendency of populism to turn into totalitarian bloodshed.
>>
>>2608870
in democracy politicians are meant to serve the people, populism is by nature intertwined with this

One thing that i always found curious is how did the Europeans controlled such large amounts of land.
How could they countrol so much territory, did they had milions of soldiers guarding their colonies? Or did they just had administrators in every town or village?

It differed continent to continent. In places like the British Raj, Diplomatic manuevers were used to ensure loyalty, along with a handful of soldiers. There were only 50,000 troops in the raj at one point. They could afford this because they cooperated with locals to backstab other locals and share power.

in places like Canada, Brazil etc, the natives were forcibly kicked out or forced to integrate, and people immigrated there. These were much easier to maintain as it's rare for immigrants to want total separation from the homeland.

The Industrial revolution helped. It's estimated that in the mid-19th century, England - that small island - was producing something like a third to a half of the entire world's iron and textiles.

They either coopted local instutions and elites and ruled through them or slowly displaced seminomadic tribes in a sparsely populated area.
