The key words you used were "good programmer", an actual good programmer will have no trouble whatsoever finding a job. Its just there's a lot of people who haven't really done fuckall that call themselves "good programmers". You basically need a portfolio to get a job without a degree that isnt just basically data entry

if you already have one, then getting a promotion or some shit isn't any different than someone who went to college
but college can help you get one, just don't get too much education before experience
