The lightest skinned Ancient Egyptians were basically like modern day Levantines and Berbers, and the blackest ones were probably similar to modern day Upper Egyptians and Nubians. Egyptian sources even imply that aristocratic women who rarely went out into the sun were fair skinned, but the average man was "reddish" in skin color. I also think Herodotus basically called Egyptians most similar to lighter skinned Northern Indians, and Nubians and Ethiopians similar to dark skinned southern Indians. Which kinda correlates with modern day Egypt.

It never was. The fetishism Americans have for helicopter parenting is borne from it. But it expresses itself in different ways: two centuries ago, if you wanted to educate a populace quickly you had to build a giant library and pay to have books copied. More recently the government chose to standardize all K12 education (even down to weekly exams) as a means of most efficiently generating intellectual improvement.

Which is to say, times change and the requirements for educational facilities do as well. It makes sense to have a big grand brick library, because it can't burn down. At my old school they dumped all the books and replaced it with a computer lab, which is now used at capacity because so many parents force their kids into accelerated hybrid classes. Did some people cry when all the books were dumped? Sure they did, but those people were all the old union teachers who will be retired in ten years.
