Who /powerpc/ here?
>>
>>52640510
Still got a couple around the place... media servers, mainly. Streaming iTunes.
And some laptops.
>>
a performa 6360 and a shitty G4 400mhz but 1GB of ram
>>
>>52640510
>PowerPC
>PowerPerformanceComputing

Most retarded name for anything ever
>>
PowerPC rigs were all shit, even high end ones like G5 rigs
>>
>>52641027
Meanwhile back here in reality PPC rigs were much faster than x86 rigs clock for clock. A 500MHz G4 can almost match a 933MHz P3.
>>
>>52641027
What's with all the tripfags on /g/ recently?
>>
>>52641150
>Meanwhile back here in reality PPC rigs were much faster than x86 rigs clock for clock
For what tasks?
The modern web is still browsable on a 500MHz PIII on XP, meanwhile my G4 1.5GHz with Tiger overheats while taking 5x longer to load any page even on "Better Performance" mode.
Tenfourfox on G4 12".
Firefox on a ThinkPad 390X.

Adobe Photoshop was more efficient on PPC back in the day, but as soon as Apple switched to Intel, Adobe CS suite ran much quicker on Windows.
>>
>>52641487
This, my PII Thinkpad 600E can still use the modern web. I think even a dual core 1.8 GHz PPC would struggle
>>
>>52640510
The PowerPC G5, For people who thought the Pentium 4 wasn't hot enough
>>
>>52641487
>For what tasks?
Generally, everything.

>500MHz PIII on XP
>still browsable
Nigger what are you smoking? My Athlon 64 rig has issues with modern websites running Firefox.

>meanwhile my G4 1.5GHz with Tiger overheats while taking 5x longer to load any page even on "Better Performance" mode.
Tenfourfox on G4 12".

Did you download the right version? There's two different versions for G4 CPUs
>>
>>52641487

I have a 2.5ghz dual G5 tower and a 1ghz G4 TiBook just for playing around with and running old apps and code.

I can confirm these claims are bullshit.

Naturally a modern machine is faster, but the web is perfectly usable on either of those old Macs.

I have a few even older Macs, the next fastest being a 233mhz G3, but the web's not usable now once you drop that low.
>>
I wanted to buy a Meme PowerPC machine like the EFIKA ppc or a cheap POWER thing from HP/IBM for RISC assembly fun but is it worth it? anyone got one?
>>
>>52641955
I got my powerbook for $55, try looking around eBay, you'll likely have to settle for something from Apple.
>>
>>52641685
>but it's hot
Thankfully we're talking about performance compared to x86 CPUs of the same vintage.
Are you too poor to afford air conditioning anon?
>>
>>52641973
thanks for the suggestion, seems like freescale and some other chink companies have cheap options available too.
>>
>>52642099
If you're looking for something other than PowerPC, MIPS based SGI O2 boxes can be had for around ~$200-300 depending on what is included and old Sun servers are SPARC based.
>>
>>52642144
That's also good, I was looking for some old Non-Intel Non-AMD machines to play with and build my own silly little OS's with different features (SGI octane had a very powerful graphics unit for ex) I love how widespread openboot and openfirmware is in those architectures, fuck ARM and Intel.
>>
>>52640510
Mah nigga. I've got a dp PowerMac G5 as my main server, a PowerBook G4 that was my dd up until a few months ago, and an eMac that I use as a bedside computer. I've got plenty more PowerPC machines, these are just the current in use ones.

>>52641021
Power in PowerPC stands for POWER, not the word power
>>
>>52640510
>the default eye-penetrating colors instead of Tomorrow master race

why anon. WHY
>>
>>52642277
OpenFirmware in PPC Apple computers is fairly gimped and doesn't comply with a lot of standards.

If you don't really care about performance and just want to learn MIPS assembly or make small applications, an SGI Indy can be had for $50-100 depending on the specs.
They're old but built like tanks.
Plus nekochan has a lot of cool shit, but honestly go for an O2 or even an Octane.
Anything faster isn't worth it and gets into collectorfag prices.
Keep in mind SGI boxes love proprietary connectors, thankfully the O2 uses a standard VGA port.

If you're really desperate you could use an emulator like qemu to play around with RISC architectures but I wouldn't use it to make an OS to run on actual hardware.

Old RISC hardware is fun as fuck to learn about, I had the chance to play Quake 3 on an SGI O2 a few years back and that's where my curiosity of other architectures started.
>>
>>52642421
>>52642277
And if you're looking for something newer or smaller there are two MIPS SBCs at the moment, the CI20 and CI40
>>
>>52640510
Been dailying a PowerBook G3/333 lately, pretty fucking nice. Almost want to get myself a nice G3/400 to match my top-end Power Mac G4/500.

Also got a bunch of other PPC shit but I don't use it that often.

>>52641487
>>52641567
PPC OS X aged like total shit for whatever reason, my aforementioned shitboxes perform about as good or maybe better than contemporary x86 hardware in OS 9 with Classilla. Apple was also slow as fuck to adopt newer standards mostly on the low-end, PC133 SDRAM in a system from 2002 is suffering.

but what fucking universe do you live in where a 600E is usable on the "modern" web? I used a 600E as my primary DD for 4 years and it was painful even in 2003. It's okay for maybe a text/shitposting-based use case but on what you would consider a "modern" (JS-laden and bloated as fuck) site, good luck.

>>52642277
Go for some Sun shit then, can score UltraSPARC T servers for next to nothing (around $100), or if you want something slower but quiet and more workstation-y you can grab a 650 MHz Blade 150 and kit it with an XVR-500 for about the same price. Slow on the web but with Solaris 10 10/09 (which includes StarOffice) and the RAM maxed out to 2 GB they make A-OK servers and dev boxes.

What are you talking about? Tiger and Leopard are both still great.
>>
>>52642358
I think he meant Power"PC" for Macs.
>>
>>52642620
That's what PowerPC for Macs stands for. PowerPC was created for Macs.
>>
>>52642597
They are, but I mean in regards to the web mostly, I just have a hard time believing it's solely a hardware issue when Willamette/Northwood Pentium 4 systems have no trouble doing the same tasks.
>>
>>52642457
>MIPS SBCs
Fucking neat, I knew those existed but could never be arsed enough to look for them. You're my favorite anon today.
>>
>>52642709
It's software, and the proper software still exists. Web browsing is a non-issue even on my 1.5GHz G4 with 1.25GB RAM once you use TenFourFox with NoScript
>>
>>52642743
No problem anon
>>
>>52642807
Good to hear, my iMac G4/800 was slower than shit but I blamed that on PC133 SDRAM, maybe I'll have to take my G5 out again and give it a go.
>>
>>52642942
Your G5 is definitely Internet worthy, the only reason I don't use a PowerMac as a daily driver anymore is because I can't run Opera 12.16
>>
>>52641395
What's wrong with tripcodes?
>>
>>52642579
literally who are any of these niggers except anusif
>>
>>52643007
I remember it being great last time I used it regularly in 2010. It's a PCIe model too, though the low end 2 GHz model. One of these days I'll have to get a 2.3 or a 2.5 quad.
>>
>>52643057
I've got a dp 2GHz single core model upgraded to dual core CPUs, the northbridge doesn't support the second cores but it's a die shrink and runs 10-15ÂșC cooler now
>>
>>52640510
Why are you using Camino?
>>
>>52644448
Probably because it's faster than TFF
>>
>>52641395
I like to be able to see my own posts when I scroll through a thread. I have almost no memory, so this makes it easy to know what I did and didn't say.
>>
>>52644480
Since when?
>>
>>52644492
Purely anecdotal, but TFF always ran way slower than Camino on my G4, can't remember what the reasoning was.
>>
>>52644533
Even so Camino's been dead for three years, not to mention that TenFourFox has been working on AltiVec optimization
>>
>>52644615
Still works alright though. They're still working on altivec optimization in TFF? Maybe that's why it's so much more sluggish than it should be.
>>
>>52642743
disappointing that they are offering 32 bit versions, I was hoping they'll use their new 64 bit cores on them. If anyone has some PPC64 boards to show me it'd be greatly appreciated. I'm the faggot with the "Fuck ARM and Intel" post btw
>>
>>52645913
I wish they weren't focusing on the embedded market, tracking down Loongson hardware is hard and expensive
>>
>>52646004
they displayed some powerful 64 bit quad core laptops (Loongson) on charbax (armdevices.net youtube channel) then no mention of it ever again, the chinks must really hate or feel threatened by the americans to hide their tech so much, assberry pie doesn't cut it either, hopefully pine64 will start selling so we can have some nice open source octa core ARM stuff at least
>>
>>52646077
I'd be content if I could get a Yeeloong, but what I really want is one of their mITX boards for my next server.
>>
OP here, didn't realize this thread is alive.

What resources does everyone use for PowerPC assembly?
>>
>>52640510
May be slow these days, but no hardware backdoors.
>>
>>52640510
>>52648257
Just noticed your screen resolution, is that a High-res Powerbook G4 15"? Loving mine, shame some of its keys don't work.
>>
For anyone with a 12" PowerBook G4, I don't know about all compatible models but I know the 1.5GHz model and I believe the 1.33GHz model is, you can upgrade from the XGA TFT panel to an SXGA+ IPS panel, same screen as the ThinkPad X60t
