Why can't all programs run on more than a single cpu thread?

I have a ton of programs that only max out a single cpu thread on my i5-2500k. It bugs me that all the other cpu threads stay idle. Those lazy niggers could be working.

It's not the easiest thing to implement, in order to do it right they have to set it up so that all cores "line up" (made that up on the spot but you can google concurrency) so-as to not create problems issues with like, shit not syncing up right because like, one core finished things while another got stuck or something.

How do I get rid of tearing on linux? AFAICT everything's set up right in xorg.conf. I've got a GTX 970 running 352 drivers running Manjaro. Here's my xorg.conf:

Not sure if related, setting CoolBits to 12 or any value is doing absolutely nothing, either.
>>
>>52664289
a lot of problems are inherently serial, not parallel. Simple example, say the following occurs in the code:
x = getValue();
y = doSomething(x);

The computer can't go calculate y until it's done calculating x. The operations to get x have to happen first and theres no way around it, even if you have other cores available that could be working on calculating y. This is a bit of a contrived example, but the same thing crops up all over.

There's also the fact that parallel programming is just plain hard. When two threads try to access the same thing at the same time it's easy for them to step on each others' toes and leave the object in an inconsistent state. The solution is usually locking, enforcing that only one of them has control at a time. But this means that for that operation you're doing no better than a single thread, so you have to find ways of minimizing it. And you still have to handle communicating between threads and dividing up work among them.

I play video games on the left, and listen to very long youtube videos on my right screen. Like podcasts, or old radio shows etc etc.

Is there any way to control youtube while in game?

Since I listen to spoken word, it can trample over what I need to read or hear something in game. Its awful pausing the game, alt tabbing out, pausing, listening to the game for 20 seconds, alt tabbing again to turn it back on etc etc.

Any ideas?

I'm looking for a monitor that I can hook both my PC and my PS4 to. Would I be better off looking for a monitor with 2 HDMI inputs of some sort of adapter?
>>
>>52665280
If you have a device on which is installed Steam connected to the TV, you can stream games from another device with Steam. I can't vouch for how well it works, and it sounds like maybe it's not the solution you're looking for.
>>
>>52665363
Your best bet is probably a monitor which has both DisplayPort/DVI and HDMI input. The former depends on what your GPU supports.
>>
>>52665363
Its not a big deal at all.
Most monitors have HDMI and DVI inputs now.

If you are using hdmi from your PC?
Most video cards have DVI, so you could probably get a DVI cable to hook to your monitor while leaving the HDMI open.

If you HAVE to use HDMI on your PC, then just buy an HDMI to DVI adapter. Plug the adapter into the back of the monitor and plug your HDMI into it.

The adapters are cheap and easy to find, a lot of video cards and motherboards just throw them into their boxes so you may even have one laying around.

I've got my eye on a couple of monitors, one IPS, and one 144hz and I'm not sure which to splash out on.

If you play any video games at all, 144hz is going to be more important than the gamut and viewing angles of an IPS panel.
>>

>>
>>52665455
>Another quick question, is the difference between 60 and 144hz very noticeable?
Yes. Both the jumps from 1920x1080 -> 2560x1440 and 60Hz -> 120/144Hz make a noticeable difference.

>I've got my eye on a couple of monitors, one IPS, and one 144hz and I'm not sure which to splash out on.
Not sure what you mean by this comparison. The 144 Hz one is a TN panel? TN is a fine compromise if you don't care about viewing angles.

What GPU do you have?
>>
Is IPS much harder on eyes nowdays than TN? 60Hz both. If i'm not going to 100+Hz is there any reason to get TN?

I'm building a system in a few days, currently have no OS for it, but don't want Win10 because I am used to Win7.

You can upgrade from windows 7 with daz loader, dunno what could cause that problem.

Once you upgrade from it, you'll obtain a legitimate license pretty much. So there won't be a need for any loader or crack if you do a fresh windows 10 install some time in the future.

Pirated windows 7, works relatively fast, probably could be better optimised. Doesnt crash alot (once a month maybe).
But the problem I have is when I turn on the pc (after not using it for a while) it mostly always blue screens.
I am assuming its because SSD loads too fast and other parts lag behind, but I really dont know.

I've asked this already in a couple other stupid question threads, but I haven't really gotten answers. I applied clipper oil to a GPU fan, intending to decrease the noise, but now it's actually noisier/grindier than it was before. Not sure what I did wrong, but in hindsight, I don't think the fan needed lubricant anyway. It was just running at an unnecessarily high speed due to poorly applied thermal paste. Could I have used too much oil, causing the fan to drag? Or could it have dried out somehow? Is there anything I can do to fix it now?
>>
>>52667461
Sounds like in the process of oiling it, a small bit of dust / grit got into it, making the grinding noise. Try wiping it with a lint-free cloth / microfibre cloth to clean it, then using compressed air if possible to flush the grit out.
Try running it after that to see if you get the noise. If not, great. If so, try re-lubeing it.

We have two network multifunction printers/fax/scanners in our office, same model, and the vendor just came out and "rotated" them (switched their locations) since one of them gets way heavier use than the other.

What's the best way to update the printers so that I don't have to manually add printers to 30 workstations? In theory I think I should be able to:

Printer A - IP xxx.xxx.x.20
Printer B - IP xxx.xxx.x.21

Just change the settings to where I rename Printer A to Printer B and vice versa, and swap their IPs, and that should work, and I shouldn't need to update any workstations (since if User prints to Printer A, it should be looking for a device at xxx.xxx.x.20 named Printer A, right)?

Will this work, or am I missing something?

I know anyone can just claim to be the original author and change the license as they please, I want to prevent this, the software also contains some graphics that probably would be released under cc in normal circumstance, but I've no idea how anonymous works actually work. Any suggestions?

Okay then, if you know your raid settings, can you use the same settings on a different board and get the Raid array to work?

I have a backup drive and plan on upgrading my entire rig soon, but it's still nice to know these things so I don't wipe my Raid array if it's avoidable.

No. You cannot import the raid. You have to move your data, break and recreate the raid.

I'm having motherboard issues (I think), the onboard sound isn't working anymore and an older X-fi card that I've put in there just shat itself all within the same month. I'm planning on replacing the motherboard sometime this year and upgrade to an 1151, which entails upgrading the cpu ram etc. I'm wondering (don't know much about audio), what would be a better temporary(preferably long term) solution, getting a DAC or another cheapo sound card that could die? Am I correct in understanding that a DAC by itself doesn't do surround, but a DAC with an input from a surround-sound capable card would handle it fine?

Partial torrents probably. Edge parts of the files was in chunks that simultaneously contained parts of other files which was not saved as files. uTorrent keeps those parts in files like ~uTorrentPartFile_12345678.dat . IIRC even if you move those too uTorrent will not use them. That means that is will redownload missing parts.

I dunno how packman did it but I'd use sprites for all the different corners and determine what situation it's in and pick the sprite based on that like:
X, X,0
0, 0,0

For every index in the array I'd check the surrounding 8 squares. If they're in the configuration that we have at index 4 (middle square) I'd pick the bottomRight sprite as the sprite I render. Index 2 would be edgeRight or something. You will figure out all the combinations when you write it out.

Does anyone know of a way to download the full size image from Cfake? If you click on a picture, the default size is small, but for pictures that have a higher res available, they have a "switch size" button /icon in the top right, next to the close icon.

Here's where it gets beyond my experience and don't know how to proceed. The URL's of the small size image, and the larger size image are the exact same. Even if you copy the fullres URL and paste in a browser, you still have to click the "switch size" button.

The only difference I have found, is that if you inspect element, there's a line that's a little different.
The line for the small res is--- <img id="content_img" border="0" src="photos/145361173001ee884e_cfake.jpg">

and the one for the larger res is--- <img id="content_img" border="0" src="ophotos/145361173001ee884e_cfake.jpg">

That works. Now is there an easier way to grab that url, instead of going to inspect element every time?
Like is there a way to grab all the URLs of the images, then "cut off" whatever is before the show= and after the picture Id.jpg?

With stuff like BCFakes, I can grab one URL, then go into excel and then just grab it and expand it down, so EXAMPLEOFCELEB1 becoes EXAMPLEOFCELEB2, and etc, and then just use concatenate to add the .jpg at the end, and feed the entire list to IamgeGrabber.

If I download the images though BulkImageDownloader, it saves the small res. However, the filename is the url, and then all I have to do is plug the filename in the address bar after http://cfake.com/ophotos/.

Is there a way to turn all filenames of pictures into a text file, or an excel spreadsheet?
>>
>>52675014
You can write a very simple Greasemonkey script to do "fix" the url. I'm on my phone right now so maybe someone else might write it for you. You don't seem like a Javascript guy, no offense.

I have a question about RAM clock speed in relation to the CPU.

I'm running an i-7 2700k (Sandy Bridge) which claims is only supports up to 1133mhz clock speed.

I've been using a set of 2133mhz RAM in dual channel forever. Both speccy and CPU z report my speeds running at 1066 which after researching, everyone seems to agree that display is correct and you need to multiply 1066x2 (for the dual channel) to get your full clock speed.

Lately, a buddy of mine has been claiming that since my processor only supports 1133, and that my CPU-Z output is showing 1066, I'm losing roughly half my RAM speed to CPU bottleneck.

Can anyone explain which of us is correct and why?
>>
>>52675148
Just ask that programmer friend you have nicely, he'll do it in a minute.
>>52675121
Yeah probably. That said you can buy a cheap license for $40 or $30 if you want. You probably don't need windows ultimate.
>>
>>52675198
What does your bios say your ram speed is?
>>
>>52665095
Steam machine launches Steam from your PC into Big Picture mode. From that, you can minimize Big Picture and have full access to your desktop.

I haven't tried running non-Steam games (though I don't see why they wouldn't work) but Killing Floor 2 runs fine and I'm able to watch HD video with what appears to be proper 5.1 support without an issue.

Just make sure you're hard wired
>>
>>52675259

If you're up the the challenge of writing something that can help me, I'd be extremely grateful.
>>
>>52675302
BIOS says 2133mhz and when I brought that up, friend said that's what's available, not what the OS has access to.
>>
>>52675336
Well maybe you should benchmark your ram.

Here's a weird one.

Sometimes, when I haphazardly toss my keyboard to the side (it's a Logitech K400r I use on the couch), my display's brightness and contrast go up. Some key is probably pressed. Dunno.

Here's the thing - I can't figure out where the hell this configuration is. Nvidia Control Panel can NOT correct the issue further - the sliders are pushed all the way to 0 for Brightness and Contrast.

In the Windows 7 Display Calibration, the Gamma has to be pushed all the way down to make the center dot disappear (speaking of, why there aren't just damn sliders for this in Win7 is beyond me). The Brightness and Contrast in the next screens can't be tweaked without adjusting the monitor itself - which is a TV we use for normal cable programming so I can't just go nuts and change that stuff.

I can not figure out how this shit is getting changed, and where the settings are so I can fix it. I can just trash all my display stuff and reinstall, but it seems like it's a better idea to figure out what's causing it so I can fix it next time.
>>

So I've been asking a series of stupid questions as I fully install a new MOBO for the first time and I think I'm almost there

I got the mobo installed, got windows installed but since I did a clean sweep when I installed windows (7) I can't connect to my modem and get internet access for auto updates to take over and install all the rest of the drivers.
I get the message "Windows cannot find drivers for network adapter" when running the auto fix; now I know I need the right drivers, but my real question is which ones? DO I need the motherboard drivers in order for it to read the network adapter or do I need drivers for the actual modem? I'm currently going through the mobo drivers on it's site and copying them to a flash drive but I don't know if they will fix the problem

Ok I've already done some googling and have gotten mixed answers.

I have built a new pc with a i5 6500 combined with a z170 board.

My question is now that non k processors can be OC via bclk, is it worth exploring that option? Are there decent performance gains to be had? And if so what is the procedure to correctly up the bclk and manage the memory multiplier?

Super big thanks for any answers or insights.
