Would pic related work with an HDMI to DVI adapter? I'm looking at a really nice projector that only has one DVI input, and most of my electronics only have an HDMI input.

Better, but if you are getting an 1150 mobo, at least get the i7 haswell, otherwise just get skylake, at least you'll get HEVC hardware decoding support

The R4/R5 are good cases, there's just not really a reason to buy such a big ass case if you are installing a uATX mobo and a single SSD

Found a wired Xbox 360 controller on Ebay for 10€

Questions:
- It is not marked as "for PC", do I need an adapter to usb? Will I have other problems like incompatible drivers for non-"for PC"?
- "left LB sometimes stuck" - is this easily fixable?

Otherwise looks like it is in great condition

Im trying to find a good computer monitor that can play console games well, such as the ps3 and maybe 4 if I decide to buy one. The reason why would prefer a monitor over a small tv is because I am also looking into building a pc in the future, so it could come in handy.

So ive been doing research, and I think I have come to the conclusion that I need a monitor that does 60Hz and probably IPS, as those seem to handle colors the best. I dont play fps games so higher refresh rates probably wouldnt matter for me.

Do you guys have any recommended go-to brands? Normally I would turn to Asus but all of their reviews are describing how horrible their customer service and replacement program is, like with this particular monitor:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236153&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-LogicalIncrements.com%20Inc-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10440897&PID=5961731&SID=0

So what would you guys recommend for my situation? Are Ben Q monitors any good? Acer? Maybe Asus? My budget is small, $250 is probably my max.

Set your connected peers and bandwidth properly to your connection
>>
>>52642228
1. It'll work
2.depends. sometimes the reason they get stuck is dirt and shit that you can clean, sometimes it's a board problem
>>
>>52642228

Anyone have any recommendations when it comes to 1440p IPS ultra-wide curved monitors?
>>
>>52642254
IPS:Dont bother with it, to many issues
ASUS:Ive had the same 2 asus monitors the past 5 years and never had a problem with them
>>
>>52642240
>It does little more then have better compression

no shit

>No one is using it or will use it till it heavily outways 264

Sceners are already releasing in it. It's true that the compression ratio is not much better than 264 at this point but any bandwidth that is saved is like gold to any streaming company so I expect adoption won't be too far off. I just don't think it's a good idea to drop $1K on a machine that can't hardware encode/decode the next major codec
>>
Is the Evo enough to cool this beast? I don't intend to OC it right out of the gate.
>>
>>52642282
>>IPS:Dont bother with it, to many issues

This is probably why that particular monitor had so many bad reviews. Asus seems to be hit or miss these days.

What do you think of this monitor?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-LogicalIncrements.com%20Inc-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10440897&PID=5961731&SID=0

The only immediate downside I see are that it runs 144Hz and consoles are 60Hz.

>>
>>52642282
>Dont bother with it, to many issues
If by many, you mean one. Backlight bleeding is easily fixed by applying light pressure to the screen or tightening the back screws. Worst case, return it. Almost all of them are 5ms and below now too.

>>52642254
I STRONGLY recommend this guy

I want to send a GET request and operate on that data without having to run a server. Is this possible?

I was thinking of using PHP or Javascript to send this request but is that possible without running a server? I know that I can use the below in Python to get what I need without running a server:

response = urllib2.urlopen(urllib2.Request("URL", headers={"Key": "Value"}))

That one looks pretty neat. kind of large though. Do you have first hand experience with it?
>>
>>52642326
It looks fine to me from stats and reviews.
It doesnt only support 144 but 120 and 60 as well
so a console connecting will pick up on it and change it accordingly
>>
>>52642494
I've had it for a year, needed a little but of calibration after unboxing, but otherwise it's been perfect. The plastic border outside the panel is about an inch thick, so yeah it's pretty big.
>>52642489
Open up an all back screen/image for maximum clarity in a dark room. Notice the strongest points of bleeding and apply light pressure with your finger directly to the panel.

Oh ok, that's what I figured but I couldnt tell. I will keep this one in mind. I am slightly worried about the tn panel, but if I can tilt it downwards and upwards then it shouldnt be a big deal (seeing that I change my seating position constantly.)

>>52642582

Unless you want to compile it your self out side of your package manager(not ideal) or install the binary your self(again not ideal)
Youll have to wait for ubuntu to test and package it against ubuntu.
You are on a long term stability os, you might not get software for years until its been tested.

The best you can do is see if there are third party repo's and see if its in there.
Or learn how to build a package in ubuntu.

Would /g/ say the 90 dollar price jump is justifiable to go from 5th gen i5 gpu/cpu to 6th gen and display port to thunderbolt 3?
I want this to last me for 4 or so years.
And what's up with that battery life difference? I'm assuming it's just a hiccup on Microsoft's part.

Well in case anyone was wondering, an initramfs is an in-memory file system used to mount root. It's used to make sure your init system has everything it needs for booting, like encryption tools if you have encrypted partitions. Since kernel 2.6, an initramfs is always used, so that answers the part about getting rid of it

Okay I need help I've been stressing over this for a week now trying to figure it out.

I have a i5-2400, 1gb HD 7770, 8gb RAM, corsair 750W psu. The mobo is some foxconn h67 shit (i think its some cheap shit)

This rig was working FINE no issues, but I bought a better GPU, a r9 380 saphire edition.

I simply replaced my old one with it - no signal. Tried everything, uninstalling old drivers, disabling integrated graphics, installing new drivers first..
The fans spin (not as fast as the single spin of my old GPU though) but no signal.

The GPU is plugged in properly including the two 6pins from PSU, ive checked this a million times.

I'm out of ideas and kind of rage bought a different motherboard since my instincts told me that was it. It's arriving tomorrow, if it still doesnt work what do I try then???

I have tried two PSU's and bought the corsair one to make sure it wasnt the PSU. im out of ideas, it has to be the mobo right?

I recently rebuilt my kernel on FreeBSD 10.2 to add IPSec support. I also have a bunch of jails that are running that I'm managing with ezjail. I have yet to actually install the new kernel and do a reboot.

My question is in two parts:

1. Do I need to update my basejail and use mergemaster on all the subsequent jails for my current jails to work after the move to the new kernel?

2. If I do, should I use the process outlined here (https://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/jails-ezjail.html) to go about doing it?

>>
>>52647064
It's likely a coil -- routers don't contain speakers, and coil noise is not uncommon. The sort of coil noise I'm used to is a very high pitched whine that warbles in frequency as power use varies.

For example my current laptop has an SSD and runs cool enough that the fan is usually off, so it produces no sound apart from this weird high pitch noise. I have to be someplace silent to hear it, but when I do it's annoying. It'll chirp and warble right at the top of my hearing range when I do things like move the mouse around or if the CPU does something.

>>52647203
You have to trick them into a DCC session. They'll connect directly to you (or vise versa), revealing their IP. Of course it also reveals your IP to them.

Apart from that you could try to crack whatever hash the IRCd you're on uses to munge hostnames/IPs. Or become an ircop since they can see IPs.

Drop to a boot prompt in GRUB and experiment with different devices in there. Its tab completion can be quite educational, and it's way quicker and easier than experimenting with the commands in the config, failing, and rebooting into Linux to try again.

Also, make sure your Windows install is actually bootable how you have it set up. I seem to recall Windows needing to have at least its System Reserved partition on the first HDD.

You might be able to get around this by remapping the drives in GRUB.

i'd say getting os-prober working would be a better solution
that way if he does add more systems or move the windows hdd or w/e, just updating the grub config normally (grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg) will pick up any changes

windows does need to be functional, but it doesn't need to be on the first hdd or partition
it's the windows bootloader that os-prober looks for and that grub loads

Yes, getting os-prober working right is preferable, but right now it doesn't look like it's happening. I do suspect that's because his Windows is not actually bootable.

Great. So your Windows was not actually bootable, and now it is.

You should try with update-grub / grub-mkconfig now and see if os-prober will pick it up. That way you're not stuck with a GRUB config you can't auto update.

>>
>>52647728
Not sure if it exists on _merge_ level, but you can _commit_ piecemeal - see adding to staging by hunks:
http://stackoverflow.com/a/1085191/118520

Once you've selected parts that you want, you can commit them and then merge that commit to master.
>>
>>52647763
>>52647689 again
To expand a little because I'm about to go to bed:
Since it's pirated, you won't have any activation issues.

Check whether the old mobo was in IDE SATA mode and the new one is in AHCI mode, or vise versa.

SATA IDE to AHCI: Set the new mobo to the same setting the old one used, boot Windows, and do this (assuming old mode is IDE): http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/987378-how-to-switch-from-ide-to-ahci-without-repairingreinstalling-windows/
Now you can reboot and put the BIOS back in AHCI mode and Windows will install the right drivers.

Did you try letting repair manager do its thing? It's not likely but it MIGHT work.

Failing that, I guess reinstall.

Buy a Fury or a Nano instead of that soon-to-be-gimped 980.
They'll cut the price soon, and one year from now they will probably perform 30% better than the 980.
Except for the gpu it's a good conf, but where is ram?

If you're on a 32 bit OS you won't be able to use more than 4GB.
There's also the argument of symmetrical dual-channel mode being better for some applications, and as far as I know this needs the sticks to be of the same size and speed.

Most games aren't that CPU intensive, you should be fine, as long as you have a decent graphics card.

You can always get a better heatsink and overclock it, if you find your cpu maxing out when playing gaymes.

>>52648843
>If you're on a 32 bit OS you won't be able to use more than 4GB.
any 32bit Pentium (1) Pro and up supports PAE, which expands the address space to 36bits, allowing for 64G ram, programs can only use up to 4G individually, but that won't matter, since naturally there's no 32bit programs that will try
the only reason people never mention this is because of windows, consumer versions don't allow PAE
use linux or windows server 2003

Is it a bad idea to lubricate a GPU fan with light oil (clipper, sewing machine, etc)? I've seen plenty of conflicting information about this. Some people say that it's helpful, while others say that it actually corrodes the fan bearings and will cause it to break down prematurely.

Left of the pic is front of case.
Blue box is a 240mm radiator and fans
Grey boxes are 140mm fans, 3 total.

I was thinking that the top one had better airflow, but the bottom one was better for dust, because of positive pressure. Am i right?

if you want to increase sda4 you have to move sda5 and sda7 are far right
to increase sda5 you also have to move sda7 right of the unallocated space

if you were using mbr there was a chance of fucking up since altering the order could have possible make boot impossible

nevertheless consider using a live distro with gparted so if anything goes wrong to easily change boot config

Is there any difference between an 'external' SSD and one you'd connect directly to your mobo?

I want to get one to install my OS on, but all my USB ports are 2.0, so it feels like keeping it external would be a waste (other than having an entire OS stuck on 2.0 transfter rates).

Do I just buy whatever SSD I like? Can I just fit pretty much whatever SSD I like on my MOBO?
>>
>>52641688

So I've got ubuntu, first linux os installed, how do I do things like change the launchbar color or move the statusbar>?

Do I have to install a different desktop environment or another program?
>>
>>52649518
If you just have stock ubuntu, with the unity desktop environment, you're doing it wrong.
I recommend that you go straight for installing XFCE, the desktop environment. It's very customizable, modular, lightweight *and* newbie friendly.
The easiest way to get XFCE and ubuntu is just to install Xubuntu, which is exactly that. Far less hassle than putting xfce onto stock ubuntu (assuming you have put no effort into stock ubuntu yet).
>>
>>52649514
>difference
speed
>whatever SSD
most SSDs connects with SATA; the same interface used by HDDs, so yes
(I suppose you speaking of desktop; else also pay attention to what size will be)
>>
>>52649514
Don't do this. Running an OS from usb 2.0 is slow and painful. You wouldn't even be able to get the full speed of a traditional HDD.
>>
>>52649580
>>52649588

So I should get any SATA-connectible SSD, got it.
My MOBO has like 6 SATA ports, but I've rad on some indian tutorial video somewhere that the MOBO can only handle 1 main drive at a time.
Is that bullshit?

As far as the installation goes, I just connect power and SATA, and the MOBO is going to install the SSD on its own, right?
>>
>>52649571

so quicker to download a new os (xubuntu) than sudo apt-get install xfce4

or does it not work like that?
>>
>>52649518
if you want a lot of customization then yes you need another DE
if you need a few changes then
sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool

probably that will have the options you want
>>
>>52649254
There is no such example.
If you have only one stick of ram you can add another identical and increase both capacity and performance, if you add a different stick (but AFAIK they must have the same timings, e.g. CL11) only capacity will be increased.

Is there a media player that allows me to open up multiple webm, GIF and picture files and put them in like a gridded layout inside a single application?
