That's because webms, despite the massive quality improvement, are 1/4 or less the size of a gif.

Compare OPs 1 second animu bullshit to this, then look at the file sizes.

GIFs are still better suited for a short and simple loop or graphic. Why would you feel the need to turn something like this into a webm.
>>
>gifs use less CPU
Relatively insignificant when you consider how far CPUs have come since the GIF.

>shorter than webms = better
Objectively not true, webms can store more footage than a gif in a smaller size. If you want shorter webms, either make them yourself or seek out people who make short webms. Simply having the option of making webms long is not a con.

They're the same.

gifs are images and webm are videos

these are gif properties that are UNIVERSAL thus something like webM will never be able to replace it

gifs will:

autoplay by default
have alpha transparancy
autorepeat by default
have no sound by default

webm or other video formats need a bunch of hacks to replicate gif properties.. then your gonna need every single website to have all of these same hacks (which will never happen)

Is anybody else having a problem with Firefox shitting the bed with .webms? I've noticed if I open too many (not at once mind you) Firefox starts freezing up. It's a pretty recent problem though desu

Do you use 4chanX? I don't have that problem anymore after getting that. Firefox screws up on Youtube though but I heard that it's an adblocker issue

I liked being able to go to an anime gif thread and expanding all images and then saving the whole thing. I can't do that with webms and it would rape my cpu opening 100s of webms despite having an i7 4770k.

Also if someone knows how to get previews of webms on windows explorer please help.

On 4chan, using 4chanX, gifs and webms behave exactly the same for me. I can hover over either and they instantly play, and loop. I can turn the sound off globally for all webms too.

The only difference is with webms is that they're higher quality and can last longer.

Seriously, gifs on 4chan need to die. Gifs in general need to die.

There is literally no benifit to them

On a one to one scale yes, when there are several on a page it's better to have webm as they don't play automatically.

Longer is always better
>Gifs are Easier to save
Right click, save video as.
>Gifs have preview images while webms don't
I've never seen a webm that doesn't have a preview image.
webm is a video format so it supports sound and has significantly better compression while still having far superior colour and sound all with a smaller file size.

With gifs being images you can drag it from the browser to a folder and it auto saves it. Can't do this with webm.

or you could just click the save button and browse to the folder

why would you open a second window, navigate to the location, drag the gif into the folder instead of just clicking save and navigating to the folder

Because I very often drag pictures to my desktop to save them and sort them later.

or everything in a thread is going to go into the same folder. It saves a lot of clicks.

Also another problem is that if you expand a bunch of webms and save the thread it won't save all the webms like it would with images.

I'm aware of the VRAM memory cloning in DX11. Supposedly DX12 doesn't clone memory and you will actually get double the VRAM in Crossfire and SLI.

As to why I use 2 970s, I do a lot of 3D CAD work in Revit, Solidworks, and Inventor. I also do a lot of rendering in Maya and Adobe After Effects. At work, I have a proper workstation with K40s and a server render farm full of K80s for rendering. For home usage and out of office touch ups, 2 970s do the job just fine.
>>
>>52574727
Oh, I also game at 1080p @ 144 hz with the sliders maxed on every game I play. Even with MSAA and SSAA, I still don't hit 3.5 gigs of VRAM. Granted, I'm also not using Ultra HD mods of anything either. /g/ maymays really aren't that accurate unless Fermi is involved.

they both have their strong points.
auto-animating webms isn't really worth doing because as you said they use more CPU.
So for short loops and epic reaction images GIFs are better.
For anything beyond that, webms are better.

Also webms do have preview images.
>>
>>52577825
it's true.
4chan x actually recommends against auto-animating webms even though the option is there, because if you say open a 300 post webm thread it's not going to keep up.
Same doesn't happen with GIFs.

AFAIK, the webm codecs aren't hardware accelerated. This means the decoding and rendering happens on the CPU, not the graphics unit as it is for H.264.
>>
>Gifs uses less CPU than webms
Not true. WebMs can be hardware accelerated. I am not sure which GPUs support it but quite a bit of SoCs does, as well as Broadwell CPUs.
If you really care about CPU usage, then WebM with the right hardware is far better.

>Gifs are shorter than webms usually which is better
1) There is nothing in the WebM specification which says they have to be longer than gifs. The only reason why they are longer is because people choose to make them longer, because the format is better and allows for it.
2) How is the ability to make longer clips a drawback? Just don't make the clips long if you don't want to.

>Gifs are Easier to save
How is "right click -> Save video as..." harder than "right click -> save Image as..."?

>Gifs have preview images while webms don't
Depends on the website and program. There is nothing stopping anyone from making WebMs autoplay.

Nope. Gifs can't do shit except some reaction. Webms can show something cool, demonstrate something, be short pieces of video for humour etc.

Bullshit a webm only decodes on a CPU when it is in view.
I tested this on a q6700 when they were first allowed to be uploaded.

There are CPUs with VP8 hardware decode, but it barely matters for VP8 as it's so fast to decode on the CPU, plus most 4chan webm's tend to max out at 720p. The biggest video on this thread takes 20% of one core to decode on my laptop.
