Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm having a bit of a hard time finding a t420 with a 1600 x 900 screen, are these just very uncommon? Also how much should I expect to pay?
>>
>>52692654
>6 hours
>long

>>52692683
Easier & probably cheaper to buy a new 1600x900 panel.
>>
>>52692708
older batteries i've got were lucky to last 2 hours
>>
>>52692654
tlp?
>>
>>52692790
haven't really set it up, since it's a little wonky in fedora.

this is just a sealed battery i bought for my x200. should be better when i do tlp and remove bluetooth.

honestly, if it can last at east 3 hours, that's fine with me.

I just jumped on a T510 and then a battery, charger, and hddsdd caddy with 2.5 rails. How memed am I?
>>
Talked to the lenovo rep at microcenter today about the new thinkpads. He'll be there next month to demo them. Cannot wait to get my hands on the t460s. I'm glad the US is getting discrete graphics this time.
>>
Honestly is the 1600x900 screen on the t420 as bad as people say it is?
Do the screen brand matter that much?
How does the 1080p screen in the t520 compare?
I'm avoiding the IPS mod, I don't trust myself doing something that risky and I don't have the cash for it either.
>>
>>52692973
if I was able to upgrade the screen on a macbook, I think you can upgrade the screen on a thinkpad
just order extra video cables and you will be fine
>>
I have a $500 budget

It will be used for some programming, watching movies, and traveling.

What is the best I could do, model and spec wise?
>>
>>52693156
if only there was a sort of guide you could use anon.
>>
>>52692814
Running Fedora on an X200 here. What do you find wonky about setting up tlp? Documentation was pretty straight-forward.h
>>
>>52693189
the ThinkPad Extended Battery Functions needs tp_smapi or whatever, and can't find that in the repos.
>>
>>52693232
Oh yeah, you'll have to add the linrunner repo for that.
>>
>>52692814
See if your processor is supported in phc. To my knowledge, all C2Ds are. I undervolted the shit out of my T61 and it made a big difference not only in battery life but heat, too.

If you're constantly running out of useable memory, RAM will be useful.

But a SSD will really speed things up, from boot up to applications, the difference in speed is startling. Not to mention less sound and better battery life.

If I had to choose one, I'd do the SSD. But more RAM is always good too!

And I only make $9/hr. As a security guard. Amazing that something that requires you be a legal witness to anything and everything as part of your job description pays such shit.
>>
>>52694928
I was paid that too at starbucks before I had sat on it for so long.
Fucking hated some of my higher ups, had to take shit and be treated like dogshit.

Honestly I got extremely lucky with my craigslist ad, my boss is a COO and he bought a recycling company and had thought about making some more money.

The crazy part was that I was thinking of starting up my own recycling job too, but right now job is slow, boss fired our person who got clients... and she took them back when she went to her other company.
Whats retarded is that we have a sack of shit employee who always doesn't show up or leave early, yet they are afraid to sue him...

Anyways I had eBay experience, I need to get Etsy exp and maybe Amazon as well.
Im thinking about getting into social networking, a coworker of mine made good money.
Like I got hired by a whim, i got really lucky, I fucking died in my interview process, couldn't speak, had sweaty palms, botched it hard lol starbucks made me into a weak kneed pleb :x

Just picked up an X220 tablet off a guy on craigslist, $80 fucking bucks. T430, $375AUD
W510, $350AUD

Need some shopping/decision help please.

So there is some reseller selling a refurb broadwell X! for 600 Eurobucks, which seems quite cheap, especially with an high res toucscreen, 8GB of ram and a 256GB SSD.
The catch: No lenovo warranty left, no WWAN, no OS (but it has a "Windows 8 OEM UEFI Licence", so I could probably legally install W8, should I want to), and some random EU keyboard, so if I'm unlucky, I end up with AZERTY...

I would want to have an T450s, but they are still much more expensive, and the only real benefits are a VGA port (Yeah, I know >2016..., but that could be solved with a dongle), a SD card reader (I like to use them as a 2nd, unmounted partition, to back up important files on a half daily basis, before it goes to the external HDD at the end of the day, but I could probably solve this with a 2nd SSD or "the cloud" + encryption) and battery bridge (but lower battery life to start with).

so it seems like all of it aint really big issues, but there is two things I need to ask of /g/:
Seller says it has a 256 SATA SSD. I thought those only had mPCIe? Error, or am I wrong?

And it also says, WWAN is not upgradeable, yet the service manual for it (its an 20BS, but CTO) says that this module is even a CRU, so what gives? I am on mobile broadband at home, and I would really love to replace my dongle with something internal.

Oh, and it has a touchscreen, so is the reduced brightness and increased thickness noticable?
>>
Hey guys,

Frenchfag here, in a month I'll be in Canada, and I was hoping to use there the EPP discount to buy a T450s (ridiculously cheap compared to France).
But they mention they might refuse foreign credit card other than American Express. Did anyone had a similar experience, and managed to pay with their foreign card ?
>>
>>52700131
>the EPP discount
What's that?
>But they mention they might refuse foreign credit card
Who's they?
Can't speak for canada and France, but in the US as a German, I never had issues with credit card acceptance, even though it technically is a debit card. What however often does NOT work, is an EC card, but if you have a Mastercard or Visa, it should work. But you probably should start a credit card thread here, for more information, and hilarious euro vs. Burger shitflinging.
>>
my backspace key on my x220 is being a big fat gayboy, it works alright if I deliberately press the key to completion but its not nearly as responsive as every other key on the keyboard. It started acting up a couple of days ago. Is it easy enough to remove a single key or do I need to remove the entire keyboard to try and fix it. It probably just needs to be cleaned.
>>
>>52700167
Check OP's post, you get huge discounts (more than the educationnal one) in USA and Canada.

>Who's they ?
It's written on Lenovo's website, but it's a bit unclear, that's why I was wondering if anyone tried before.
>>
>>52700544
Ah, did not know that yet. 30% off of new ones aint bad. Hm, maybe I really should just go for >>52700087, and if that thing sucks, I get the 460s or X1 3rd gen when I am in Canada in Autumn. Tempting!

Just checked their site and yeah, that
>Lenovo offers a variety of payment options for purchases made on Lenovo.com, including:
>
>- VISA, Mastercard, and American Express
>- American Express international credit cards (must ship to US address)
is indeed a bit confusing, but from my experience, VISA is VISA, and Mastercard is Mastercard, so it should work. Only EC, Maestro and stuff like Vpay will most likely not work outside of Europe.

You made a good choice. I'm not sure if the T420 supports an additional ram slot. but you should consider to go from 4gb of memory to 8gb, if there is a free slot. it really depends on what you're doing. if your 're going to launch a VM, there' ll be not much memory left then. but it's still enough

Can I in any away plug an external 4k monitor (that surely may be overkill, but still want to know) on a T420?
Sorry, I don't know much about the needed specs for this to work.

Looking for it as I don't need much more perf (mostly JS "coding", that's my job) but I really could use some screen space when I'm at home.

Been looking for a cheap laptop to run nothing more than:

T430 played League on highest settings with its HD4000 intel chip when I had it.
It got a bit loud but not deadly.
Gonna see how bad it does on the 's' variant running mint.
Didn't game on the X230 when I had it, probably won't be too bad.
X1C3 basically struggled, dunno how Edge versions would play (dont recommend it) or L series.

I think a W520 with 2000m GPU would be a good starting point, any W530 config should be fine i think, dunno benchmarks on the T530's GPU options.

I have a question about the T430. Is it true that you have to replace the wireless card, if you want an mSATA?!?!?! Like fuck, I need WiFi and I already ordered the mSATA.
>>
>>52708421
Scored a T420 that was "no longer booting" for $30. All that was wrong was it had viruses that prevented windows from booting to the desktop.

I spy the t500 on the right corner has IPS, and the tablet, and, umm, the guy behing the butterfly keyboard guy? didn't know 3:4 IPSes exist

Hello Swedish-Anon,

if you're looking for something along the lines of a small netbook then that is fine. If you want to run something other than linux or chrome OS like Windows it will be pretty slow with the 1.5 Ghz CPU. For a little bit more for what you're paying you can get something along the lines of an x200 series. x201 should be about the same price that you're paying with much more options for accessories like larger batteries or for about $200 USD you can pick up something like the x220 which has a better CPU and more battery options.

Just my 2 cents though. Those e series have always been suspect to me as far as their build quality goes as they seem like higher than consumer grade laptops.

Hope this helps!

>>52695639
>>
>>52709009

Thx Anon!

I really feel like this pc is good but if i can get something better for about 200 dollars i think im going to go for that option instead.
>>
just got an x201 for under 120
4 gigs of ram i5 520m and a 250 gig hdd
did I do good?
I'll only be using it as a backup computer and for testing out linux distros that I can't emulate very well
>>
just got an amazing used w520, but the keyboard is swedish, do you guys know where can I get a cheap-ish english one in europe?
>>
>>52709009

Anon, i just realized that the netbooks u linked me costs alot here in sweden. Rip money
>>
turns out the x230 i bought doesnt come with a webcam. how easy is to install one and how cheap?
>>
>>52709439

Ebay time?
>>
>>52707197
the t's and w's posses better quality. but the e is quite cheap.. i just wanted a budget thinkpad with a solid keyboard. becauee every other keyboard from other brands are shit.
>>
>>52707197
e series is like "the new coke" of thinkpads. They thought they did good until everybody dipped their tounges in sweet ass cheap shit.

Go for t420 or x220 (me here) and don't fuck around anything else if you want a thinkpad.
>>
>>52708436

I just can't stand stupidity.
>>
>>52708482

x220 is faster, better grafix, a bit better battery life, can have 2 drives: normal sized 2.5" drive + mSATA drive

x200: better aspect ratio (16:10), more indicator leds, slightly better media keys, slightly lighter weight

I have both, and end up using my x200 way more. It just feels better, idk.
>>
I bought an X201 and it's wireless is complete shit. Testing iperf with my local server gets me 1.5 to 2 Mbits/s with its UPGRADED Intel Ultimate-N 6300 AGN. It's original Intel Advanced-N 6200 AGN got even better speeds, but still shit, at 4 to 6 Mbits/s. I'm 100% sure its my ThinkPad at fault somehow, because my Mac mini 2007 with an upgraded wireless N card gets 50 to 70 Mbits/s and its in a different room from the access point. All ThinkPad iperf testing was done in the same room as the access point. Please god, help me, this WiFi is so slow and I can't figure out why. I'm running Ubuntu 14.
>>
>>52710018
Thanks. I'll go with the x200 then, just want a little lightweight portable shitposting machine. I can stick a small ssd in there and get away with that
>>
>>52706298
maybe the ones without vpro
>>

Yeah, all of those are with hdd, ram, and adapter. I just want to use it for university, so note taking, text editing, and some programming.

>>52709442

I had a X200 and recently got a X230 and the difference in performance is massive. Also battery life is noticeably better.

Your best bet is probably amazon/ebay. I wouldn't risk it getting anything else anyways because many of them won't have the spill proof features in them. At least thats how it was for my x230t.

When it's somewhat quiet, I can sometimes hear my X230's fan rattling a bit. What do?

> tfw thinkpad was said to be delivered but it wasn't

I waited all day outside and the fucker said he delivered it. Bullshit! I'm not sure what to do about it, I just claimed item not delivered on eBay and told the seller about this, I'm pissed.
>>
>>52713544
>not clamshell
>plastic hinges
There are more reasons, but I don't feel like listing them.

Get it if you want, but that's in the price range of the X200 and x230, both of which are still small (but bigger)
>>
>>52713544
forgot to mention, yes, I have some experience with those. The keyboards are also really fucking tiny and uncomfortable to type on

>>52713586
It might have been delivered at the wrong address. Wait a day. Also, you should ask the seller if they shipped to the right address
>>
>>52713653
I asked the seller to change the address so I know he sent it to the right one. Also why would it say delivered if he didn't deliver it? The problem I have is that I got my other parts for the thinkpad the same day but not the thinkpad itself. Shit is messed up!
>>
>>52713687
If he shipped it, instead of drove it to you, HE didn't deliver it, someone else did.
>>
>>52713620
well, im kind of partial to the white Lenovos. Doesn't necessarily have to be this one specifically. Whats a good Thnkpad model in white?
I'm not going to be doing anything really intensive with it.
>>
>>52713699
I was obviously speaking about the FedEx driver.
>>
>>52713728
I mean, you can always just get any ThinkPad and just get like a large white sticker for parts of it. I mean that's basically what's going on with that one, only the lid is white.

Seriously though when I've had to use an x131e I've hated it. The trackpad is bad, as is the keyboard, and the things are just too damn small.

>>52713741
It can say deliver if they delivered to the wrong address.

>>52714085

never look back. look laterally. if you don't end up liking debian, figure it out. there might be another distro that suits your needs. if it's the GUI, there are tons of DE's which can be switched out literally at will.
>>
>>52713169
Fan bearing is on its way out but will still probably last a long while just chattering away. If you can stand the noise, it won't hurt to leave it be, for now. You can try lubing the fan, but if you're going to go to all the trouble of tearing it down, you might as well just replace it.
