>>52641150 >Meanwhile back here in reality PPC rigs were much faster than x86 rigs clock for clock For what tasks? The modern web is still browsable on a 500MHz PIII on XP, meanwhile my G4 1.5GHz with Tiger overheats while taking 5x longer to load any page even on "Better Performance" mode. Tenfourfox on G4 12". Firefox on a ThinkPad 390X.
Adobe Photoshop was more efficient on PPC back in the day, but as soon as Apple switched to Intel, Adobe CS suite ran much quicker on Windows.
>>52642144 That's also good, I was looking for some old Non-Intel Non-AMD machines to play with and build my own silly little OS's with different features (SGI octane had a very powerful graphics unit for ex) I love how widespread openboot and openfirmware is in those architectures, fuck ARM and Intel.
>>52640510 Mah nigga. I've got a dp PowerMac G5 as my main server, a PowerBook G4 that was my dd up until a few months ago, and an eMac that I use as a bedside computer. I've got plenty more PowerPC machines, these are just the current in use ones.
>>52641021 Power in PowerPC stands for POWER, not the word power
>>52642277 OpenFirmware in PPC Apple computers is fairly gimped and doesn't comply with a lot of standards.
If you don't really care about performance and just want to learn MIPS assembly or make small applications, an SGI Indy can be had for $50-100 depending on the specs. They're old but built like tanks. Plus nekochan has a lot of cool shit, but honestly go for an O2 or even an Octane. Anything faster isn't worth it and gets into collectorfag prices. Keep in mind SGI boxes love proprietary connectors, thankfully the O2 uses a standard VGA port.
If you're really desperate you could use an emulator like qemu to play around with RISC architectures but I wouldn't use it to make an OS to run on actual hardware.
Old RISC hardware is fun as fuck to learn about, I had the chance to play Quake 3 on an SGI O2 a few years back and that's where my curiosity of other architectures started.
>>52640510 Been dailying a PowerBook G3/333 lately, pretty fucking nice. Almost want to get myself a nice G3/400 to match my top-end Power Mac G4/500.
Also got a bunch of other PPC shit but I don't use it that often.
>>52641487 >>52641567 PPC OS X aged like total shit for whatever reason, my aforementioned shitboxes perform about as good or maybe better than contemporary x86 hardware in OS 9 with Classilla. Apple was also slow as fuck to adopt newer standards mostly on the low-end, PC133 SDRAM in a system from 2002 is suffering.
but what fucking universe do you live in where a 600E is usable on the "modern" web? I used a 600E as my primary DD for 4 years and it was painful even in 2003. It's okay for maybe a text/shitposting-based use case but on what you would consider a "modern" (JS-laden and bloated as fuck) site, good luck.
>>52642277 Go for some Sun shit then, can score UltraSPARC T servers for next to nothing (around $100), or if you want something slower but quiet and more workstation-y you can grab a 650 MHz Blade 150 and kit it with an XVR-500 for about the same price. Slow on the web but with Solaris 10 10/09 (which includes StarOffice) and the RAM maxed out to 2 GB they make A-OK servers and dev boxes.
>>52642597 They are, but I mean in regards to the web mostly, I just have a hard time believing it's solely a hardware issue when Willamette/Northwood Pentium 4 systems have no trouble doing the same tasks.
>>52642743 disappointing that they are offering 32 bit versions, I was hoping they'll use their new 64 bit cores on them. If anyone has some PPC64 boards to show me it'd be greatly appreciated. I'm the faggot with the "Fuck ARM and Intel" post btw
>>52646004 they displayed some powerful 64 bit quad core laptops (Loongson) on charbax (armdevices.net youtube channel) then no mention of it ever again, the chinks must really hate or feel threatened by the americans to hide their tech so much, assberry pie doesn't cut it either, hopefully pine64 will start selling so we can have some nice open source octa core ARM stuff at least
For anyone with a 12" PowerBook G4, I don't know about all compatible models but I know the 1.5GHz model and I believe the 1.33GHz model is, you can upgrade from the XGA TFT panel to an SXGA+ IPS panel, same screen as the ThinkPad X60t
