Any good history books that got an audiobook? Been listening to some good stuff on my commute but I haven't found much in a few areas.
Particularly interested in:
France from the start of the 100 Years War to the start of the French Revolution.
Spain from Reconquista to Age of Discovery.
HRE anything after Fredrick II.

If all of his sons had lived, would Charlemagne have passed on his title as Emperor of the Romans, or was it just a symbolic thing?

Symbolic/forced/one time deal.

Though the title of Rome was not passed the significance of the Pope crowning the Emperor of the HRE symbolically carried up into the late 16th century.

Daily Reminder that in the end Rome fell; not to Muslims, but to other jealous Romans.

>Constantinople had been in existence for 874 years at the time of the Fourth Crusade and was the largest and most sophisticated city in Christendom. Almost alone among major medieval urban centers, it had retained the civic structures, public baths, forums, monuments, and aqueducts of classical Rome in working form. At its height, the city held an estimated population of about half a million people behind thirteen miles of triple walls. Its planned location made Constantinople not only the capital of the surviving eastern part of the Roman Empire but also a commercial center that dominated trade routes from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. China, India and Persia. As a result, it was both a rival and a tempting target for the aggressive new states of the west, notably the Republic of Venice.
>Byzantine resistance based in unconquered sections of the empire such as Nicaea, Trebizond, and Epirus ultimately recovered Constantinople in 1261. The Fourth Crusade is considered to be one of the more prominent oppressive acts in the Great Schism between the Eastern Orthodox Church and Roman Catholic Church, and a key turning point in the decline of the Byzantine Empire and Christianity in the Near East.

Rome never fell, anon

Saying Rome fell in 1204 is like saying the western Empire fell in 235.

I imagine you don't actually have much interest in the period and you're just trying to demonstrate that you have marginally more knowledge about it than laypeople.

The first great power on great power fighting since WW1, and sorta the unofficial first fighting of WW2, took place between the Soviets and Japanese on the border of Manchuria and Mongolia.

The last fighting of WW2, after six years of theaters all across the world, also took place between the Soviets and Japanese in the same region.

The first major battle of the American Civil War (First Battle of Bull Run) began on Wilmer McLean's farm in Manassas, Virginia, on July 21, 1861. During the war, McLean moved south to the quiet community of Appomattox Court House, Virginia. On April 8, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee finally decided to surrender his forces, having been outmaneuvered and surrounded, and he sent out a messenger to find a place at which to meet General Ulysses S. Grant. The house the messenger found was Wilmer McLean's. Afterwards, McLean reportedly said, "The war began in my front yard and ended in my front parlor."

The first and last rulers of Rome were both named Romulus.

The Medieval Era in Europe began with the fall of Rome (476) and ended with the fall of Rome (1453).

The Roman Republic began and ended by the rebellion of a noble named Brutus.

What if Trotsky would have survived his assassination attempt and stared a trotskyite communist revolution in Mexico? Could mexico have been a 3rd superpower competing with both Liberal America and Marxist-Leninist Russia? How far do you think international communism would have gone?

I'm including manifest destiny of the United States here as colonialism.

Is it something like how the French handled things in Canada? I know that some of the founding fathers wanted to get natives to live in towns and farms, and then bring them into the United States as citizens.

A more even mixture of native and white cultures. Maybe european settlers adopt native clothing, certain customs and ways of life. A more syncretic form of Christianity that incorporates various regional beliefs of the natives. This would actually be quite interesting. Maybe if the colonial authorities didn't try and stop people from leaving the colonies and living with the natives like they were doing you could have seen more mixed communities forming like you have in Mexico.
