Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Does anyone know a way to install a distro to a directory without needing root access?

I'm trying to do it with debootstrap just now but it's really pissing in my cheerios. For one thing, I can't figure out why it actually needs root to run.

What are the main differences between linux and windows besides just navigating the terminal?
>>

you really don't need to do this
differences:
no registry
file systems
directory structure
everything is a text file instead of an object like in windows
there are different permission groups you can use for the users
no need for file extensions because MIME
choice in DE/WM
package managers (really handy)

debian is great but you need to be able to use a search engine and you need to know how to read. if you are lazy, get *buntu instead.
resources are listed in the second post of this thread, the recommended software page on the wiki and alternative.to will be helpful. watch some "10 things to do after installing <insert distro name>" video or something.

Question from noob:

How the fuck is a normal person supposed to know how are packages in repositories named exactly?

Lets say a friend tells me I should try cinnamon DE. How am I supposed to know that it is available as "cinnamon-desktop-environment" and not just "cinnamon", "cinnamon-de" or some other shit??

In windows, I would just double-click executable.

Imagine you put some distro on your parents or little cousins PC. How are they supposed to know which package they need, what does it do, how is it exactly called etc, let alone install something from non-official repositories you have to add manually also.

How is this user friendly?

type just aptitude into the terminal to see what it gives you, there is not reason not to use it if you are on a debian based distro. it's not exactly the same. type "man aptitude" to see what they mean, this works for almost all software on GNU/Linux.
you need to type sudo before that command to make it work.

My parents wouldn't install a new DE.
If they used cinnamon / mint, typing the name of an application not installed in the menu will provide a link so they can install it with a single click.
Updates are also a single click + writing a password, nothing weird there.

My grandmother runs ubuntu-mate and I just sat it up, taught her how to use it and it works for her.
Previously she used ubuntu 10.04, and she doesn't know what windows is like.
It is a lot easier for me to support her this way

>>

Do not start Arch Linux unless you're willing to learn Linux school of hard knocks style.

There are detailed guides to installing it but it's involved and can have problems pop up that someone with no experience would be helpless against.

For a newb, I'd recommend Fedora or Ubuntu.

I prefer Fedora because I find it more straightforward and the package manager easier to use, plus sudo is not enabled by default.

Sudo is a bullshit way of executing root processes where you type in your own user password for every goddamn command.

I kek'd. Windows is loaded with backdoors, background processes, and needless bloat.

You do not own your OS. You have a digital license and have signed an agreement letting Microsoft harvest your data, including data from private folders and your fucking emails with impunity.

Windows is set up so that you are only allowed to use your computer the way Microsoft intended. You can only run microsoft-approved software, are not allowed to modify the system, and are not allowed to have privacy.

> learning how to poo correctly

Technically speaking, Indians are better at pooing than westerners. Western toilets are designed to be sat on, which is terrible pooing posture. It closes a muscle in your rectum and makes it significantly harder to poo, and leads to a variety of afflictions such as hemmorhoids, constipation, and even bowel impaction.

Squatting in a field is in fact the easiest and healthiest way to poop, and is the way we did it when we were cavemen. We should never have abandoned it, and in fact in virtually every place in the world save for North America, their facilities are designed to make squatting easier.

>I want to make one thing crystal clear - Windows, in some regards, is even worse than Linux and it's definitely not ready for the desktop either. Off the top of my head I want to name the following quite devastating issues with Windows: • devastating Windows rot, • no enforced file system and registry hierarchy (I have yet to find a single serious application which can uninstall itself cleanly and fully), • svchost.exe, • no true safe mode, • no clean state, • the user as a system administrator (thus viruses/malware - most users don't and won't understand UAC warnings), • no good packaging mechanism (MSI is a fragile abomination), • no system wide update mechanism (which includes third party software), • Windows is extremely difficult to debug, • Windows boot problems are often fatal and unsolvable unless you reinstall from scratch, • Windows is hardware dependent (especially when running from UEFI), • Windows updates are terribly unreliable and they also waste disk space, • there's no way to cleanly upgrade your system (there will be thousands of leftovers), etc.

Wow you sure showed me

>Gives link to an argumentatively insane write-up
>Expects people to take him seriously.
He has good evidence, but his argument is moot, as he doesn't say what a Desktop OS is. That write-up is the equivalent of me saying water is unhealthy, as drinking too much of it can have negative effects on your health. Although the evidence is true, it doesn't prove anything, as I never defined what "unhealthy" is. That's the problem with bashing. It doesn't help to drive your point. To do this properly would be to state what a Desktop OS is (This is providing an ideal alternative to compare to) or say that something is better (This is providing a real alternative to compare to). You cannot say negatives without saying why these negatives are negative.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

>What are the main differences between linux and windows?
GNU/Linux respects your freedom. It permits you to do whatever you please with your own hardware.

I'll try in this thread. My harddrive with my opensuse 13.2 virtual machine died and I was going to reinstall the latest version. But now it's all confusing with Tumbleweed and Leap versions. Pretty sure you need to defrag from within windows. Then use disk management to resize it.

that would be the usual ("in windows") method, but ntfsresize will also move data out of the way

>>52585656
I did that once trying to get a little more of the main boot drive during an install. It took forever and it was apparently dangerous to kill that process but I did it anyway. the first thing ntfsresize does it flag the volume as "needs check", it's normal even after a perfect resize for windows to bring up chkdsk
the reason is simply that ntfs-3g has no chkdsk, so it can't do it itself

How do I add a recycle bin in Linux?
Using a tiling wm instead of a DE.
>>
>>52585819
i've been trying it on and off since 2012

it's close, it might be worth using if;
- you're not using its built in raid5/6 (it works, but the first sign of problems and you're fucked, this is still relatively new)
- you don't mind it currently being slower than competing filesystems in many cases
- you greatly benefit from a feature it has (subvolumes, compression, snapshots, flexible as fuck raid, etc)

if you use none of the fancy features then it's just a (for now) slower ext4

i personally will switch once its raid5/6 is proven solid, for now i use it on small things like my flash drive (compression is handy)

btrfs is at the stage where it's no longer "definately unstable", but also not "proven stable"
officially it's "should be fine for day to day use, but keep a backup"

the main thing left is its failure recovery/fsck (that is, if things go wrong, you have less tools/chances available to recover with), and that comes with time and reports from people using it

then there's the fact that it's not as quick as ext4/xfs (though it is a very different filesystem, it does copy-on-write and checksumming)

I know ubuntu is not to blame, it's just that with ubuntu I didn't use the cli much, I forgot almost everything that isn't drilled into my skull, so I chose a wm only, to use it as an opportunity to learn more about the cli.

Basic commands like cp rm, and whatnot.

pcmanfm, a gui file manager had a move to trash option and no delete, just wanted to get that working.

Everything in the trash is still there and it's taking up space, but I can't access it.

>>52586294
>then there's the fact that it's not as quick as ext4/xfs (though it is a very different filesystem, it does copy-on-write and checksumming)
oh, i suppose i should add that these can be disabled (see >>52586154)
i haven't seen benchmarks with them disabled, but i imagine it would be pretty close to ext4 in that case, BUT, you lose copy-on-write and checksumming support (which ext4 doesn't do anyway, so it's not *really* a negative)

I'm especially confused about the "I'm two(?) days in", yet you haven't installed the OS yet. Like, what the heck? Especially on a pure Arch/Architect installation medium...what have you been doing the past day?

But nevermind that, for now.

For a simple, uncomplicated Arch system, you wouldn't necessarily go wrong with a single root partition. That's just a single partition that covers however much space you need: you don't need to worry about specific space for /home/, for /usr/, or anything like that. And all of your other basic needs are taken care of, too: booting is will be taken care of when you configure it, you can make a swapfile if you need to, etc.

Now, there are reasons behind splitting up the partitions (e.g. portability and safety if sectors fail). But you have to ask yourself if those reasons actually apply to you. IMO, that's the first step to become a "real" Linux user: not just blindly saying yes or no, but actually thinking about whether you really need it.

System-wide encryption is something else to keep in mind.

I need it for vm stuff that cam in from recent kernels.

Perhaps you should compromise with Fedora?

Ill look at it. The name is a huge turn off but it seems ok and I like gnome desktop.

Welp, goodbye Windows. I think I have almost everything sorted, the only things I might miss are foobar and honeyview. Any good alternative? Clementine looks fine I guess, but what about Honeyview? I have to look at my compressed chinese porn comics somehow.

do it.

A cool shell command I learned/made:

ls -Q | sort -R | tail -n 1 | xargs mpv

Gets a list of the current directory and puts individual items in double quotes, sorts the list randomly, takes the last item of the list, and then plays it with mpv. Pretty decent if you have a sizable porn video directory and want jerk off to something randomly.

I'll consider ways to grab a random picture in a folder with lots of subdirectories, too (I know ls -R, but you'd also want the folder name, too).

Learning the command line is kinda fun, not gonna lie.

All popular cli programs have a gui frontend.
>>
>>52589402
Take a look into "find" it's better suitable for this (and better portable doe to locale settings of ls; means the output of ls may differ, find output doesn't).
Furthermore your command could be shorter:
mpv $(ls -Q | shuf -n 1)

Anyways: I always love to see people enjoy scripting!
>>
>>52589649
Here a find example, as function:
rpv() { mpv $(find "$@" -iname '*' | shuf -n 1); }

Save into ~/.bashrc and run
rpv ~/path/porn/
>>
>>52589696
I forgot the quotes!
rpv() { mpv "$(find "$@" -iname '*' | shuf -n 1)"; }

I'm completely new to programming and want to have a taste of "freedom":

Should I dual-boot normal Ubuntu, or Xubuntu on a laptop? I know there's a bot-net or whatever on plain Ubuntu, but are there other glaring differences?

I apologize if this is a question that gets asked a lot. The websites don't really put anything in layman's terms.

To that guy that didn't want to do anything because of NTFS, my computer is panicking a bit copying tens of thousands of images. Anything better than cp for copying for future reference?
>>
>>52590042
Xubuntu is just Ubuntu with xfce as a desktop environment. I ran Ubuntu with xfce for a while until eventually settling on Debian.
>>

>>
>>52590090
I'll try to get good with that since I need a FreeFileSync replacement.

>>52590092
I've only used dd for bootable images on a flash drive, how would it work without killing the entire drive?
>>
>>52590042
There was a botnet at Ubuntu's Unity spin connected with Amazon. A good reason to avoid anything made by Canonical. So my suggestions for babbies first linux: Linux Mint for learning the debian way or Manjaro for learning the Arch Linux way.
>>
>>52590132
desu, I dont know why /g/ still recommends canonical shit, the amazon thing is something that should never ever happen on any linux distro any everyone should show that shit like this is not welcome and avoid it like you said
>>
>>52590080
So if I ran the Debian Script in the Op, it wouldn't work in XUbuntu? I thought Unity was the DE for plain old Ubuntu.

As I said, I'm a total noob, so I don't know what's different across every desktop environment. What problems might I run into if I used XFCE?

i put off using rsync for the longest time because of the overwhelming number of options, but it's actually very simple to use

like, to sync say, contents of /A to /B, preserving everything (like cp -a), it's just;
rsync -a /A/. /B

or with a few common extras;
rsync -avh --progress /A/. /B

(verbose, human readable numbers, per-file progress bar)

Hello Reddit.
>>
>>52590154
I still haven't looked at that, but it should work on Xubuntu.

You can run most desktop environments on most distributions. Unity, xfce, GNOME, KDE, etc. can all be run on Ubuntu.

If you want something that just wekrs, then get Mint, Xubuntu or Ubuntu with xfce. Try out different enviroments to see which one is right for you.

Interesting. Can't believe I didn't think to check mpv's man page.

>>52589649
>>52589741

IMO, I still like my general method at >>52589402, since it's more extensible for, say, playlists.

I figured out the pictures-in-subdirectories problem, too, thanks to you:

find -iname '*' -print | shuf -n 5 | xargs sxiv

So, I could make, for example:
rpp() {
find -iname '*' -print | shuf -n "$@" | xargs sxiv;
}

And then call "rpp 100" in a porn pictures folder to create a playlist of 100 random pictures in sxiv.
>>
>>52590220
>
shuf -n "$@"

Now this is ebin. Nice idea!
>>
>>52590220
Just leaving this here, because I use mpv for images too:

a) The mpv.conf:
[extension.jpg]
pause

[extension.png]
pause

[extension.gif]
loop-file="inf"

[extension.webm]
loop-file="inf"

b) The input.conf:
CTRL+DEL run "/bin/sh" "-c" "rm ${path} && notify-send -u critical -i mpv 'mpv'
'${filename} deleted' || notify-send -u critical -i mpv 'mpv' '${filename} could
not be deleted'"

(for a delete function)
>>
>>52590302
you could use zenity to add a graphical "are you sure" dialog to that delete function

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
