You're right that it's a recent problem but not for the reasons you think. In the past it was normal for games made for the PC to run at high framerates. Unfortunately triple A games are all console ports now which usually means an outright 30 FPS cap. If the point of the system is to run games there's no need for it to be made for enterprise desktops firstly. Developers should focus on SteamOS and the end result would be better for everyone except Microsoft. Any newer FX 4-6 core CPU would be more than enough to run it better than a console, if you spend the money on the GPU instead. Or, you buy something like the GTX 950 I suggested and still get a pretty decent intel quad core (an i5-2500k costs you around 120 bucks and it's still a damn good CPU for the price, a 3570 can be bought around 150 and even cheaper used.).

It's 500€ and they even give you a legit copy of windows 7. Sure the CPU is dated as fuck, but this is a prebuilt and I'm sure you can get this stuff cheaper and save up a little bit here and there. Still as it stands, it runs a 960, which would already put it way above anything a PS4 could pull out performance wise.

You shouldn't be playing games past 16 like the other anons have said- and secondly you are implying that we all agree that consoles are the implicit choice we should be making.

Here is the facts:
-if you are on budget and are well aware that you do not need misc games or MMO's go console so you can play your mainstream FPS that needs crazy power
-if you want high FPS and have the money to invest then spend it on a PC and get it the way you want.
-Console is locked for FPS. It diminishes over time and lags near end of life as devs try to stretch the power of the oldest model of that same console. IE xbone rev1, rev2 has two extra cores in a few years time. The original argument for universality is now gone.
-PC's can exceed base frame-rate and also be upgraded.
-it is a 'at time of investment choice' and should also be considered in social conventions rather than tech. IE all my friends at 14 had xbox 360s and it was more fun to play with them on that console as a social gathering than play WoW with strangers in a guild on a desktop.
