>tfw mom won't let me run an ethernet cable up the stairs
>tfw she says wifi is best and doesn't want cables messing the house up
How do you overcome this? I hate wifi so much.
might turn out to be worse than wireless though
you torrent, stream and do anything to suck just waste data and make it impossible for anyone to get on wifi
then when the bill is fucking outragous just be like "someone hacked our wifi and is stealing all our jiggabits, they must be pros but if we use ethernet we can stop them"
No, just add and remove everyone else's MAC address to the block list periodically every day.
>someone's messing with our WiFi
Either that or tell her The Doctors recently did a piece on how WiFi causes autism and gluten
How old are you? If you are over 18 and not disabled.... Literally go fuck yourself. How DARE you think your mother is mean for not wanting a fucking cord running up the stairs. Put your computer downstairs by the router.
the tech is there, but there are so many variables in what speeds you will get.
I only ended up getting 10mbit between two floors
Proper wifi ain't so bad, it's come a long way and AC wifi is decent for what it is.
I would say buy a high(er) end router, but chances are OP can't afford it on his underage allowance.
U could focus ur efforts on living on ur own and not being mommy's angry little bitch
Jk kill ur mom, enjoy the one day of freedom u get before the cops come and send u to jail and rape ur booty like the little faggot u are
>mum comes to live in your house
>anon, why won't you let me put my lounge suite in???
>she's well overdue to move out
>you still pay for the rent on the floor
>there are perfectly good chairs already there
Now reverse this position, and you know how your mum feels. Also, move out, manbaby.
set this up in your room and see if she likes that. hey its wifi.
if you need cables going into every room, and it's a house that has a full basement, rather than just a partial basement, then that would mean you need only drill a single hole through each floor., and you can just clip the cables to the ceiling.
>baaaaaaaaawwwwh, my parents enforce rules in their own house that they fucking payed for
Fucking underage cunt, if you don't like it get your own place and pay for it if you want the right to make policy. Jesus fuck I hate millennials so fucking much.
This, about to do the same because ceilings here are too fucked up to run wiring through. Thought about a powerline adapter but if there are any other options don't opt for this.
I'm im the exact same situation as OP, but I already have a TP-Link powerline. It sucks however, loses connection like every 2 hrs, and it wont come back till I unplug it and plug it in or wait for about 5 mins.
the question is : should I buy another powerline? will this fix the issue? if so, which?
>inb4 underage , move out
rents are fucking expensive here. I hope I can in one year
>still living at home with mommy and daddy
>has the nerve to call someone an underage manchild
>doesn't want cables messing the house up
I wouldn't want it too.
> explain her calmly about pings in her skype calls and shit
> don't act angry kid
> find a cable that doesn't scream with its look
> do your job
> profit of both
>everybody recommending PowerLine adapters ITT
No, if you use cable TV then get MoCA adapters and you should get line speed Internet and wired latency without the variability of PowerLine adapters.
Just be sure to buy a moca filter so the signal doesn't leave the household. It costs like seven bucks and will prevent your neighborhood from joining your moca network.
This needs a really big caution sign though.
What this anon is saying could be true, if your house is wired parallel-wise. If most electronics in your house are wired in a serial fashion, like my pre-WWII shit housing, powerline ethernet will get you worse speeds than wi-fi because of signal interference.
I'm in my 30s and live with my parents and am about to take responsibility with my gf who is in her 30s and lives with her parents.
I took my money, from my job, got a room mate, got in my car with my clothes and shit, moved out, and used my money to pay for food rent and gasoline, and continued to live my life. It's not that hard.
>Letting the technologically illiterate have opinions
>Still living with parents
>tfw dad tested ethernet and now wants to lay cables in the walls
>regrets not preparing for the possibility when he built the house a shit ton
>now have to tear down walls to do it
The absolute madman
I have my own house, and ran cat6 through the walls, not where people can trip on it like a faggot. Your mom's right. Get a job, move out, and stop bothering the poor woman.
>nice b8, got me to reply.
It's literally only a problem if you have old shitty electronics that are not properly EMC shielded and emit fucktons of interference down the power lines.
Old washing machines are dryers are the perfect example, sometimes even microwaves.
If anything, getting bad performance with powerline adapters just gives you an indicator of the shit your PSU has to put up with, and maybe a little early warning that's it's going to die well before it should.
>Thats interesting, is there a way to measure interference like that at the machines
Basically put an oscilloscope on the connection between the plug and the wall socket when it's running.
Problem is it's very difficult to filter out any noise already on the lines from other stuff, so you'd need to do a before and after and see the difference.
>or run them through something that fixes it?
Ferrite beads can help to some degree, but can also make things worse if you don't know what you're doing.
In some ways the best thing to do is just isolate problem devices from the main lines, using a UPS or whatever.
