Faster than Windows 7, not asscancer like Windows 10

>but muh start menu
Classic Shell

What's your excuse to not use the best OS?
>>
>>52917547
8.1 had the same tracking cancer from 10 added in updates. There is literally no difference.
>>
>>52917571
Same as 7.
>>
>>52917571
There's substantially less than W10
>>
>>52917639
7 also had tracking installed in updates.
>>
I have a legal ($15) copy of Windows 8.1 that I plan to use until I quit Windows for good. I use Linux 80% of the time anyway.

I thought I would install Windows 10 to give developing Windows Store applications a try but there doesn't seem to be much of a market there.
>>
>>52917547
But i do, anon.

>>52917571
>>52917639
>>52917665
Just don't install those update.

>>
>>52917547
>Classic Shell
>>52917571
The main reason why I'm still on 8.1+CS is because like W7, it has had more time for people to develop 'control' over it/'lock' it down without VM'ing.

I'll just wait out until W10 gets a proper lock down, like 7 & 8.1.

Though, the actual improvements from W10, like that window quarter-snapping feature and accurate search functionality (minus the spying, W10 start search bar is superior compared to CS, honestly).
>>
>>52917547
I just hate haing to install third party software to make my computing experience comparable to Windows 7. Windows 8's UI is absolute fucking dogshit.
>>
Why do people even need classic shell?

I'm absolutely serious. 100%.
And why was the fucking start button such a big deal to you either?
>>
>>52917547
>What's your excuse to not use the best OS?
None because I'm using Debian.
>>
>>52917869
Because the Start Menu indexing function just works with classic shell.

You press the win key, type what you want and it shows up.

Without classic shell, it displays the somehow laggy (i5 2500k+980Ti, 32GB of RAM) Start Screen and the results are fucking garbage for some reason, pressing enter will in 99% of the cases take you to a search instead of what you actually want.
>>
It's identical to Windows 7, sans telemeshit
>>
>>52917934
Weird. Even on my Core2Duo machine, Windows 8's start screen's search reliably started the program I want.

But I'm not doubting your words. If that's how it works for you then yeah, you should use classic shell.
>>
Are people really still using a classic start menu?
Or is it just a meme?
>>
>>52917547
>Faster than Windows 7
Retard. Still:

> 8.1 has broken shadow copy
> lacks NFS
> lacks media centre
> 3rd oarty start menus are garbage (the often do not update recently used programs list)
> no aero glass
> no classic theme (at least the option to disable composition)
> two control panels
> two internet explorers
> cloud integration
> shit task manager
> 10% market share (good luck having this OS eve get considered by devs/MS)
>>
>>52917984
I use it, even though I don't need it at all.

The only reason I use it is because it shows folder shortcuts, ayy.

I have 'Everything' for my searching needs.
>>
>>52917547
But I am using windows 8.1

Literally 0 reason to upgrade or downgrade.
>>
>>52917984
But senpai, how else will I quickly get to my shortcuts? My desktop is empty.
>>
>>52918117
>shadow copy

>nfs
dont need

>media center
dont need

>start menus
dont need(classic shell is fine if you absolutely need one)

>no aero glass
what the fuck, who likes that ugly shit?

>no classic theme
ugly

>two control panels
i have not used the metro control panel since i installed 8.1

>two internet explorers
the fuck, uninstalling internet explorer is like the first thing you do. use chrome/firefox

>cloud integration
you're talking about onedrive? yea, can be completely removed.

>shit task manager
I actually agree, but you can easily just use win7's task manager. I do it all the time.

>10% market share
who cares

How do you know which updates are telemetry free, and those that aren't? It's not like MS makes their updates descriptive.

security patch v123234523454 could be just another telemetry update.

you basically have to place your trust in random ass people, who are probably underage and have no idea what's legit or not.

Does 10 Enterprise really have all the telemetry shit off? Thinking of going xubuntu with KVM on my desktop.

Where did you get that from?

Both 8 and 10 are privacy offenders, 8 less so than 10 but still. Enterprise or not.

I'm with ya op, 8.1 is perfect right now. More mature codebase than 10, but much newer and modern than 7. 8.1 is in the prime of its life.

Also the Start Screen is much better than the menu tbqh, like shown in >>52919549
>>
>>52918564
I keep that and Windows updates disabled with a .bat

>net stop wuauserv
>sc config wuauserv start= disabled
>schtasks.exe /Change /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\UpdateOrchestrator\Reboot" /Disable

Once a month I enable and install updates.

>sc config wuauserv start= auto
>net start wuauserv

I did the same with win8

Is it bad that I like the metro in 8.1? I'm just so used to it.

I have 7 on my laptop and I enjoy that as well, but when I try desktops/lap tops with 10 I feel like I don't know what I'm doing and it's overly confusing.
>>
>>52929979

Slower search

I can start programs in windows 7 by hitting the start key and smacking the program I want before the start menu even opens.

Windows 8 has the whole metro then it's own search app to go through before it will start a program.

But if you are running Intel/Amd you already have backdoored hardware with internal battery backup. They don't want you to know.
Luckily the backdoor only works on Windows as Linux kernel is patched against it.
