Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

This might sound retarded but is there any way to bypass the onboard flashchip that loads boot firmware with an external flash chip??
>>
Is there a release date for the 460s?
>>
>>52676864
Why? you can flash libreboot/coreboot on to certain models if you're a freetard

>>52676892
Probably within the next month
>>
>>52676864
Not trivially. You should go read up on "the stateless laptop". It'll likely amuse you, given your question.
>>
>>52676888
please share since there are about 10,000 chinks on 51nb that would make you their god if you found one
>>
>>52676961
Why? you can flash libreboot/coreboot on to certain models
Yes, I know. I was wondering if you could have libreboot on one flash chip and the original bios on another.
>>52676972
Will look at it now. Don't know too much about the topic.
>>
>>52677021
Probably not without some level of hardware hacking
>>
>>52677032
Interesting. Will do some research and try it if I reach a solution
>>
I'm currently using a t420 and my god, why is the screen such shite? it's too fucking bright
>>
What's the deal with the "trackpad stickers"? Is that really how these things work? The trackpad stays, but you replace the sticker?

I have that not-so-fresh feeling with my current keyboard and trackpad (T420).
>>
>>52677053
it would be way easier just to reflash the chip than try and put a socket in

I'm sure. Was just wondering if there was ever an attempt made at separate flash chips. It doesn't seem ideal but still...

I'm the guy in the last thread who got sent the wrong thinkpad and was waiting for my money to come back. Now it's back, and I can afford to look into getting one again.

I have a couple questions.

Regarding things such as processor. Is an i7 a must?

I compile everything from source, and would prefer not to wait a year when compiling kernel.

It just seems like a full specd T420 with a 1600x900 screen is rare to find.

I'd like to have good battery life, I heard the x series is good for that, but then I also heard that their screens can suffer from ghosting. Also, it seems as though every model with an IPS screen is the tablet version.

Are there not ones with an IPS screen that are not tablets? Or do you have to modify that yourself?

Bonus question.

If I were to go beyond the x220 and the t420 series to 30 or 40, are they decent? Do they have any problems other than the newer keyboards?
>>
>>52677155
Yea that matches up, can you see any problems with it? I don't really know what im meant to be looking for
>>
>>52677225
I'm okay with that, SATA-II speeds on an SSD are still around 200-300mb/s write/read speeds
>>
>>52677227
T440p + 1080p IPS + trackpad mod, you now have the best modern thinkpad

T430 has the shit layout and feel. T440p has a shit layout but the best feel since the T6x.
>>
>>52677227
>compiles everything from source
>worried about battery life
>>
>>52677244

I don't see the screen resolution. It's either 1366x768 or 1600x900. Both are bad TFT screens, but I think 1366x768 would be horrible.

I'm not sure about the processors, but I think that might be the lower one? I thought there was a T420 with a 2540 or something like that. Not that it matters, since the non-S model T420 CPUs can be upgraded.

BTW, my 1600x900 T420 was $159 or so *shipped*.

I wouldn't be compiling everything from source while out and about (not connected to a power supply).

Unless you are implying that the batterys long term health in general will be effected negatively from compiling. That wouldn't be a major issue though, would it? I mean I can imagine it will have an impact on the long term health, but it wouldn't be serious enough to warrant any concern, right?

>>52677299
That sounds pretty nice actually. What do you reckon would be a good price for that in total?
>>
>>52677227
If you have a higher-powered workstation, you could set things up so all the compiling occurs there instead of on the laptop. Lets you not worry over getting a strong CPU that would otherwise be unnecessary.
>>
>>52677547
Unfortunately, I don't. I just have a second hand generic Lenovo laptop with some decentish specs
>>
>>52677592

I got a Tecra M11 for $120. Did I get a good deal?

2.67GHz 2 cores 4 threads i5
4GB 1066MHz DDR3
320GB 7200rpm HDD
14.1" 1600x900 screen
Intel HD Integrated Graphics

Also does anybody know anything about how easy it is to get Linux or OpenBSD running on this laptop? How about VT-d PCI passthrough support? From what I can tell it has a QM57 express mobile chipset. According to Intel that chipset supports VT-d and so does the processor. Does that automatically mean I can do VT-d or does the manufacturer's BIOS have to support it? I can't find any specific information on the Tecra M11's VT-d support.

>>52679017
I guess it matters what kind of design you're doing. Right now I'm designing a set of FIR filters to put on a FPGA using GNU Octave. It's supposed to be pretty close to MATLAB. I can't comment on MATLAB compatibility but I can say it is very easy to learn and has no problem handling about a GB worth of data at a time. There's a 64 bit index option you can compile it with to increase that.

Eagle printed circuit board CAD software runs on Linux as well.

So I'm doing the IPS mod on the T430s. Almost a full teardown, bezel and lid need to be removed.

sorry for the inc. blog post
I have an i5 x220t (wacom) with an ips screen, and it's had slight bleed (proper terminology? patches of discoloration easily noticeable on a black screen) for a while, but I recently noticed a burn-in analogue (if I leave something bright on the screen for a while, it'll be briefly faintly visible). there's also a tiny (~2 mm x 1mm) chip in the glass before the screen which I don't think merits response
it doesn't make the computer unusable, but I'd rather replace it now rather than having it gradually degrade further
my questions are:
>have any of you experienced something like this before/replaced your screens, and how did it go, in either respect?
>is http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/IBM-Lenovo/THINKPAD~X220~TABLET/ reputable/the best value I'll find (and for that matter, will just replacing the screen solve my screen issues, or are they just symptomatic of something else)
>is it more cost-effective to just stalk ebay for another x220t - or just an x220 - given I got this for ~250 and swapping in my hdd, factoring in likelihood of entirely fucking my computer?
>>
>>52680254

That's true of consumer grade junk
thinkpads are designed with repair-ability and life span in mind, and most are ex-corporate machines so they have been used in a clean environment and well maintained

I work at a Business laptop refurb place.

Lately I have been dealing with T410's coming back with fan errors. These were bought from a client who couldn't figure it out. I haven't seen any guides on the wiki but I want to make sure it is said somewhere and I give back to the community in some form.

There is a common fan error that prevents the whole OS from booting. It is worth considering when buying a T410. You open up under the keyboard and unscrew the fan, re-screw it back on. Apparently it is a bug with the screw sending a signal to the board that it is loose. Now is also a good time to also clean out the fan and check that the heatsync is properly seated. Look for signs of deterioration in the heatsync. Put everything back on and you should be set to turn on without a fan error.

Also update your BIOS if you are in a position to do so with your selected OS and bootloader.

>t430

There were some people with a similar problem a few days back and their solution was to take the fan out and clean it. Now there is actually a reason behind why this worked.

>>
>>52681460
If the drivers work and it works on CS5, you know it's an error with CS6, and you can reinstall CS6 to fix it. If not, it might be some kind of hardware issue, but who knows, because Edge thinkpads are filled with cheap components.

I've replaced countless T and X series screens along with a few X tablets, always have ordered and replaced the screen and backlight as one unit, along with the X tablets always have ordered the digitizer and screen as one as well. Best part about this is you don't have to worry about gpu/inverter/anything, as long as it fits it will work. There are also countless interchangeable parts between models for example the screen from a T60 will work all the way up to a T500 I believe as long as they're both widescreen. This is that "frankenpad" shit you hear about.

>is http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/IBM-Lenovo/THINKPAD~X220~TABLET/ reputable/the best value I'll find (and for that matter, will just replacing the screen solve my screen issues, or are they just symptomatic of something else)
I've always used ebay, business I used to work with used laptopscreen.com, never heard any complaints. Make sure it isn't the graphics card, plug into an external monitor and put it under load with benchmark software. And make sure it isn't the inverter, you'll know this if the screen turns on but is incredibly dark, use a flashlight.

>is it more cost-effective to just stalk ebay for another x220t
Most people on ebay are smart enough to know there's value in part of it by looking up other listings that did the same thing. You could get a screen cheaper than on its own by buying one with a dead motherboard, or bios locked board, I've done this before just to loot it for the screen and it was cheaper than buying the screen itself. Of course this relies 100% on someone else selling a broken one and not knowing what the fuck they have but it can happen

C2Ds have fallen in value hard, even if it is the good batch, I stopped reselling C2Ds except locally as facebook machines for cheap alternatives. You will get more attention and more money out of it if you can put a modern windows OS on it for the sale. 7 is still desired by many businesses

Even when I'd use the demo it'd freeze after a few simple actions

I think it's just the hardware or how the drivers work with CS6, at least from what I can tell. It's the only program that does this and causes my computer to crash or restart. I use FL studio a lot cus I'm a pleb and I've had it running for days without anything like that happening so I really don't know what to think. I'll just suck it up and use CS5

I'm trying to run GZDOOM on my t420 (ibtel graphics only) under xubuntu.

Now, these modern sourceports have all sorts of shit for fucking up the textures and blurring sprites (bilinear all the way up to H2QX fuckery), and under Windows I have all that off (except anisotrophic and nearest to mipmap)

I've tried both GZDoom from ppa as well as compiling it natively, but I still get bilinear filtering on enemy sprites and wall textures, even when I have it all disabled.

Is there some xorg shit that I have to do to make sure bilinear texture filtering is off by default?

Also should I be using "tearfree" when I'm already using Compton?

In fact, why doesn't some company make a serious enthusiast's laptop where you buy a base kit at 12", 15", etc. screen sizes, and to upgrade you just buy a new mobo/screen and put it in there? And throw in a service where businesses/consumers can ship their laptop in to get upgraded for a nominal upcharge if they think it's too hard to do themselves.

I'm not using an external GPU, the T420 can come with a dedicated internal card. It's nothing special, an Nvidia NVS 4200m, but it really increases your vidya options compared to the integrated HD 3000. To upgrade yours to a dedicated model you'd have to buy a new motherboard and cooler, which is probably not worth the money compared to an external GPU solution.

I like the design a lot, in fact I think it's brilliant but with that much battery life added I want to know how heavy it feels in your backpack/carry bag. I know the weight, I just want to know your personal experience with it.

W500 or T500? I'm honestly just in need of a computer and I'll save for @ desktop later. Comfy web browsing and screenwriting. Maybe even a t60 for value SBD comfy level? Might watch /TV/ occasionally

will taking out a WAN card when I already have one for wifi significantly effect power use, or should I just leave it in? also, any recommendations for APUs? trying to get the max performance/battery life out of this thing.

I want to buy a dock for my T420 mostly so I can run CAD software. Are there any docks that come with a dedicated graphics card?
>>
is there any more info on the new thinkpads, like specs and such?

I really want an x260, but they probably won't put in the nice i5/i7s with iris graphics.

$380 for an used X230 with 8GB ram, 128GB SSD, docking station and slice battery, has W7 installed, will probably install Lubuntu on it. I'm not in the US, but how does this deal sound? I could get a lower price somewhere else without the accessories.

x230 has both the thinklight and the backlit keyboard, though most configurations only have one.

I have an x230 and love it, but then I'm fine with the new keyboard as long as the layout isn't terribad like the one on that x1

look up any of the "netbook" games lists, you can run any of those. you should be able to run any 2d game. as for modern (ish) games think around HL2/CSGO level.
>>
>>52688457
No docks come with graphics card.
It has been out of commissioned since the T61, and they won't allow powerful graphics for your needs.

if you want to find cheap stuff use generic search terms like "thinkpad" and "x" for say an x-series. and disable filters like ram amount, size, etc. to get more results. sort by cheapest for buy it now or ending soon for auction, and just search through it all. it definitely takes more time but you'll find some stuff that a seller has mislabeled or underdescribed and is selling for cheap out of ignorance, or auctions that no one has looked at so you're like the only bidder. for example I just got a thinkpad that was labeled 2gb ram but it had 4 shown in the BIOS pic, and 4gb when it arrived. most of the mass resellers and recycle places don't investigate each laptop that much, so learn each model and what to look for.

Good thing I swapped the 1400x1050 display into my X60.
>>
>>52689878
think so but I have never done it. if there is a mismatch between pics and the item, or something important missing in the description you can usually argue for a refund. exception being if in the description it explicitly states that the pic is not representative of the product. this is how people can use stock photos and sell things like boxes/manuals and sometimes people think they bought the real item or whatever.

I have a T530 with the HD4000 Ivy Bridge integrated graphics.

After upgrading my memory to 16GB (this improved performance in most games by around 7-10%, since the integrated graphics rely on the system memory), I'm able to play FFXIV (lowest settings) at ~30FPS, Deus Ex (original) with graphics mods at highest resolution and settings at close to 40, Dolphin running SSBM near 30fps, and a bunch of stuff from n64 and psp and older on retroarch at 60fps. I tried running SSBB in dolphin, but I was getting under 10FPS, and it was unplayable.

Since your T420 has a generation older integrated graphics, I wouldn't expect better than this. The jump from HD3000 to HD4000 was a significant one.

For reference, my processor is a i5-3320m, and I'm using an SSD, which will marginally improve performance on disk-IO heavy games like FFXIV.

I must be blind. I only just noticed my T420 came with a WWAN card. I can replace this with a mSATA drive, am I correct? I'll never need to use the wireless network, but I have a lot of uses for a 3rd storage space.

I joined the meme and spent $200 on a T420 (i5 2.5Ghz 1600x900 8GB Ram 320GB), installed Linux Mint on this bitch and it is fucking. glorious.

I have since been taking it to my mediocre, college part-time job to learn web development so that I may get an actual job. Thanks for the suggestions senpai
