What are some cool things to put in the 5.25" bay?

Pic related was probably the best $10 I ever spent on my computer. It was super fucking useful. Current case doesn't have 5.25" bays though so I gave it to a friend.

can you backup data on those?
>>

Actually, that's kinda a good idea...
>>
>>52960911
Probably, but a CD would hold like 7 times the data.
>>
>>52960176
Thats pretty neat!
>>
I think there's a quad slot hotswap 2.5 bay out there. I've been considering building an itx backup rig using one.

tape drive
4x2.5" hotswap
optical drive
>>
>>52960997
Way more than that, surely... A data cassette tape can only hold 660 kb on each side, I remember those on commodore 64. That is about 1.3 mb per cassette. A CD can hold way more than 7 times that.

I bought one of those.

I always knew you shouldn't use sata spliters/extenders as chinese quality control is completely shit and it's not uncomon to burn drives with missaligned pins shortcircuiting the HD's board.

Yet I completely failed to realize the same level of shitty chinese quality controle would be used on one of those shit drive bays and when I put one of my hard drives in there, it fried its board.

So, don't buy one of this fuckers unless is from a respectable company. Unfortunately on my country we have no such option.

It wasn't this model, it was a generic chinese moodel, this was the first "hd 5.2 dock" image I found on google images similar to my chinese one.
>>
>>52960176
I've always wanted one of these. Sadly they don't make them anymore.

>>52961839
He means you can use it as either one. Fits a cup, holds ash just fine too.

It almost certainly takes very little (relative) effort to make one of these
http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/battery-products/cigarette-lighter-assemblies/393792?k=cigarette
Digikey has assloads of cigarette lighters for sale.

So theoretically all you need to do is get a cigarette lighter assembly, a MOLEX cable, and connect it to the 12V rail.
Get drilling fgt.

Isn't tape backup the most reliable one?
>>
>>52959703
nothing would be better than that

>I always knew you shouldn't use sata spliters/extenders as chinese quality control is completely shit and it's not uncomon to burn drives with missaligned pins shortcircuiting the HD's board.

I just switched over my 4 hard drives in my computer from from direct PSU SATA power cables to a couple of LP4 molex to SATA splitters.

Am I fucked? If it works, am I fine? Seems to be working fine right now.

The only thing that beats tape in longevity is MDisc but the cost per gigabyte is lower with tape.

what will happen to you if you are in the same room as an automated tape library (opened) for several minutes?
>>
>>52960176
Have one, just not using it because all I was using it for was the DC power. I wouldn't bother with doing that though because the plug itself is a tad bit big in diameter and not the standard automotive size.

There are other uses for a 5.25" bay besides a 5.25" floppy drive?
