I like the roku.....

Get a miracast hub

Roku has more features and doesn't force you to use chrome.

Fire TV Stick.

The roku is way better and a standalone device. You should get a roku 3.
>>
I own a chromecast. It's fine. With that said, get a Roku

Roku

Use plex. It's a better setup anyways.
>>
If you use chrome extensions, you can play your local videos on it, you can cast your android phone to your TV, and if you use Firefox and allcast you can play videos on internet directly to your TV. Why do you guys think Roku is better? Am I missing a thing?
>>
>>52598394
Roku has screen mirroring and Firefox also

>>52598315

My server is a raspi. When I set it up I read that there wasn't an ARMv7 version of plex but apparently there is.
Any significant advantages over Emby?
>>
>>52598450
But Roku is much more expensive, right?

I'm thinking about getting a basic steam streaming & KODI box, but I have no idea what class of CPU I should be looking into are Atoms & Celerons good enough or should I move higher.

Using the Chromecast right now.

It's the best money I've spent on hardware in the past two years

With an Android device, you can stream almost everything to it.

What the fuck does a Roku do that can top that?

They made a new Chromecast and its pretty good

avoid chromecast.
Got one as a gift for "granny" level user (uses with windows 7 and android tablet).

It works... kinda.

Only way for "granny" to stream from windows 7 is via chrome and a beta plugin. I'd say it works 70% of the time. Other times it stutters or can't detect the dongle.
From android, you have to use apps that are built for chromecast (bad) or use paid apps that granny just can't handle.

It's also a DRM nightmare, and full of spyware and shit. (I ran wire shark during testing. Lots of shit being send back to the mothership... and no it wasn't just "checking for updates")

Buy something that supports open source, or just get an analogue sling box or a long hdmi cable. Chrome cast aint worth it.
>>
>>52597333
Fire Stick so I don't have to transcode anything plus it has all of the same features as these.
>>

Sounds like a good idea, but I've run R pis as home servers and have had problems. Twice now, for various reasons, the pi got unplugged and wouldn't boot back up.
Turns out killing the power at the wrong time can corrupt the FS.
My own fault for using a shitty sd card. But what do you do if granny reboots the pi by mistake? "Yea granny, you gotta plug in a usb keyboard into the side of the little box and type 'chkd'... What? No. U,S,B granny! No it's not a postal service... it's a..."

etc...

got a Chromecast for Xmas. I like it, for my needs, it's fine, as i don't have a NAS or server of any kind. It saves me the trouble of having a PC hooked up to the TV anymore, as well. I'm watching Mobile Suit Gundam here in the pic, from KissAnime's site with ease, as well as i can stream any downloaded content from the computer to the tv.
>>
I bought a Western Digital TV.
It's pretty neat.

The only problem I have is that you can't control your TV's volume from the remote, so you have to hold two remotes when watching movies on it.

Wouldn't usually get either, something like this is more flexible...
>>
I have an old 27 inch monitor and a couple logitech speakers. I've been thinking of hooking a roku or something up to it to watch shit in bed (fuck using a keyboard/mouse in bed) but as far as I know Roku's only have an HDMI output so I don't know how I could attach the speakers.
>>
Chromecast equivalent is built into most new android TVs. It's shit. It rarely ever connects ("an error has occurred"), and when it does, the image keeps jumping. It's only good for browsing and powerpoint, movies are not watchable.

Don't know anything about Roku.
>>
I have the newest Chromecast. I really enjoy it.
>>
It's better to make a full HTPC, but if you just want a cheap way to access your media server they'll both work. What matters is your setup on your server, not what you plug into the TV.

Chroemcast wouldn't wildly successful if your case was the norm.

What's the point when you can just install Kodi onto a Fire Stick for a fraction of the cost?

Fire tv

You get real performance.

Alternatively roku 4, and these both have voice search which is Gud.

No seriously though what the fuck are you even using it for where you need something besides Kodi? It's not a primary device.

>What's the point when you can just install Kodi onto a Fire Stick for a fraction of the cost?
That it does actually offer playback of anything without lag.

Plus if you want, a bunch of console emulation and reasonable capability to show high resolution photos (RAM...) from your camera and so on, too.

You know, actual computer stuff. It's also hopefully not like $100-150 will really matter in your budget.
>>
>>52597333
I have been using a Roku forever and I love that damn thing.
>>
>>52605055
>That it does actually offer playback of anything without lag.

Shocker: The fire stick won't lag either unless you're tying to do 4k. In that case the Fire TV has wireless AC IIRC.

Plus, I don't see what's stepping you from showing photos from a camera or doing emulation. It's an Android device under the hood.
