Finance/Actuarial major here. I really like taking my notes on OneNote and my Note 4 doesn't really allow me enough space and my iPad is a piece of shit. How accurate is the pen and writing on this thing?
Should I just go Surface book.
I am not a big fan of laptops but I really need one.
>>52615042 Same boat and I didn't want to make a "iz da surface gud" thread for it
I want to take notes and this looks better than an IPad. I was thinking about the pricey i7 version too for longevity even though I know you can build a hell of a desktop for that price, but I need a laptop for class and the tablet part would be great for taking notes and reading books.
>>52615115 I built my own desktop but I really need a tablet as I fucking suck at studying in my dorm. I have the original iPad Air as I got it for like $200 but it's really shitty for note taking. Plus I can't find a good stylus like what the Note 4 has or a surface pen.
>>52615174 My group mate has one. She uses it to draw diagrams, label things, write notes, make graphs, etc (neurophysiology lab). After 3 hours of use, the battery is barely half drained. It's incredibly useful and functional from what I've seen. If you've got the money, go for it.
>>52615579 I never said I wanted anything like the Surface line. I'm perfectly content with traditional laptops and the older style swivel hinge for tablet conversion. If I want a tablet without a keyboard I'll buy a tablet.
>>52615893 I hate you people. I really do. Please provide an argument as to why a wireless mouse and keyboard is bad for what looks like an office cubicle? The guy probably has to eat there and always has paperwork. It makes sense for less clutter of wires.
>>52615919 Most of the time people hate on wireless mice/keyboards it's because they tried 1st gen cheap Chinese shit that went to sleep until they moved the mouse across the mat or typed a novel. I've never had any issues with my M570, and I'm sure if you get a decent wireless keyboard it's going to be fine.
>>52616066 do you need me to post all the horse shit gaymer gear that people eat up for thousands of dollars? of course it's snake oil, but it's just plausible enough that nobody in that community of faggots would ever speak out about it.
>>52614901 Considering i use a T420 as my daily driver, i'm sure it would as long as i can get 2 external monitors off the bitch (dont need a third, but if i drop it on my desk i want 2 full sized monitors)
>>52616096 >unifying shit Fucking Bluetooth. God damnit Logitech you fucking cunts, make fucking Bluetooth shit so I don't have to waste my fucking USB port on my laptop that has fucking Bluetooth built in.
>>52616164 this is a "my dad works at nintendo" kinda roumer, but i was told they use their own because it has a slightly lower latency as BT, and with all the other BT devices in your house they couldn't really get the power they wanted without nuking the spectrum. (my MX705 literally works through my neighbors walls)
That and at my old college with 40+ imacs in a single room, mice would randomly pair to a new computer if it slept to long or the imacs receiver went into power save, using their own RF, they can force shit to stay paired and what not. (not sure if that was BT issue or apple implementation but i started bringing in my memechanical due to this issue, and no kids were not swapping shit around, teacher setup a camera)
but i tottaly feel you, i'd rather not have the receiver sticking out from my laptop, but hey, at least you can literally pair 16 devices to the same receiver, so i dont have to swap receivers when i go to work.
>>52615828 For my current use, I would probably only upgrade the storage and ram. I've heard that the i7 has slightly worse battery life and I don't need a more powerful machine for now. I also wouldn't upgrade to the SufaceBook cause I'm not really interested in that form factor.
>>52616316 >my MX705 literally works through my neighbors walls Mine fucks out if I put my fucking leg in the way. I've never had BT try to auto pair to another computer, so it's probably just an Apple or shitty Chinese 1st gen bullshit thing.
>>52616404 It's hard to write on anything smaller than the Surface 3 non pro. I find the SP4 to be a little too big for the bus and walking around but it's perfect for desk writing, reading and regular laptop use.
>>52616434 >Mine fucks out if I put my fucking leg in the way
does this mouse just have shit QC? like everyone i talk to hates this mouse, it doesnt track, lasts a month on battery, etc etc
i use mine daily, even when my laptop is connected to my tv, never had an issue, range is beautiful.
Shit the fucker lasted 7 months on ONE battery.
>I've never had BT try to auto pair to another computer, There were also 40 identical other computers in the same room, they were all using the supplied apple "magic mouse" and keyboard (2010)
could have been a gen1 issue, could have been a lot of problems really, we lost 3 macs the first day of class, the powersupplies literally went up in smoke, then a week later 4 more had internal cracks on the screen.
In reality it could have been a whole slew of non BT related problems, but it left a bad taste in my mouth for any peripheral thats connected via BT.
Are the touchpad and keyboard even worse than what a macbook has to offer? Yes. Can I upgrade or replace the RAM and HDD? No. How about the CPU? No. Is the battery pack composed of easily obtained, standard-sized cells or impossible to replace, nonstandard blocks? It's a fucking block.
But if you're the kind to buy a brand new machine every other year, maybe yes.
>>52616694 lel, fucking cunts. They need to go with some high quality shit instead of the Marvell garbage they use right now. My wireless just randomly stops fucking showing up until I reboot, and if I run Linux the fucker panics.
>>52614901 Functionally, it is a Laptop, isn't it? Talking about Windows OS etc. It's just that all the hardware is in the screen like a Tablet so it can be taken off the keyboard and used as one, unlike convertible Laptops which can only be folded.
>>52615690 >>52614945 jokes on you the type cover IS in fact a mechanical keyboard just not one you can rice with different switches and rings or leds (it already has leds) >>52614901 yes it can very much SP4 i7/16gb here
>>52615861 I sometimes catch myself thinking this would be really, really good; I just don't have any particular NEED for it, though - I suppose I'd like to be able to take literal notes in OneNote, besides doing normal laptop/tablet things.
This year my current desktop's five years old, but plodding along fine. Assuming Surface is still a thing in maybe two? three? years' time I'll be happy to give it a go. The only thing really stopping me now is horsepower.
I'd love if the dock gave the thing some serious graphics-card oomph. I'm also unsure whether it's a big boy device you can flatten and reinstall from external media, or if your internal storage is forever circumcised with a 'recovery partition'. These are the only things really holding me back, less the purchase price.
Been using a Surface Pro 3 for a year and a few months now and it's awesome. A few years ago, the idea of having a fully fledged, x86 Windows install on a tablet was a dream to me, and then the Surface came around. It's brilliant, lightweight and has some of the sexiest design features of any tablet.
Oh, and the best thing is the Type Cover. The touchpad doesn't fucking suck massive cock like 99% of touchpads on the market do and the keyboard is actually decent and should be considered an engineering masterpiece with its thinness and tactile feedack. Fuck Apple's Butterfly switches. This piece of cardboard is great.
It can, but you need to have a use for a tablet form factor for it to actually make sense to buy one.
I bought a X201 6GB RAM and an SSD and happened to come into a free Pro 3 a few months later. I used the Surface for a while but now when I go out to school I take the thinkpad because it's keyboard feels better and with the extended battery it lasts just as long and the ssd and i5 make it perform just as well.
Now my surface sits in a tablet stand hooked up to my monitor and keyboard to be used as a desktop. I take it out to read the news or watch videos during breakfast or dinner but not much else.
>>52614901 i got the 3. main reason why it "replaces" my laptop is because it's small enough to take everywhere and use.
last laptop I had though was a dell m1530. this thing barely fit into my bag, and wouldn't last 3 hours on a charge. I got it with a video card but it never seemed to be able to play anything faster than 25fps at the lowest graphic settings. so it was a brick that needed a charger and could use internet/porn
surface pro 3, I can carry it easily and it works full windows, plays decent games and most importantly, works. updating bullshit with windows sucks but I'm managing it. only things I don't like are the premium Microsoft wants to charge for extras and the battery life is still low(about 4-5 hours constant use). if the 5 comes out with a great battery life (>9 hours) I'll buy it.
Speaking how I already have a main PC at home, I think these are pretty good note taking in class and such. I had the SP2 and it did great. I want an upgrade but the SPB and SP4 are rumored to be total ass.
Can someone ID the laptop in this pic? I really want to know what it is.
