With some exceptions East German products weren't that bad, particularly those destined for export. They just couldn't make them in any significant quantity, and they were never the absolute best products.

As for 'fleeing' to the west? It wasn't nearly as common as you'd think. Most of their technology was squandered by the Russians (as war repatriations), who ended up giving it back after a decade and a half (when other countries had caught up anyway).
If their industry was allowed to run uninterrupted in the post-war period, Germany might still have been camera centre of the world.

Japan is pretty good at taking a technology developed by someone else and simplifying the design process to make it smaller or more efficient. But for a long time they've been slow at adopting new technology at the consumer level.

For example it wasn't uncommon for small business to still use fax machines instead of email, or for people to still use flip-phones instead of smart-phones. I think it's a cultural thing where stuff isn't replaced just because there's something newer around, but is kept in use as long as possible.

Most anime now isn't even drawn in Japan but in Korea. It isn't, and it hasn't been for a while. They are ahead in robotics and camera technology. Westerns who have worked in Japanese companies note how backwards they are in their use of IT in their companies. Many Japanese people don't use a PC but do everything on their phones instead. It's not the technological powerhouse people think it is. It gained that reputation because they like robots and they were in fact ahead in things for a while, in the 80s and 90s. Not anymore. America is better in most things, and Taiwan, China and especially Korea are at least on their level in most things. The reason they dominate camera technology still is that the Koreans could not go in, subvert some of their engineers away, and replicate it. The way cameras are made, there's a lot of tacit knowledge involved that you can't simply copy.

It's not like western manufacturers were any better at making cars, it's just that they used better price signalling (which made the consumer feel responsible for not having access to a new car, rather than the system).

I think that pronunciation is your least problem when you can't create one proper sentence. I don't see in their education that much, but if in European shithole I live in is basic knowledge of at least 2 foreign languages (that's usually English and German) expected and taught in schools with laughable financing, something must be very wrong. I heard that you just have to be English speaker and you pretty much can teach, but I don't know if that's true.

Pronunciation isn't the problem. If they aren't used to hearing a sound, it is hard for the listener to distinguish it and actually hear the world properly. When I took Arabic I coyldn't even tell how many words were in a sentence I listened to for a few months.

Then if you aren't used to speaking a sound, then you will struggle to form a word period.
