Check the /g/ wiki that's stickied, it has a good guide to get you started. What I would do is find a background that you like and build your homescreen around fitting the aesthetic of that background. Also, minimalism is much easier to make look nice than having a lot of stuff going on.

firstly anonymous user, it's so bright cause like any reasonable person, i keep my phone brightness at ~ 70% to save battery, but this won't show on your PC

secondly, white on white means they blend in enough to ignore them if they're not needed, but they're also apparent enough to tell them apart when needed especially given my familiart with my setup
