Fuck. It's not a solid 1k. I'm willing to throw in 2-400 more if it saves me from a future upgrade. That's including accesories like KB+M and a monitor. I have nothing to build off of.

That's really as high as I'd be willing to go though considering how little time I actually have to play now that I'm salaried.

Windows 10 has DX12 support and minor performance improvements. I'd go with that.

No way you can do it with 980ti, just not possible. You will have to use that 1300-1400 only for the pc parts if you want 980ti.

Maybe you can get 100-200 off it if you pick cheap crap but that's just stupid.

Suddenly, power button does nothing. Peripherals still light up, and so does green led on the motherboard. No audio or visual reaction to the power button. Tried switching the reset and power pins, no change. Could be the PSU, MOBO, or case, no idea.

How the fuck do I isolate the problem? Should I try using a coin to short the power? Just how risky is that?
>>
>>52875238
Woah thanks, Anon.

One last question and then my next step is price matching, ordering, and build guides.

Do most mobos have integrated WiFi now, or do I need to get a WiFi USB adapter? I know sound cards are basically obsolete now because of that. Also, how do you know if a specific mobo will work with a specific tower?

Motherboards just confuse the shit out of me in general.

Really appreciate all the help, by the way.
>>
>>52875359
Only the most expensive mobos have wifis. Sound cards/USB DACs still not obsolete.

Select an ATX tower and ATX mobo and it will fit. Select an m-ATX (or ATX) tower and m-ATX mobo and it will fit.
>>

>>
>>52875359
There might be some but i havent heard of that being a thing since the early 2000's
It would be pretty shitty anyway due to the lack of an external antennas
Just grab a usb adapter or you can buy a pci wifi card what would have an external bolt on antenna

If you need to share files just use openbittorrent
>>

>>52875568
1. I want the torrent to be attached to a throwaway account.
2. It's content that is potentially going to get me banned on 4chan, due to DMCA, so I need it on somewhere outside too.
Opentorrent is a good idea, if someone will rehost it on some public site...

Why would you need a hosting website?
Make the torrent and give it to the person(s) and have them use it

What is his super secret top secret classification data that you need to manage.
Why does having a throwaway account matter.

there are no person(s) yet. The person(s) are interested people in one of the boards.
Once it gains momentum, I have nothing to worry about. It's just about getting there.

Double check the bios for virtualization. Some bios updates have the habit of turning this setting off.
>>
>>52875747
Building:
Get everything ready, get away from turf, dont wear wool socks.
Touch something metalic or buy a meme band to get rid of static.
Dont rush it, take your time if its your first time, watch some videos first done with your motherboard and/or your case.
Remember to put the standoff screws, you dont want to fuck your MOBO.

Put everything in order first.

Put your motherboard over the box it came in, then put the CPU first.
Then put only a dot of your termal paste in the middle of the CPU.
When you put the HSF over the CPU to install it in the MOBO remember to screw the other side of the last screw you did.
Example:
12
34

If you started with 1 then you do 4, then 3 and then 2.

Dont forget fucking cable management, its not a meme.

Soo i tried to clean the (presumably overloaded) cache in firefox but as soon as i clicked on "Clean All" the useless piece of shit browser shat itself completely and now when i try to re-open it instead of the last opened tabs it's just stuck there and freezes with one single "new tab" being opened and it doesn't open the previous session like it did before.

I went away to make myself something to eat and when i came back again (like 30 mins later) it was still idling there in "new tab" driving the PC fan crazy... Thing is that as of late it was pretty much useless for browsing stuff too, it took a shitton of time for even a simple page to open and stuff

Is it safe to assume that this shit just isn't salvageable and that it's time for me to nuke it and set everything up from scratch again? Where do i find the extensions/their settings and so on, are they all included in the profile ordner and can be just ported over once i've re-installed it again?

What kinds of knowledge should be had prior to learning to program?

I tried teaching myself to code in python as a hobby, and I immediately realized how little I know about computers, and how to operate one, in general.

I decided to switch to linux, if only to get out of my comfort zone and be forced to learn new things. Just spend the last 2 days teaching myself to use the command line, and now I'm looking to build on that. I have access to study materials for A+, network+ and linux+ certifications.

Think it's worth taking a few months to digest those three study courses before I continue with teaching myself to code?

So I recently switched to musicbee and I really like it so far, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove/hide this selector. I can add/remove what's displayed in it (albums, rating, artist, etc) but it seems redundant when I have that stuff showing other places, and it wont let me remove all of them, one has to stay. Most I can do is put in a custom field with nothing in it.

not really. i have the a+ and ccna and that shit has very little to do with programming. most of the programmers that i went to school with didn't know the difference between a router and a switch. if you're goal is just programming i wouldn't waste time learning that shit. maybe some a+ shit if you know absolutely nothing about computers or their basic components

lets say i want to run webserver X on a server
is there any reason i would ever want to run X on a virtual os hosted on my own dedicated server instead of just running it on the "real" os of my server
sorry if its a weird question
>>
>>52879328
You mean run it in a virtual machine? Because that gives you a sandbox for it to run in and you can back up a full version of it that was functional if something goes wrong, also you would be able to run multiple ones from a single PC
>>
>>52879328
Sure, lots of reasons.

Lets say you install ESXi or Xen or Linux/KVM or some shit as your hypervisor. Then spin up a VM to run your actual environments in. Virt tech gives you a lot of advantages, you can spin up and destroy VM's on a whim, back them up easily, take snapshots, etc etc etc. They're a more efficient use of hardware resources and $$$.

Now lets say you just want to run a single webserver, a mail server (pls don't) and some other software, and have no real plans to go beyond that. It's no problem to just stick it on a hardware server.

Virtualization really shines when your infrastructure needs to scale up.

You may also want to look into containers, btw.

Yes, what your describing is sandboxing. A safe environment separate from things it might to harm to. Mainly for security but there have been exploits found that allow sandboxed code to escape into the host.

looks like that is just running a modified VM to give the VM more advantages. A lot like VMware Extensions.

Containers like Docker and LXC simply create a space for multiple instances of Apache, for example. Separate namespaces, views of the filesystem, etc. Not a whole lot to do with VM's, really.

Xen is interesting and flexible, if I'm being totally fair. I just remember starting out trying to "learn VM's" by starting with it, and it being a bitch. KVM is much, much easier to get a grasp of for new people, tbqh senpai.

I know from every technical and freedom standpoint out there, HTML5/JS is many times better than Flash.

However, I just want to make a quick buck, learn a language and write little web games to get sponsored by Kongregate and ArmorGames and such. From that perspective, what should I use? I'm not proficient in either language yet, I'm choosing which one to learn.

I don't want to deal with ad revenue. I'm just looking for sponsorships.

i want to browse sad panda on my phone
how do i edit chrome cookies to let me do it?
any apps for it?
if no can i manually edit them? where are they and do i need root permissions to change them manually
if none of the above is possible any browser that can do cookies editing?
>>
>>52879723
Yeah, but can I monetize it easily in the short term? That's my question.

I don't care about knowledge with no value. It will be fuck easy to learn either language in no time. I just want to spend a couple weeks on a game, go to a website for sponsorship, and get handed a thousand-dollar check once and then forget about it.

I would prefer to use HTML5/JS--already have some prior knowledge there--but I'm concerned that it will be more difficult to get sponsorships. All the big game sponsors use Flash as far as I know. (My favorite is Armor Games, and I think they're exclusively flash). I don't want to rely on ad revenue, I just want to make a one-time sale.

I'm planning on upgrading some parts in my pc, I was going to buy a new one all together but I'd rather just replace parts.

My main problem is that whenever i'm doing multiple things at once, say i'm torrenting something and playing a game, something happens that causes my keyboard/mouse and everything else that's connected to my usb, just shuts off, this happens for a two minute period until everything turns back on again. Though it shuts back off within the next 30 seconds and just repeats in a cycle like that. When I restart my computer I don't have this problem at all until I start doing multiple heavy tasks, I believe it's my motherboard. Am I right? Should it be the first thing I replace?
>>
>>52879907
No. Any time an issue arises due to multitasking, you should suspect the RAM first. You should try replacing the RAM first--partly because that's the cheapest replacement, and if that's not the problem, it's still good to have a few known-good RAM sticks sitting around.

Make sure to buy the right RAM for your motherboard.

I have a Netgear WNR2000v5 that disconects from my two Toshiba laptops after a few hours (one is a recent Ubuntu, other is recent Debian). I have to reboot to reconnect. Everything I have tried has failed: change to a channel/freq not used by neighbors, unload/reload modules, ifconfig up/down, etc. /var/log/syslog says that it authenticates but times out on the next step.

However, my Chromebook can recover. After being idle for a while, it will say "network unreachable" for a half second then it will be fine.

THE QUESTIONS:

Simple question, perhaps long explanation.

I(A) am switching mobile plan provider and I want to test the coverage in my area.

A friend of mine (B) lives close by. We can talk without trouble from our homes. B has the mobile phone provider I want to switch to.

The question is, should I ask him to switch phones for an hour and try to call him/receive calls from him?

I'm guessing that just making the test with our own phones wouldn't give all the info I need, since he (B) can be in an area covered by his company and I (A) could be in an area covered by mine. The reciprocal is false in general.

Sorry about sperging. I'd like confirmation on this. Thanks in advance.

The GPU is even harder for me as the only thing I can probably compare is the memory and probably shader technology.

For both CPUs and GPUs, the idea is the same but the architect is different

Cores/threads
OC ability
Age of CPU/generation
Wattage/power consumption
architecture/Instruction Set
single/multi core performance
price point
memory bandwidth/channel support
hyper threading
socket/chip set
heat output/clock
clock/# of gigahertz
Lithography
bandwidth
integrated graphics
32/64 bit support
Arm processors
L2/L3 cache

That's a list I made awhile back to answer this very question. If anyone has anything to add that's also helpful

I live somewhere with dirty power and it keeps murdering my power supplies so I am going to invest in a UPS unit

The power draw for JUST my desktop is around 600W~ at full load and my monitor is around 65W~ and those are probably the only two things I would need to run off the battery

Can anybody recommend a decent UPS for home use to suit my needs? I'm looking to spend around $200 AUD but can stretch a little

When shopping a cpu should I value core over gigahertz? What's the relation
>>
>>52882005
It's very stable, and it doesn't come with anything particularly unnnecessary (unlike Ubuntu).
>>
>>52882175
Pick gigahurts. 90% of all games don't make good use of more than 2 cores. If you're playing some fancy AAA titles then it's a different story, though.

Typically, at the same price bracket, a CPU with more cores will have a lower clock speed.
If you want both, you'll be shelling out a lot more money.
>>
>>52882155
You can't. Most people use the inline extension
>>
>>52882175

>Rich: Get i5-4460 and R9 390
>Very rich: Get i5-4690K and GTX 980 Ti
>>
>>52881567
In short: You can't.

In addition to >>52881606, you must realize that comparing CPUs and GPUs is like comparing cars to busses.
You can carry (up to) 4 people very fast from A to B, but if you want to carry 100 then it's going to have to make 25 trips.
On the other hand, a bus that can carry 100 people moves slower but you only need 1 trip.

I don't have a Windows installation cd, but is a (or several if that even matters) factory reset-recovery sufficient to effectively delete everything? Done it through bios-startup.
Can something persist if the above steps have been taken?

That's fucked. I'm honestly not sure since FF is actually copying the files to tmp and uploading them. If it didn't have to do that, I don't think it would just because

Factory restores don't always keep a full OS image on the recovery partition. Sometimes it's dependent on system files already inside system32

When I was in Windows 10 the other day I dropped my laptop. Picked it up and it kept working fine, but after restarting it now gets stuck in "attempting repairs" when I try to boot into Windows. Left it that way overnight and no progress.

I can still boot to Ubuntu, but can't get into Windows. It seems to me that, since I could keep working after the crash, all my files in Windows must still be there somewhere. Is there any way to repair windows without deleting my files?

We had T-Mobile over here a few years ago (and some people still "have" it), but it merged with another carrier, Orange, and became EE.

So you'll have service, but I still think you'll be charged roaming/foreign data. Check with them before you leave/get here would be best bet. Otherwise ask EE if you're in the UK already.

Since irl viruses can get infected by other viruses( source for proof: http://scienceblogs.com/notrocketscience/2008/08/07/the-virophage-a-virus-that-infects-other-viruses/) it got me thinking:

Can computer viruses, malware, Trojan horses...etc get infected and/or hijacked by other viruses, malware, Trojan horse..etc?

As a follow up question, can malware, viruses, Trojan horses infect a single program and corrupt or prevent a user from using said program without fucking up the rest of the computer?
