I've just gotten into IRC. I know I'm a bit late to the party.

Can we make this an IRC general?
Just chat about experiences with Internet Relay Chat.

Is there some convenient website that lists good IRC channels?
>>
'bout 20 years late, oniichan
>>
>>52638332
Sure.

I don't know of any, just list the channels and check some out - you'll find a room eventually.
>>
>>52638365
But the technology still exists.
Are you saying IRC is outdated technology?
>>
>>52638332

IRC used to be good. Too bad the internet is completely filled with faggots. I doubt you will find anyone worth while chatting to, unless you're looking to chow down on some cock and asshole.
>>
>>52638423
You seem pretty cool. What channel are you apart of?
>>
So why exactly did IRC have to die out eventually?
>>
>>52638408
Not anon

IRC is still the best for text-based group chats or even 1-1 chats. Little config needs to be done and you don't need an account to start talking.

You see, I have this vision of having channels for all sorts of things.

A channel for general advice.
A channel full of knowledgable people, asking them to explain things simply.
A channel for legal advice.
A channel for tech support.
A channel for drug discussion.

Kind patient helpful people.
>>
IRC is used primarily to meet people who like to slap nut sacks together & fuck assholes.
>>
I still use IRC, it works well for just normal chat. I honestly don't know what this whole thing about gay people are though, I haven't encountered them more than anywhere else, and far less often than /g/ or 4chan as a whole.

>>
>>52638622
irc is called the slow-chat.
Because it's supposed to be like it.
You go to a support channel, post your question or start a discussion but people won't respond directly. They comeback from time to time, check what's up and respond. It's kinda like a mailing list but still more dynamic.

good for what?
good for files?
if so there's #bookz on undernet for books, shit like #kareraisu on rizon for anime (free xdcc anime subscriptions rather)
for chatting and generally other stuff, other than project channels, you're really not going to find "good" channels like that
you see, the best channels tend to be some of the smaller ones, not ones with thousands of idlers and the only real communication ends up always involving ops circlejerking with each other
you just gotta go through some random irc lists, whoising people with similar taste and find some good channels. People dont always like advertising channels, even setting them as secret just to avoid random faggots from walking in and shitting up their channels.
>>
>>52638332
you can try some of the 4chan channels on Rizon.
>>
>>52640351
There are lots of good IRC networks and channels find something that peaks your interest. Just learn to hardchat and join some networks until some channel sticks for you. Soon enough your have your own group to chat with.
>>
>>52638723

it's lightweight and easy to leave on in the background. dunno why people expect it to be yahoo chat 2.0

ZNC makes it 100x better.
>>
>IRC
>a protocol where it's really hard to be anonymous
no thanks

this is why i use 4chins, and no I don't mean anonymous to the government, just to the average person
>>
>>52641249
Not really that hard to be anonymous. Most networks don't mind that much if you use a proxy, and you can always just not register your nick. Really the only way to ident someone easily is if they have realname set, or their nick is something you recognize from elsewhere.

Also you don't always need to be anonymous. Most stuff on irc is connected to irl stuff, so no need.

I mostly just use it for work/user support though
>>
>>52640187
>>52639631
Thanks.
>>
>>52641288
i just have more comfort in knowing that if i say stupid shit it can't really ever be traced back to me and i can forget about it

it also broadcasts your IP address and getting a vhost is a pain in the fucking ass
>>
>>52641314
True, it's easy to query someone's ip.
I guess it'd be different if I used it for general chatting more, then I'd probably want a bit more anonymity.

For open source support and project planning and stuff, it's literal perfection.
>>
>>52641314
>>52641366
Simply just use a proxy and become liked enough to get a vhost, not hard man. Also someone has your dynamic IP address so what? They know your general city or are going to knock you offline, if the later you can very easily force a new ip lease.
>>
>>52638332
OP, why don't you just go and connect to different servers and find out for yourself? It's not hard...
>>
>>52641772
You're laughing, but some IP addresses flat out tell people where you live, address and all.

I used to have a ISP who did this.

IRC, like forums, has way too much drama.
>>

less drama on some channels than on here

But at least on chans it's greatly limited by anonymity.
>>
>>52645733
please do not compare irc to imageboards and pretend like this makes any sense
they are very different things and work in very different ways
also, please do not refer to imagesboards as `chans'
>>
>>52645793
IRC has usernames, and this leads to drama. Just as it does on forums. Chans don't have usernames, so there is less drama.

>>
>>52645878
The fact that you can use a tripcode on a chan doesn't make it the same as IRC or forums. Tripcodes are an exception, very few people use them, and using them is looked down upon. Tripcodes can also be abandoned at any time. IRC and forums don't work this way.
>>
>>52645880
IRC and forums do in fact have usernames. You're the one who hasn't used them.
>>
>>52639253
Shut up, faggot. It's 2016 and the Caliphate is rising again, liking homos is old fashioned.
>>
>>52645902
i've never been on an irc network that forces users to register their nick or one that forbids changing your nick. any that i use cloak hostnames too(and have vhosts) you're not much less anonymous here.
>>
>>52645946
*more
>>
>>52645946
Changing your nick on IRC isn't the same thing as dropping your tripcode on a chan. You must always have some nick, there is no anonymity. If you change your name you are not changing your identity, you are just changing the name people know you by. If you leave, come back under a new name and pretend to be a different person you're likely going to be discovered.

And why are you still using that trip as if it's supposed to make some kind of point? I never said tripcodes don't exist.
>>
>>52645994
of course you're not totally anonymous, but eventually you can learn to recognize people on a chan too.

i was using that trip because i was lazy
>>
>>52646035
You'll only be recognized here if there's something very peculiar about you.

I've often been accused of being someone I'm not.

I personally only use IRC for work-related things i.e. asking around about things I can't figure out on my own, especially with certain libraries in rust - it's pretty convenient when you have the library developer answer.

In the end I've ended up just using whatever the "official" irc is for that specific thing. This usually either leads to chat.freenode.net (*really* used) or irc.mozilla.org (mostly for rust)
