The problem with building a pc is making it fit in. The cases are too big and you risk overheating with smaller ones. The ps4 is nice and compact yet a gaming pc can't get anywhere near that.

It depends on needs.
If you're driving 4K 144hz (I don't know if that is a thing yet though) you're going to need one hell of a computer.
Hell, my computer cost about £1200 not all that long back and that struggles driving 1080@144 ultra on newer games.
Computers are expensive, yes you can spend money wisely, but you always get what you pay for.
Admittedly at diminishing return though.

You just don't need more than one monitor when there are workspaces like the ones found in every major linux DE or Windows 10's desktops feature.

feels great having both 3:4 and 16:9 ratio monitors. too bad no operating system gets fullscreen applications right. on linux/bsd, fullscreen will put 1024x768 ratio program in the middle of the two monitors. in windows it will only fullscreen to the primary monitor and the only way to get it to second monitor is to completely turn off the first monitor (as if primary, secondary monitor will take over taskbar and windows assumes monitor is too small for 1024x768 monitor)

My 2009 build can only just run Trine 3 on medium settings. I would say for regular gaming you need to upgrade every six-twelve months or face having to knock down resolution and graphical settings.
