Only a certain part of the Russian border was attacked in the Second World War. The Russians simply concentrated troops on their border. Not to mention, techonological advancements like motorized vehicles made the task of defending wide borders much easier.

Here's how it goes:
The two principalities that made up Romania were united under Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the Union finally being recognized by external powers in 1859. Now, the two principalities, which are the rough equivalent of present-day Romanian Muntenia and Moldova respectively, received some more territory in the wars that followed their union (namely, the Cadrilater territory from Bulgaria). Transylvania, which was predominantly inhabited by ROMANIANS (and an independent principality in its own right for a lot of time in history) was added to Romania as a result of the Union referendum in Alba-Iulia, and the treaty of Trianon in 1920 which was signed with Hungary. We also received the territory of Basarabia (the other half of Moldova, over the Prut River), and the period between the two world wars was the time of Greater Romania.

After Hitler messed up our borders in the second World War we only ended up regaining Transylvania, and half of Moldova declared its independence after being taken & held by the Russians for a while. All of this resulted in Romania's modern-day borders, and a fucked up distribution of various ethnic groups like Hungarians in central Romania and Russians in the Republic of Moldova.
