not used to battery life this long

I'm having a bit of a hard time finding a t420 with a 1600 x 900 screen, are these just very uncommon? Also how much should I expect to pay?

If you're constantly running out of useable memory, RAM will be useful.

But a SSD will really speed things up, from boot up to applications, the difference in speed is startling. Not to mention less sound and better battery life.

If I had to choose one, I'd do the SSD. But more RAM is always good too!

Whatever I have, I know I'll have issues with some of the larger games (GTA, Witcher 3, Division beta) but I think it'll run CS:S and others just fine.

I have a battery that discharges way faster than it should and has way off estimates for remaining time. it goes from like 100% to 30% fast, then almost instantly down to 0 without warning and then my thinkpad just shuts off. would resetting it through the power manager or updating the firmware fix this, or should I buy a new battery?

Just picked up an X220 tablet off a guy on craigslist, $80 fucking bucks. I thought for sure it was going to be in shit condition or have a locked BIOS, but everything checks out and was in fantastic conditio - i5, 4GB, IPS, 320GB mechanical drive. My Thinkpad lust has returned after being disgusted for years with my T400's fucked up white spots from its keyboard.

Already got a 2.5" SSD in it. Next up will be 16GB RAM and a mSATA SSD because why the fuck not.

Hi /tpg/, I've never owned a thinkpad before, but I've taken a look at the buyers guide and have narrowed down the choices to the few available in my area.
Does anyone have any advice regarding the picks below?

T410, $220AUD
T430, $375AUD

Need some shopping/decision help please.

So there is some reseller selling a refurb broadwell X! for 600 Eurobucks, which seems quite cheap, especially with an high res toucscreen, 8GB of ram and a 256GB SSD.
The catch: No lenovo warranty left, no WWAN, no OS (but it has a "Windows 8 OEM UEFI Licence", so I could probably legally install W8, should I want to), and some random EU keyboard, so if I'm unlucky, I end up with AZERTY...

I would want to have an T450s, but they are still much more expensive, and the only real benefits are a VGA port (Yeah, I know >2016..., but that could be solved with a dongle), a SD card reader (I like to use them as a 2nd, unmounted partition, to back up important files on a half daily basis, before it goes to the external HDD at the end of the day, but I could probably solve this with a 2nd SSD or "the cloud" + encryption) and battery bridge (but lower battery life to start with).

so it seems like all of it aint really big issues, but there is two things I need to ask of /g/:
Seller says it has a 256 SATA SSD. I thought those only had mPCIe? Error, or am I wrong?

And it also says, WWAN is not upgradeable, yet the service manual for it (its an 20BS, but CTO) says that this module is even a CRU, so what gives? I am on mobile broadband at home, and I would really love to replace my dongle with something internal.

Oh, and it has a touchscreen, so is the reduced brightness and increased thickness noticable?

Can't speak for canada and France, but in the US as a German, I never had issues with credit card acceptance, even though it technically is a debit card. What however often does NOT work, is an EC card, but if you have a Mastercard or Visa, it should work. my backspace key on my x220 is being a big fat gayboy, it works alright if I deliberately press the key to completion but its not nearly as responsive as every other key on the keyboard. It started acting up a couple of days ago. Is it easy enough to remove a single key or do I need to remove the entire keyboard to try and fix it. It probably just needs to be cleaned.

if you're looking for something along the lines of a small netbook then that is fine. If you want to run something other than linux or chrome OS like Windows it will be pretty slow with the 1.5 Ghz CPU. For a little bit more for what you're paying you can get something along the lines of an x200 series. x201 should be about the same price that you're paying with much more options for accessories like larger batteries or for about $200 USD you can pick up something like the x220 which has a better CPU and more battery options.

Just my 2 cents though. Those e series have always been suspect to me as far as their build quality goes as they seem like higher than consumer grade laptops.

I bought an X201 and it's wireless is complete shit. Testing iperf with my local server gets me 1.5 to 2 Mbits/s with its UPGRADED Intel Ultimate-N 6300 AGN. It's original Intel Advanced-N 6200 AGN got even better speeds, but still shit, at 4 to 6 Mbits/s. I'm 100% sure its my ThinkPad at fault somehow, because my Mac mini 2007 with an upgraded wireless N card gets 50 to 70 Mbits/s and its in a different room from the access point. All ThinkPad iperf testing was done in the same room as the access point. Please god, help me, this WiFi is so slow and I can't figure out why. I'm running Ubuntu 14.

Fan bearing is on its way out but will still probably last a long while just chattering away. If you can stand the noise, it won't hurt to leave it be, for now. You can try lubing the fan, but if you're going to go to all the trouble of tearing it down, you might as well just replace it.
