Crashing the Republic...

so why did the allies claim to want to 'liberate europe' whilst letting half of it fall to communism?

Google Operation Unthinkable. The Soviet conquest was a fait accompli and the West didn't have the will to overthrow them.

the CCCP was actually a formidable enemy, unlike Hitler and his motley crew

Why did the Western World become obsessed with "fairness" on a macro and collective level? It seems self-defeating. Who cares if something is """fair""" (something which presumes contextual egalitarianism in most cases) if they and what they support are weakened as a a result?

I must tell you I'm indifferent.

I did once stumble upon some kind of Acadian memorial museum on my way through the maritimes.

Frankly I'd never heard of them until that point.

How does one study philosophy?

I bought Plato's dialogues and the Republic because I thought i'd be a good idea to start at the beginning.

I read The Apology twice and still don't have a complete grasp of what is being said.

Wut do?

I would start with the Presocratics, and go from there. Much of Plato's as well as Aristotle's work is based off of these early philosophers..

What's the deal with Romanticism v. Enlightenment? Are we more aligned with one side or the other in modern society?

Modernism killed both
>>
>>2712072

How and why?
>>
>>2712060
The modern school of liberal arts has destroyed both. We instead do not rely any longer in emotional beauty or rational beauty but instead on points of view provided from something called critical theory. Which dictates that you can prove or disprove anything and that no one should attempt to be impartial in their judgement.

Why were the Soviets so opposed to religion?

I'll concede that I don't know much about Soviet political impetus nor ideology, but I do know that they suppressed religious freedom and pretty much cleared the country of religious items (at least as much as they could). What was the rationale behind this? What kind of ideology conflict happened between the church and the state?

If I had just taken over a country, I would get in bed with the church and Russian identity. Russia until the Soviets was a /Holy Rus(sia)/ and that was definitely a big part of their claim to being the Third Rome. The church and state were definitely close to each other in pre-Soviet Russia.

“Thus, the history of nations teaches us the necessity of the Union with Christ.”
—Karl Marx, age 17

“The leaden world holds us fast And we are chained, shattered, empty, frightened, Eternally chained to this marble block of Being, … and we—We are the apes of a cold God.”
—Karl Marx, age 19

"The hellish vapors rise and fill the brain,
Till I go mad and my heart is utterly changed.
See this sword? The prince of darkness sold it to me. -
For me beats the time and gives the signs.
Ever more boldly I play the dance of death." [p.12]

The major and maybe only significant difference between Fascism and Socialism is that Socialism requires a population devoid of identity be it national or religious or sexual even.

So by promoting mass equality the Soviets could make their people as homogenous as possible due to the need for the state to choose people randomly instead of having them earn it by merit and so they have to be perfectly blank and willing.

Soviet Russia was taught not to 'care' about anything other than the party, to not follow anyone who wasnt the party, to not think of anything the party didnt tell them. Socialism works best when the society is absolutely terrified and pessimistic of the future. Capitalism for would instead rely on certainty and happiness.

Matthew 6:23 But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!

Jude 1:6 And I remind you of the angels who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave them but left the place where they belonged. God has kept them securely chained in prisons of darkness, waiting for the great day of judgment.

In retrospect he seems to be, but he didn't exactly have the benefit of hindsight when he was making his decisions.

For instance, he likely did not believe that the US would involve themselves in the European theater owing to their adoption of isolationist policies following WWI. He also could not know beforehand that his forces would be unable to quickly secure victory in Russia, or that Italy would prove to be such a useless ally in terms of their military power.

How come Australians celebrate the landings at Gallipoli as a national holiday? Weren't they a total disaster? They got their shit pushed in my some weak Turks, is that cause for celebration? The French don't celebrate the fall of Paris, Americans don't celebrate Vietnam, so why celebrate their embarrassing defeat at Gallipoli?

>>
It's one of the biggest engagements by ANZAC forces and it's less a celebration of the war and more of just a day for aussies to be allowed to be proud of being aussie. Most countries aren't like burger land where people fly the flag every day and clap for troops on civilian airplanes. ANZAC holidays are a sort of exception to that.
>>
>>2711752

It's a commemoration not a celebration you tard.
>>
>>2711752
Before Gallipoli, and to a larger extent WW1, we were essentially british people that spoke a bit differently. Gallipoli is significant because it marks the occasion when Australian was a national identity.

What are the best texts that explore the life of the Irish under the rule of England?

Capturing the full extent of existence as a subjugate people from the 1500s on.

There wasn't really any actual subjugation until the late 17th century, until then English rule over Ireland was basically nominal, with English influence being contained to a small area around Dublin

Was British imperialism in India justified to any degree? And was it as valuable to the British in hindsight?

Maybe if India fought harder they could of defeated the British but ya know,
It was justified as much as any other war/occupation in history

What does that even mean? The British conquered India and ruled it more or less competently, does that justify it? It's a nonsense question, history is just a bunch of stiff that happened, "justice" is irrelevant.
