Why were the early medieval rulers so desperate to be associated with classical Rome and the Church? It seems like Theodoric in particular was masturbating to busts of Caesar but almost all of them were trying to out-Roman the next guy.

Obviously there is the need for continuity of administration but especially in places like Gaul you'd think the locals wouldn't be too keen on "romanitas" anyway

>but especially in places like Gaul you'd think the locals wouldn't be too keen on "romanitas" anyway
Yeah, it was just their way of life for like four centuries, pretty irrelevant it seems.
>>
Because Rome was the greatest empire in history. Why wouldn't you want to emulate them if you're a ruler? The Romans during Republic times emulated Alexander for the exact same reason.

The Romans didn't genocide the Carthaginians, they just trashed the shit out of their capital. They also did that to Jerusalem, albeit not quite as hard as they had Carthage.

How many people have existed throughout human history do you think?

Is there any feasible way that historians/ anthropologiests can calculate the total number of humans that have lived? I find this subject fascinating and can't find any solid sources on it.

Is it in the trillions?

I'd imagine less considering the human population graph only recently went from linear to exponential.

Was the pacific theater the worst theater to be an infantry soldier?

Europe
>Invade France in the Summer
>Stay on the ground (for the most part) throughout much of the advance.
>Only have to deal with winter for a few months
>Whole engagement lasts a little under a year for US soldiers
>pic related: form tight bonds with your bros, respect your higher command to keep you safe

Pacific theater
>Hoping from island to island having to live on a ship for half the time
>Fighting in humid dense jungle a majority of the time, fighting off venomous creatures and more petulant diseases than europe.
>Lasts several years
>pic related: Pretty much every man for himself, everyone's a dick to their COs.

For Americans, yes. For other players, not necessarily (Germany/USSR). I will say that the average IJN/IJA soldier had it far worse than any other countries military.

>I will say that the average IJN/IJA soldier had it far worse than any other countries military.

Not worse than the Chinese. Their soldiers were almost as likely to die of starvation or disease JUST GETTING TO THE CONSCRIPTION OFFICE as they were to enemy action.

>>2721996
The casualty rate of soldiers serving in the Pacific was x3.6 higher than it was in the ETO, and in what battles they did engage in the Japanese tended to achieve a far better casualty ratio than the Germans against the Americans. Mostly because they did not surrender when 'beaten', while the Germans did. By the million.

You know, one thing that always struck me about the ACW is how often attacks tactically failed. Even in the worst days of trench warfare in WW1, you usually took the line of trench you were going after, (whether or not you could hold it on the counterattack was a different story entirely) but the ACW seems to be the only war I'm familiar with where the dominant mode of fighting is
>Maneuver
>One side plops down somewhere and fortifies
>Other side attacks and almost inevitably loses
>Sits around wondering why it didn't work even though it didn't the last 20 times.
>Someone tries to maneuver around the unassailable defensive position and the cycle repeats all over again.

One of my favorite topics to discuss, for it seems so fascinating on what these towns have taught us about Rome.

Let's discuss these cities, before, during, and after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.

One thing that isn't clear to me is if this town was at least partially rebuilt and repopulated afterwards.
I asked this because I read some strange and interesting theories about Pompeii not being ancient actually being an Italian town that went through the Middle Ages and Renaissance and was destroyed in the 17th century.
The town itself appeared on maps of those centuries and was even mentioned on epitaphs of that era.
Materials like window glass seemed like they were from the 17th century, also.

Every fantasy setting is Eurocentric, for the most part. Sure, you'll get the occasional far east setting, and maybe a north Africa and Arabia setting

But what about a setting based off America? Using American archetypes, and American culture? What would that be like?
