what's the biggest breakthrough that will make humanoid robots more common in homes?
Id say a strong, cheap compound/alloy needed to support its frame. Carbon fiber would be nice but too expensive. I think at this point the electronics/CPU/software/motors are all feasible, just not the physical aspect itself for consumer-grade purchasing
Personally i'd go for whichever is smoother, i've been kinda obsessed with the idea of cyborgs for a while so i'm incredibly excited with some of the things i've seen recently. But the movement is frankly far to stiff to really use efficiently. There's also the issue with controlling the things with sufficient accuracy.
It would definitely require huge advances, who knows from what field (a solution might come from a completely unexpected place) -- but that's basically the type of advance we need to really make humanoid robots a reality.
Creating more energy-efficient solutions for actuators and such will help as well, of course.
so batteries are the main thing holding back robots huh. that's a shame. i've studied a lot of areas and increasing battery density is probably the most difficult thing next to unifying gravity and quantum mechanics. i've heard of strides in nanowires being used to increase the area of reaction for electrodes, but even then it's not 10x or 100x better. damn, i just can't see what we'd need for such a jump.
What's with all these non answers in this thread?
The answer is just give them a vagina
ye, larger battery capacities are basically the thing that holds back most "things".
In most cases we've pushed all the other components far enough that battery capacity becomes the big issue... electric cars, drones, mobile phones/laptops/tablets, etc
If battery capacity would be increased by 10x-100x today, there would be basically no reason to ever use gas-powered cars again, to not put powerful x86 CPUs with 8 cores into your phone (well, sans the hole it will burn in your leg), to have robots walking around like humans and dogs, to have drones that can even lift humans, etc.
hmm, maybe i should focus my postdoc research on battery technology. i was originally studying cuprate superconductors to use as servos in robots so they can be cooled with magnetic refrigeration techniques, but maybe i could postpone that for another year.
Pricing and funcionality. Right now we're paying 200$ for something that does a crappy job at cleaning the floor.
We need to pay 200$ for something that does a lot more than that.
This is where my money's at but all synthetic muscles that use them so far take too long to relax and don't allow for fluid motion. Maybe I should become a chemist instead of a computer scientist.
i'm debating on becoming a material science, it seems that if one area is not gonna cut it, it will let me jump ship on another easier, or is that not the case? my other idea was physics with a ton of mathematics on the side.
I wanted to do CS with a double major in Math but those are both poverty tier stem choices so lately I've been thinking that I should just go for something completely different. Its still early enough for me.
i don't think CS with math is poverty tier. have you considered going into 3DCG or fluid simulation? those are areas in which you can't really call someone poor, since it's pretty much paramount to a lot of industries.
Haha I hadn't really considered what I'd do with the degrees yet. I was just sort of going into what interested me that wasn't something like feminist dance theory. I'll look into that.
A robot which has a battery but poor articulation isn't going to be much different than the shitty robots you can get and build today. They're going to be a shitty gimmick.
A robot that can cook or clean but has to be plugged in would have actual use.
That would be far more expensive to install than a solid, and quite superior europlug.
I guess it really comes down to what we'd use the robot for. If its purely for maidshit then it'll need fantastic articulation but if it's just a walking onahole then it just needs to move. Maybe not even that much.
>what's the biggest breakthrough that will make humanoid robots more common in homes?
You need to rephrase this question to: What's the biggest OBSTACLE to making robots more common in homes... and the answer is women/feminists. Because regardless of if robots are invented or not, women will almost immediately outlaw them.
has anyone ever used an electrostatic loudspeaker as an artificial vocal chord? i always wondered how it would sound chambered in an esophagus. maybe give a bit of realism if the mouth was fleshy.
>nobody cares what they think.
that's way too expensive.
on a side, i wonder if quantum/superconducting logic will play a major role in how we program machines. higher FLOP count could let them detect and recognize more shit, but with the way cloudfags are going i think it's going to be cast aside. feels awful
>person has opinion on thing
Big whoop. It'll sell, there's way more lonely fags who want to fugg XJ-9 than there's outraged feminists, and they will eagerly throw their neetbux at anyone promising them sweet gyndroid pussy.
>sexbots are completely off limits
>war drones are totally fine tho
>Big whoop. It'll sell
Not if it's illegal anon. They will outlaw it. Just search and you will find similar articles all written by women. They will take you robot-waifu.
Women really aren't powerful (or united) enough for that. Not for long, anyway.
It's not like men stopped vibrators from existing, so pretty sure women aren't able to stop progress, either.
>women aren't able to stop progress
That's ALL they do.
>how's that working out for them?
>Zoe Quin gets memoir book deal
>Zoe Quin gets movie deal based on book
They are getting rich.
>Zoe Quin and Anita Sarkeesian at the UN
They are getting people of power to listen to them.
>"It'll sell, there's way more lonely fags who want to fugg XJ-9 than there's outraged feminists, and they will eagerly throw their neetbux at anyone promising them sweet gyndroid pussy"
>A robot wouldn't even deny you sex saying "I have a headache tonight" or make drama out of everything
Well, it'll certainly be a rough battle against the feminists. But I am optimistic.
I have no idea who these people are, as I understand it they're talking about video games, why should I care about that? It's of no importance and has nothing to do with the topic at hand.
No idea but it can't come soon enough OP. Add full cyborg bodies to that as well.
>fucking robots is a waste of technology
Excuse me, nigger?
Creating fuck machines is the be-all end-all to technological and human advancement. Everything in our history since we started planting crops has been to advance this dream. Thousands of years of knowledge, struggle, blood, tears, and spirit have been all toward this one thing...
To fuck robots.
>not wanting to dick Jenny
>not wanting to make women practically obsolete and powerless
Oh come on Anon, what're you, a fag? It will be fun.
that's be the problem
many "intelligent" people will make the switch to artificial pleasure from actual robots that fulfill all your fetishes
women and men alike
I _guess_ most of these people will be indians, chinese, japanese, a huge group of caucasians
other ethnicities will be a minority and they will keep breeding like rabbits
this will change the face of mankind in the long run >in >100 years after they refine sexrobots to be perfect
but at the same time with the current course of econimics, medical tech, birth rates, space tech ect. most people in those minorities will honestly either be dead or part of some generic future lower middle class where their birth rates will be just as low as everyone else and they'll be able to afford robo waifus just as easily.
>i wonder if quantum/superconducting logic will play a major role in how we program machines.
Not likely, besides we can't program strong ai, it has to come through ANNs, and we're decades and decades away from strong ai on that front.
>talks about robots
>why should I care about feminists who want to make them illegal
>trapped you until they sexual satisfied you
>this could be a problem
>wouldn't there be a conflict
>like what if they trapped you until they sexual satisfied you
>it has to come through ANNs
No it doesn't! End this meme! anns guess a set of output data based on some input using calculus and are hardly ever correct enough to be the basis of a strong AI. It'll just be one of the many different things that go into it.
Can someone in short, non-memetastic sentences explain what this was all about, andwhy it is in any form important to anyone outside of /v/ and a bunch of bitches on gawker or wherever?
It was never important. Some chick allegedly sucked some cocks to get her game noticed by a few review sites. /v/ blew it out of proportion thinking that they could do something do destroy SJWs or whatever the fuck. It backfired in a spectacular way and everyone just supported the chick who was being bullied by internet retards.
Initial event: Female game developer receives rave reviews from Kotaku. Game is actually awful, and she was dating a games journalist from Kotaku. People point out this breach of integrity.
Response event: Said female, and collection of third-wave feminists supporting her, say pointing out this conflict of interest is an invasion of her privacy and is slut shaming, representative of rape culture and the patriarchy in the industry.
Tenfold reaction: People are incensed that someone would try to defend an obvious breach of journalistic integrity by constructing a victim complex; through which anything they do is defensible and even asking questions about their actions is condemnable.
Internet Anonymity: Being anonymous on the internet, people spew hatespeech and idle threats. Other people read idle threats as genuine assault and come whiteknighting.
For now, it's only important in the video game world. But there are no bounds to which these women go by. And with them is an army of white knights that will do anything for them for the slim, highly improbable chance of going on a date with said woman. When in reality, these women are intentionally using them for their will and will immediately discard them or make them feel like shit when they have run their course or do something to defy her.
Man is being emasculated. It's their goal to remove that power. It just has to start somewhere. As long as there is a company out there that doesn't give any fucks about what some slut on the internet has to say, we will eventually get sexbots.
The part where we give up on the whole "humans are equal, every life is precious" pretense, start lobotomizing retards, criminals and other undesirables to harness their brains with computer control. Human body is cheap and relatively good hardware as is, they just need better control logic.
I seriously doubt fuccbots are anywhere near a level where they'd be quality investments. It could be at least 15 years before there is even a product to market, let alone acceptance by people.
>buy female robot waifu

>no periods, bitching, alimony, cheating, lies, or choosing a vibrator/dog/bedpost over you
>sales increase, women uneasy, demand male AI
>men:NOPE, suck it bitch
>small percentage of females revert to lesbians to survive

>society in crisis, hordes of horny naked unemployed women desperate
>laws changed, polygamy allowed
>most men can now take in 2-3 wives on the condition they remain loyal for life
>women gladly sign up, become nothing more than sex slaves for breeding
This is why women fear female AI robots.
They will never see wide adoption for the same reason most single straight guys aren't enjoying boipucci right now. They want a real woman for emotional/social shit. Their egos won't even let them use tools for masturbating.
>buy male robot husbando

Face it, if it wasn't for opening jars of pickles and sperm, men would be useless. We already have ways of converting a female egg into sperm. Now all that's left is getting /fit/
They need to be capable of doing something useful. In the house this means cooking, cleaning, folding clothes, and other 'chores'.
These are tasks that are difficult for robots to do. Operating in an unstructured environment is hard. Hell even getting robots to pick up and manipulate stuff is really fucking hard.
To solve this, we really need better AI. Better batteries and synthetic muscle are useless if said robot can't do anything useful with them.
Unfortunately, we might end up solving these problems with 'cloud robotics'. IE robot sends image to cloud, cloud says can is at xyz and is mountain dew, here is the best way to pick up can, as determined by hundreds of trials from other robots picking up the same type of can.
>this roastie wrote all that due to sheer butthurt over reality
The difference being, in this situation, that men would be more likely to put their hands to action to fix whatever they aren't comfortable with. Women, in general, are much more likely to resort to making drama out of things not going their way, as proven by their behavior over the years.
Stay delusional you soon to be obsolete whore
My entire post was to prove a point. Women would just switch to sexbots too. But unlike men, women don't need men to get them pregnant. Our society would nearly topple, and the m/f ratio would be heavily skewed.
But something like this would probably never happen in our lifetimes. And in all likeliness, something similar from Futurama where Human/Robot relationships are seen as forbidden would happen. Plus, the mass majority is always going to seek a relationship, no matter how dysfunctional, over a robot. There's a humanistic feeling about it that a robot can't replicate. But that doesn't mean the couple won't own a sexbot. It'd just be a more advance sextoy+maid
Are you fucking kidding me?
I've been a kissless virgin all my life, and I'd say about 20% of the people currently on /g/ are as well, not including the fucking 12 year olds. Hasn't hurt my productivity yet.
What's a few more years?
> inb4 "it was all a ruse", or "lol i got u" and it's derivatives

...and how exactly are you going to afford a robot husbando once prostitution is no longer a viable source of income?
Holy shit anon, now she won't show her tits or his bopucci, cause tears now.
...and how exactly are you going to afford a robot waifu living off autismbux and welfare?
> Fat slut
Fucking gross. Jenny is 100% flat.
See >>52866267 and pic related
Nice trips. I secede then.
>"it's a tumblr filename so it invalidates your argument"
I could have literally changed the filename. Besides, I got it off google images. Not that I give a shit because you will use ad hominem as your logic.
I do too, but I think that's borderline illegal. That's crossing the boundaries between fake and real.
> She's a fucking robot, people can modify her however they want.
> people can modify her however they want.

L O L
> >"it's a tumblr filename so it invalidates your argument"
I wasn't even arguing with you.
But I digress.
> I could have literally changed the filename. Besides, I got it off google images. Not that I give a shit because you will use ad hominem as your logic.
Wow. You're a faggot.
> I do too, but I think that's borderline illegal. That's crossing the boundaries between fake and real.
Doesn't matter if it's "borderline illegal", it's still legal, just like how nudist pix are legal.
If you're worried about whether or not alphabet soup will come knocking, then manufacturers will make the bots and make them fully functional as "art pieces" or "science projects" or whatever, bypassing a purported overextension of obscenity in Miller v. California. Then, 3rd parties will create an aftermarket for hardware and software for more nefarious purposes.
If you live in some other freedom-hating country, I feel for you. Chances are you may not get your bots, even if they weren't loli.
This would be a cool project.
Been tried, doesn't work, too expensive:
Are you telling me you want cloud robotics? Cloud robotics is the most botnet thing EVER.
Also, no one in the robotics community cares about robot waifus.
not in the field, I agree, botnet as fuck
>imagine there being a database of now peopel fuck their robot and the best sex moves.
on a small scale for testing and rapid prototyping thougt it would shorten dev time by years.
Sexbots aren't happening until materials science and engineering starts advancing at the speed of computing, you'll just have to live with VR and AR waifus controlling your household devices until then.
