I don't understand why Microsoft adamantly refuses to give up on this horrible form factor.

It's not good as a tablet because it's big, heavy, and a poor aspect ratio for tablet usage, and it's not good as a laptop because it has no hinge or real keyboard and relies on some shitty flimsy plastic attachment and a kickstand that barely works on anything but a flat table surface.

Asus solved this problem back in 2010 with the Transformer, which had a completely independent tablet base that let you use it as a tablet when you wanted a tablet, and a full size laptop keyboard with integrated battery with a 180 degree steel hinge when you wanted a laptop. At the $300 price point.

The Surface is a decent table and a shitty laptop. The form factor just doesn't work.

Microsoft's insistence on sticking to flimsy plastic keyboard and kickstand over the clearly vastly superior detachable form factor that literally every other manufacturer uses is what confuses me.

Surface is a tablet for people who still need a laptop from time to time. It's the "tablet that can replace your laptop". In that context a kickstand and keyboard that are hidden 90% of the time and only show up when you need to type a quick email is exactly what they wanted. For people who want a real laptop/tablet hybrid, they made the Surface Book, which is "the ultimate laptop."

The surface has a friction hinge. And the surface book has 5 contacts to the tablet that are not cheap plastic. Plus, they just slot into the tablet similar to a usb C port, much more durable.

I'm using my SP4 on my lap just fine. After an hour it's just another way to use a laptop. You get used to it the same way people got used to keyboards and smartphones.
