Well, it's not like I'd hide it behind a paywall. You do that with content people already know they want.
I'd more than likely just do X free animations a month, allow people to commission animations they want to have made, and take donations, letting people that donate over X dollars per month have input on what the next animation to be done will be.
If people post them here, that's just free advertisement.
Before you start thinking about how to monetize your SFM animations, make sure you can actually make something... While it's true that SFM is easier to use than the competing 3D animation tools, it's still not exactly a walk in the park and it will take you a lot of time before you have anything that can even hold a candle to the quality of some of these, such as >>8035355
which as someone who dabbles in SFM I can say that took forever. Basically what I'm saying is make sure you can actually make something and then worry about how you can make money from it. You could probably net a couple of thousand through Patreon every month *IF AND ONLY IF** you were good and produce content consistently. Don't put the cart before the horse, as it were. :)
That's good then. The barrier for entry is lowered for you if you know what the fuck you're doing in Source. You should start assembling a body of work now, pick characters you think are hot and get making stuff, then make a Tumblr and post it there. Be sure to follow other animators, and be sure to use the tagging system on Tumblr so people find your work. I think the best way to build a following is to be consistent with your releases, say "1 new animation every 2 weeks" or something to keep people coming back. You could also post here and do what everyone else does by watermarking your animations so people go to you when they want more. Once you have a following, then you can go to Patreon and offer rewards for contributing a lot. Really though, you need to start doing stuff to get your name out there. Good luck.

The point is, SFM isn't rendering software. It's a movie maker. Furthermore, I don't think I've seen anyone has tout it as the be all, end all of 3D software; it's just easy to learn and use.
The point is you don't understand what rendering is. SFM has an internal rendering engine that is part of the source engine. It -is- rendering software, just like any game engine or standalone renderer, and it's not a good one. It's miles behind Unreal Engine, for instance, in terms of both visual quality and speed.

No, it isn't. Nothing is implied there. There is no subtext. It's all out in the open. SFM is overrated as a rendering platform. It's slow for a real-time renderer, and low quality for an offline renderer. Its output is of generally low visual quality. The depth of field is essentially a noise filter.
As long as we're on the subject, it's overrated as an animation solution and as a nonlinear editor as well. It lacks basic features of both classes of software.
About the only thing it is notable for is democratization of 3d animation.
iClone 4 isn't paid. 3Delight isn't paid. LuxRender isn't paid. Fucking Blender and DAZ Studio aren't paid.

Getting content into the Source engine is notoriously difficult. Even Gaben talks about how bad it is currently. Virtually all other software, paid and unpaid, professional or hobbyist, accepts FBX files. If SFM ran on anything other than the Source engine, it would have much more content, because of the ready availability of FBX assets and the fact that literally everyone could make assets for it without using Blender or shitting up their DCC application with 3rd party plugins specifically for Source.
Hell, you would even be able to directly import buildings and props from Google's 3d Warehouse.
People use SFM because it's free, because it's retard-level simple, and because they want to jack off to video game characters or make money off of the work of real CG artists.

Honestly, just so I wouldn't have to port all the game content out of it and set it up in the other programs.
One the one hand, SFM offers a bunch of game characters people seem to want to fap to. On the other, it's a tremendous pain in the ass to get new content into it. I just need to decide which porting bullshit I want to put up with, since I know I am going to be making my own content for a lot of stuff.
Probably I'll settle on porting models out of Source via Blender and quickly re-rigging them in Maya, so I can just use Maya to make the new stuff I want to make. I'm pretty insane, so it'll be stuff like [spoiler] Samus with crazy over the top power armor (that still somehow reveals her sexy bits) equipped with a robopenis with which she can pound an alternate universe version of herself [/spoiler] .

Don't dismiss SFM. It's quick, so your productivity (and earning rate) should be better (unless you're a wiz at Maya). I think that people are more interested in paying for niche content rather than high quality.
Finding a market is the main thing. Look at animopron's patreon for someone making decent money. I think he just churns out Lara being fucked by horses in 3dsmax. You can see examples of his stuff on rule34hentai. Animators such as noname55 build up a following without being too specialized, but it all takes time.
The people willing to hand over most money want recognizable characters usually in futa or bestiality, anthro stuff, or general characters in specialized fetishes. You might have ideas that excite you, but you won't necessarily find people who share your tastes.
