What is the best method to learn Ancient Greek?

At this moment I'm willing to invest a maximum of $50 on resources, if that helps, but any info is welcomed.

But why?
>>
>>2635978

Torrent Rosetta Stone, it has a very good Greek series.
>>

Duolingo has modern Greek, which would at least help. You'd learn the alphabet and a lot of the vocab/grammar.

See if any churches in your area offer classes on it. You'd be surprised how many churches offer summer Greek classes.

>The Franks (Latin: Franci or gens Francorum) are historically first known as a group of Germanic tribes that inhabited the land between the Lower and Middle Rhine in the 3rd century AD, and second as the people of Gaul who merged with the Gallo-Roman populations during succeeding centuries, passing on their name to modern-day France and becoming part of the heritage of the modern French people. Some Franks raided Roman territory, while other Frankish tribes joined the Roman troops of Gaul. In later times, Franks became the military rulers of the northern part of Roman Gaul.

>Frankish (reconstructed Frankish: *Frenkisk), Old Franconian, or Old Frankish was the West Germanic language spoken by the Franks between the 4th and 8th century

Let's say Hitler's speech runs a little longer than expected and he's there when the bomb explodes.

How does this change the course of the war if Hitler is killed or survives the bombing?

Someone less batshit crazy takes over Germany, a negotiated peace is reached with the Western Allies, the Holocaust is quickly ended, the USSR is BTFO, and everyone lives happily ever after.

Which version of Greece was overall more important to Western civilisation in the long run, Macedonian/Hellenistic or Classical/Athenian?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I'd say classical/athenian. The modern west really gets its Hellenic roots via the Romans, who probably would've been influenced by classical Greece whether Philip and Alexander had gone on their conquests or not.
>>
>>2635568
Hellinistic only really mattered to oriental civilization
>>
>>2635568
Classical gave us all the important shit, like democracy and the very concept of Western civ. Hellenistic's importance was only sustained through Rome. It ceased to be relevant once the WRE fell.

Because they were irrelevant retards who left behind no monuments and were slaughetered out ofthe genepool, they were cucks: the civilization

First of all I apologize if this is something obvious but I don't have much knowledge about medieval history.

So I was thinking about this yesterday and realized that throughout medieval history and a bit further, up to the rise of nationalism perhaps, you would have various regions and each would be ruled by a noble.

Counts, Barons, Dukes, Kings, the Emperor, etc.

It made sense to me if you could place them all in a neat pyramid with the King (or the Emperor) on top and everyone bellow.

I even - somewhat - understand the whole Primus Inter Pares deal between the Emperor of the HRE and the various Kings.

My problem is with sovereign Duchies.

Hell, if you are an Independent and Sovereign Estate (and I understand that the concept of sovereignty can't be exactly applied to the medieval era) whats stopping you from considering yourself a King?

Get Luxembourg for instance. Its a Sovereign nation up to this day but why haven't its ruler one day got up and decided to be considered a King? I know that doing that today wouldn't make much sense, but thought its history wouldn't it be something better?

At the same time you have powerful Duchies that remained dependent on a King (Duchy of Aquitaine for instance).

This question always comes back to me when thinking about the problems the HRE had with Italian city-states. If Milan was so serious about not being submitted to the HRE why didn't it just declare itself a Kingdom - why remain a Duchy??? Whats stopping it?

***

TL;DR: Whats the difference between a King and a Sovereign Duke?

I imagine that if a duke decided to call himself a king, he would be laughed at by his peers. And maybe bitchslapped by a nearby actual monarch.

The dukes of burgundy wanted to become kings, but they felt the need to ask permission to the pope and the emperor.

There was also a rule in the HRE that there could only be one king, that of bohemia. That's why the hapsburg only became archdukes and there were kings in prussia but no king of prussia.
>>
>>2635344
Sometimes the medieval people had trouble to designate their ruling titles. For exemple, in France, the counts of Champagne or Flanders were extremly powerful nobles, yet they were not called "dukes", even if they could easily claim this title. It is mostly because most of the landed titles of Europe come not from self-proclaiming, but by either election (In the case of the first Kings of France) or by being granted by a higher authority.

As >>2635489 said, Charles the Bold of Bourgogne wanted to proclaim himself King, his duchy of Bourgogne was so powerful that it was a realm of its own ; But he looked not for the title of "King of Burgundy", but for the traditional, ancestral title of "King of Lotharangia".

Was it much easier or harder to get a gf during the middle ages? Specifically during the time of the crusades.

define gf, just rape and pillage and when you get home from the holy mission girls will be over the dick.

I meant finding a strong independent and loyal wife who'd patiently await for 5 - 10 years for your arrival from the holy land, while simultaneously denying any sexual advances from other men during that time.
>>
>>2635337
Enormously harder. Maternal mortality ensured that the population of adult women was far less than the population of adult men, and of course, they'd be serially married to the wealthiest or most successful. Unless you're at that top, you're in trouble. I mean, some men obviously did reproduce, since we have people who aren't descended from nobility, but you're looking at a world in which roughly half of the adult male population will never have a permanent partner.

How come China never built a great empire by expanding outside its traditional borders?

Did it simply not require any foreign resources or labour?

Has China been the closest to a historical autarky as possible?

He killed more Romans than any other man in history.

Also, he completely Subjugated Gaul and Hispania such that their native populations never rose to power again.
>>
>>2635242

His campaign against the Gauls was pretty based considering that he was perpetually outnumbered by an enormous number and had enough grasp of politics to exploit the smaller Gaulish tribes into fighting for him and weakening themselves while destroying their larger enemies. His absolute fuckery of the Roman political system was also pretty brilliant. His only real flaw was believing his own propaganda to the point that he thought his political enemies wouldn't murder him given the chance.

It was Sulla who wrote the book for eternal Dictatorship.

If Sulla had Caesar's ambition, or Caesar, Sulla's ruthlessness, then the Empire would have been founded much earlier.

Why did Napoleon allow so many unflattering paintings of himself? Even if he was an ugly fucker, there were plenty of historical figures who were painted much better looking than they really were

the depictions of him as a young general were a lot of times made by artists who had no idea what he looked like and just wanted to sell.
Also he tought posing was for sissies, arguing ceasar os alexandre did not pose for portraits.
Also, this specific one was painted a few decades after his death and shows him defeated, on purpose. he had a lot of haters also.
