Why is Japan so far ahead technologically?
Their companies basically run the camera world and gaming world and their phones were always way ahead of everything else. Why then has the iPhone taken off there?
That was a deliberate action by Nikon, because Japan didn't produce anything high quality at the time and they wanted to change that.
It probably worked because the Russians occupied most of Germany, which ruled the camera world before WW2.
>their phones were always way ahead of everything else.
Because they spend a lot of time on public transport.
So they were OK with paying a lot for mobile devices to keep them entertained as they travel.
For a good while there East Germany had a large share of the camera market even in the west.
That all changed though after the failed 'reunification' and the subsequent state asset fire sales.
I remember Prakticas being pretty good.
With some exceptions East German products weren't that bad, particularly those destined for export. They just couldn't make them in any significant quantity, and they were never the absolute best products.
As for 'fleeing' to the west? It wasn't nearly as common as you'd think. Most of their technology was squandered by the Russians (as war repatriations), who ended up giving it back after a decade and a half (when other countries had caught up anyway).
If their industry was allowed to run uninterrupted in the post-war period, Germany might still have been camera centre of the world.
Japan, like German, they have excellent craftsmanship. Also the Japanese have a spiritual practice or some sort that appreciates simplicity. >>52897790 I have seen a kettle that has feature similar to Apple's magsafe, and sometimes that just nuts. But as we are in this 20th century where money is all things are dying now.
Because once a large business is established with a working business model it is hard for it to be displaced.
It's rather abitrary apart from that.
Why do Americans make popular search engines?
Japan is backwards as fuck when it comes to software and should study Steve Jobs when it comes to software and marketing. It's a shame because companies like Sony usually have great hardware but shit software. The place that birthed akio Morita which jobs himself tried to copy. A shame.
If anyone wants proof go to any typical Japanese wrbsite. They really need some lessons in design. It's weird. Japan has always been a culture of priding itself in its hardware and valuing physical things, but then when they make something immaterial they just go full retard
Japan is pretty good at taking a technology developed by someone else and simplifying the design process to make it smaller or more efficient. But for a long time they've been slow at adopting new technology at the consumer level.
For example it wasn't uncommon for small business to still use fax machines instead of email, or for people to still use flip-phones instead of smart-phones. I think it's a cultural thing where stuff isn't replaced just because there's something newer around, but is kept in use as long as possible.
>I think it's a cultural thing where stuff isn't replaced just because there's something newer around, but is kept in use as long as possible.
This. The US has a "newer is always better" culture, especially when it comes to electronics. Companies spend billions marketing new shit that just isn't a worthwhile improvement on it's predecessors, but people still buy the shit out of it.
Hell, there was a report that flip phones saw a noticeable rise the past few years because they're so much cheaper than smart phones.
A testament to this fact is the number of Japanese ex-pats you see. Which is barely any, because no one wants to leave Japan.
Tons of Chinese people leave China; enough that there's a Chinatown in almost every major city in the globe. Ditto for Koreans, albeit to a much lesser extent due to the proportionally smaller population. Meanwhile if you see a Japanese restaurant anywhere outside Japan it's probably owned by Koreans/Chinese taking advantage of all the dumbass whites that don't know a Japanese restaurant shouldn't have Kimchi on the menu.
It's vexing because Japs are also the most western-looking (and therefore least ugly) asians, and for someone with yellow fever you'll probably never see them in the wild.
This quick casual documentary gives an idea on how japan companies thrived in the new era over the old ones.
It's about cars but it applies to other tech as well obviously.
Literally retarded. Their animation is second to none, as well as comic books. Music is quite good also, in a similar way to Western music (ie ignore the shit, find the hit).
They make pretty good horror movies, but I don't know about any other genre
Writing is pretty good if the poems and fairy tales are anything to go by.
"work", he says.
The average Salaryman's workday consists of 3-4 hours snail-pace labor, 5-8 hours of fucking around talking to colleagues or on social networking sites/yahoo, and frequent ~2 hour after-work drinking sessions.
True, they barely see their families, but do not operate under the assumption these people are actually working those infamous 12 hour shifts.
I can't recall any worthwhile recent movies. The last good ones I saw were 13 assassins and Outrage and Outrage beyond by beat takeshi, meanwhile there are loads of manga adaptions which just ends up being mediocre and not true to the sources imho
Takashi miike which I considered the japanese quentin tarantino only makes shit movies nowadays
The days of slow traveling information is dead. The copy and tweak approach is no longer working hence the reason all their companies are sinking. Japan should stick with making music instruments, cameras and video games. Everything else is a losing proposition. Having 10 meetings to make small decisions is killing them.
I always imagine people who complain about American media being "unemotional" while Japan is so "expressive" is because they have some sort of mental condition, like Aspergers, that makes it difficult for them to read human emotions.
Kind of like how Big Bang Theory needs a laugh track to explain to the audience when they say a funny joke.
Oh I do too. Pic related. Sort of good, but sort of a disappointment at the same time because they try to cram as much shit into one movie, which I of course understand is an artwork in and of itself since it's a movie. But what I'm saying is that it's not healthy for an industry. Hollywood does this sometimes too, or they make endless fucking sequels or rehashes of the same shit, but at least we see a lot of original shit every year
>I have aspergers and ADHD and ADDHDD
I swear to fuck all of those mental "conditions" are just made up bullshit that people use to try to ignore shit parenting. All 3 of the dumb fucks in my capstone group are on adderall for "ADHD" and pot smokers. Obviously they're all normal people with shit parenting that made them grow up into garbage.
It's because (1) japan has a culture of saving and not spending, (2) the economy is slumping and has since the 90s and (3) japanese view consumer tech as home appliances which you dont change out that often. It's why you see so many people still packing ancient laptops with vista or windows XP still
We actually do convey emotions in real life through arm and hand gesture in what I gues northern Europeans and Americans would call "too expressive"
I know you guys make fun of us for it but you don't really get how deep this goes
Like the switch between Italian and dialect when talking and making actually emotional faces
It's just a different culture that was inherited from inprov theater in the Renaissance
If you're referring to modern shit that air on cartoon networks? no
if you're referring to disney, then top kek because they backed out of that business, but yeah when they still animated they did a good job, BUT ONLY because disney had massive amount of funds to actually warrant such smooth animation. If you compare that to japan they barely survive
>Western animation is only more expensive
I remember the pictures about the Simpson's Movie and 5 cm/s or whatever. One had a fuck-huge budget and looked like generic shit and the other had amazing detail in every scene.
How in the hell does Japan run the gaming world?
All the major gaming studios are from the Western world.
Japan didn't know dick on how to network gaming, and if it were left to them, we'd still all be playing single player games.
All innovation in gaming is from the western world such as physics, AI, etc..
Even during WWII, if Japan didn't steal their tech from the Western World they bought it from Western companies.
Yew, Japanese web pages are perfect. Simple text based designs that provide infornation.
Compare that to our shitty web 2.0 sites with needless animations packed full of ads at 20 mbs a page.
Function comes before form.
Part of that is Japan's love of beuracracy. It get absurd at times. If you ever apply to a Japanese business or school your mind will be blown by the amount of useless information they ask for. You have to have a government registered seal to use as a signature even.
Part of that is because Japanese flip phones wre just as capble as blackberrys and early smartphones. TThey really took off around the iPhone 4 though.
Currently living in Japan. iPhones are popular here but theres a fucking TON of "smart" flip phones, too.
You're likely misinformed about a lot of stuff. Japan is great, really great, but it's got a lot of problems, too.
I love it here though. Fucking amazing.
Japanese animation is acutally pretty shit. It's a common misconception from a lot of weebs, mostly people who don't know the differance between animation(movment and how it flows) and art style. Most anime now isn't even drawn in Japan but in Korea. What's worse is that Japanese animators don't even make much even from those super popular shows and not only that but are also under staff a lot. I remember when Kyoani Studio was begging for pretty much anyone to come work for them. If someone ask what country is good at cutting corners when animating then Japan would be the kings at it.
And let me paint a crude picture for you guys. 1 episode of Family Guy cost more to produce then an entire season(12 episodes) of anime. Why? because animation cost way more money then art style, which is what most anime rely on.
>the Russians occupied most of Germany,
>theres a fucking TON of "smart" flip phones
I wish you could get those outside of Japan.
My smartphone is often activated merely by jostling about in my pocket, and the haptic feedback from these incidents drives me up the fucking wall. Worse is when someone calls me and I accidentally disconnect them simply trying to pull the damn thing out.
Never had any of these issues with a clamshell.
>bullet trains in japan have their own tracks
Meanwhile in germany our ICE 3 uses a linear eddy current brake that can only be safely used on a few tracks which limits it's top speed to 200km/h in most cases.
>Why is Japan so far ahead technologically?
It's not, their technological sector is dysfunctional and is only kept alive by forcing the japanese tax payers to pay your cheap shit.
They plan to have the new linear rail up and running (between Nagoya and Tokyo at least) in time for the 2020 Olympics.
The test track was already the longest maglev run in the world after it's expansion.
Japanese websites are fucking awful. They have a ridiculous ammount of ad's just for 1 pages. My ublock blocks an instant 50-100+ ads on their streaming sites. And don't get me started on what they use for .gif on Pixiv, fucking Ugoira's.
Of course blobs are a lot easier to animate.
Windows 7 was basically just Vista SP2 with a reskinned UI. Vista sucked at launch but you make yourself look like an idiot when you claim it sucks this far down the track. When I bought a W7 laptop I literally didn't see any difference besides a few cosmetic and convenience features.
AT's simplistic art is a design choice to make it easily accessible for people of all ages, and as it happens it was a good choice because the show is enjoyed by people of all ages
there's also something to be said for the cost of retaining the actors of these shows which may have different cultural implications than that of japan
Not him but it's Gargantia. Kinda a B- anime, worth a watch if you like mecha-lite (mecha as a backdrop but not the main part of the show). I still haven't the whole thing but at least the first half is very drama-comedy-romance.
Read the synopsis it's kinda got an ok back story.
>Windows 7 was basically just Vista SP2 with a reskinned UI.
>When I bought a W7 laptop I literally didn't see any difference besides a few cosmetic and convenience features.
the same is true for windows 8 and 8.1, people like to shit on windows 8 for the "horrible tablet ui!!" but as soon as you pressed the win key to get to the desktop it's exactly the same operating system with a few new features and everything else where it used to be, just without a start menu
>It costs so much because of the voice actors.
>the man who voices a good hand full of the male characters in his own show
>is the main reason Family Guy cost so much to make
Him and the rest of those shitty VA's aren't the reason. Try again.
He's not the only voice actor in family guy. The other people are all fairly big names and certainly take a hefty chunk of cash. Much more so than Japanese voice actors.
But yes, Japanese animators are also paid slave wages, so that helps keep costs down too.
>>the man who voices a good hand full of the male characters in his own show
>>is the main reason Family Guy cost so much to make
right, and as such every time his contract is up (or for any of the other major VA's) he can renegotiate his salary as much as he wants because without seth macfarlane there is no family guy
while family guy's quality has gone down over the years, they've done a shit ton of specials within the last few years that have a much higher quality of animation and are going to contribute to the increase budget per episode for that season because the budget per episode is derived from the overall budget of the season
It isn't, and it hasn't been for a while. They are ahead in robotics and camera technology. Westerns who have worked in Japanese companies note how backwards they are in their use of IT in their companies. Many Japanese people don't use a PC but do everything on their phones instead. It's not the technological powerhouse people think it is. It gained that reputation because they like robots and they were in fact ahead in things for a while, in the 80s and 90s. Not anymore. America is better in most things, and Taiwan, China and especially Korea are at least on their level in most things. The reason they dominate camera technology still is that the Koreans could not go in, subvert some of their engineers away, and replicate it. The way cameras are made, there's a lot of tacit knowledge involved that you can't simply copy.
Their phones are not ahead. The best smartphones are made by the likes of Samsung and Apple. Japanese smartphones might be just on that level, but definitely not better. And their sales are not good. If they were really so much better than everyone would be buying them, and as you pointed out, even the Japanese want iPhones because they are just better.
>The other people are all fairly big names and certainly take a hefty chunk of cash.
Oh, some of those names didn't hit me until I actually looked them up. Yeah I see what you mean now.
No. It isn't. It's just a country. It's not that good. It's cool and different, but it's not the best at much by objective standards, and certainly not by technological standards. In terms of patents and innovation, in terms of actual sales of smartphones, in terms of actual societal adoption of technology they are quite behind the west, many companies still have paper offices with many Japanese unable to do basic things that we take for granted in the west. Only someone with an idealistic, fictional view of Japan thinks it's just the best place there is, like some magical land where everyone is smart and everything is better..
Oh yeah that's another good point. The Japanese internet is disgusting and way behind. I hear that in Japan programmers and developers are paid poorly and treated like shit too.
Hand crafting isn't always better. Their cameras are better because the companies know how to make better cameras. And if other people can't compete with you, you can afford the inefficient of hand craft.
Japan is actually full of ass-backward fucks who still use flip phones. What you see on tech review sites and animu doesn't reflect real life at all in nipland.
a lot of big japanese tech companies are only still around because they're basically tied legally to banks. the banks are set up specifically to loan money to them, the banks pour money in, they never see a return because the company isn't profitable, but it becomes a better solution to simply lend more than it does to let the company collapse and take the bank with it
their whole tech sector is on the verge of crisis, it's literally staring death in the face
true, and same applies to creating music, art and game design
> prove me not with logic and reason, you cant
> guaranteed no replies
As I said before.
The DDR could make good shit.
Their biggest failing if anything was making consumer products too accessable.
Like a significant majority of the population could afford a new car every few years. The only problem was that they could never produce cars in that quantity and speed.
It's not like western manufacturers were any better at making cars, it's just that they used better price signalling (which made the consumer feel responsible for not having access to a new car, rather than the system).
Their system might even be semi-viable now that automation is so good and things can be produced so quickly. That's an experiment to be conducted in the future though.
Turned off uMatrix and uBlock and opened pages one at a time while paying attention to how much RAM firefox is using. Each page requires an additional 100 MB-150 MB of RAM, for comparison a page on 4chan uses about 2 MB of RAM. Why is this even allowed?
Japan's economy has never recovered from its 90s recession. Their companies are still run like it's the fucking 80s. Early 80s.
They will not be a superpower in 20 years. The only thing that could possibly save that country is mass immigration.
Well, to be fair, Japanese population is really dying off. Nobody immigrates because most people are not willing to learn the language and Japanese can't even learn basic English... Considering how good their education is, it's nonsense not to be able to speak decently at least one foreign language.
moon language has very limited range of sounds thus making it extremely difficult to pick up other languages, especially pronunciation wise
I think that pronunciation is your least problem when you can't create one proper sentence. I don't see in their education that much, but if in European shithole I live in is basic knowledge of at least 2 foreign languages (that's usually English and German) expected and taught in schools with laughable financing, something must be very wrong. I heard that you just have to be English speaker and you pretty much can teach, but I don't know if that's true.
No. Like every other country that has been experiencing shit birth rates, this shit is a fad and will end within several years. There is no need for mass immigration
Pronunciation isn't the problem. If they aren't used to hearing a sound, it is hard for the listener to distinguish it and actually hear the world properly. When I took Arabic I coyldn't even tell how many words were in a sentence I listened to for a few months.
Then if you aren't used to speaking a sound, then you will struggle to form a word period.
[THIS IS WHAT LIBERALS ACTUALLY BELIEVE]
Hiroshima is full of Japanese people.
Detroit is full of niggers.
>let's import Africans to our country
>what could go wrong
>they will save us with their high birth rates
Here is a proper version of the image.
It correctly states that the problem is "diversity" (i.e. shitskins).
