why would someone liquid cool their ram?
>>
Do you ever get those times when your butt itches really bad but you're too lazy to scratch it so you just fart really hard and hope that scratches it?
>>
>>52539686
Running out of stuff to cool I guess. This CES there was a liquid-cooled PSU.
>>
>>52539686
They're running FB-DIMMS?
>>
>>52539698
Sometimes, but only when I'm alone.

>>52539686
Overclocked/high voltage ram can get pretty hot. Also it looks aesthetically pleasing. That's just my guess.

>>52539680
Feel free to ignore this thread my friend :)
>>
>>52539714
Koolance used to make a liquid cooled PSU ~6-7 years ago, it's isn't a new idea.
>>
>>52539686
Addendum: why would someone liquid cool their mobo?
>>
>>52539671
How many dirty pictures do you dig up on an average day?
>>
>>52539722
>heatsinks so wide you can only use 2 sticks
>>
>>52539755
Dissapointingly not many.
Found some weird fetishes when backing up peoples files and I'd stumble across their porn folder.
>>
>>52539755 >>52539795

I should add that we're a small family business so we usually only get a few customers a day.
>>
>>52539671
What kind of skills do I need to get a gig like yours.
I could fix any computer in my sleep but I've never really bothered applying at a local repair shop because they are generally run by assholes.
>>
>>52539753
For overclicking you retard
>>
>>52539842
I've never heard of doing this before and somehow, I've never heard of anyone's mobo causing house fires.
>>
Can I get some 1gb DDR2 sticks homie?
>>
>>52539827
The way you sell yourself and social ability play an important role here. Are you a stuttering autist? If not you should be ready for it if youre an average /g/entooman.
>>
>>52539867
Because they explode or start a fire, the CPU power delivery system ( the part that's watercooled) just craps out if its too warm for too long, and then you have a dead mobo.
>>
>>52539827
You just need to be able to fix computers and be friendly with the customers. Don't cheap out on your service, your time is worth money.
Also try to find good suppliers that give good service and pricing.

We charge a flat 95 dollar service fee for repairs, on top of any hardware costs.
For example, a 1tb hard drive costs 69 dollars here, with 95 dollars service fee that's $164. To make them more likely to buy I'll sometimes offer to round it down to $150.

Remember, if they knew how to do it they'll buy the hard disk and install it themselves. Time is money. Don't be cheap, be professional.

Also I'm Australian so other countries will be different, naturally.

>Are you a stuttering autist
No I just live in the south, these people get very much offended if they think you know more than they do. It's uncanny, everyone is walking on eggshells around their superiors to keep from losing their jobs because they are hiding how retarded they are.

Most stores around here are actually Bestbuy tier retards who opened a store because everyone else is even more retarded so they feel like they are good at what they do. Then I walk in and try to help out by telling them that maybe you don't have to trash a computer when it gets a virus you could just reformat it and they get all offended and start blabbing about their "years of experience" and how "you don't know shit and they ain't gonna be criticized by some kid". I'm like 24 and this has happened before. I honestly don't understand.

Maybe it's just my area.

>tfw I will never be a computer tech living in the middle class holler where old guys bring in porn virus infections and slutty farmers' daughters bring in their macbooks full of baby sheep pictures

Set up your own pc business. If you're honest and genuinely better than these other stores then word will spread and you'll gain business.

You can even work from home. My parents started the business in the garage and once it took off they set up a proper shop, been in the business for around 25 years I think, I'll have to check with them on that.
>>
>>52539989
I honestly probably could.

Considering the markup these local guys have i could BTTFO easily as competition. Were talking like 500% minimum here.

I've just never had the drive to start my own shop, I don't think it would go well desu. Maybe if I was older.

Start it up but only order your stock when you need it.

We make most our money on repairs. We can't compete in price with msy or mwave, they import their stock directly and we're just a small business.

It'll be the same for you though, so only order in what you need when you need it.

We try to keep prices fair, we buy our hard drives 65 dollars ex tax, and sell them at 99 dollars. Msy imports them directly and in bulk and sells it retail at 69 dollars. You'll be in a similar position I imagine, so set your prices fair to yourself based on your cost, not other people's prices. You'll do fine, just be honest with your customers, but don't teach them jack shit about how to do anything themselves or they'll slowly stop coming completely.

Why? a 1tb HDD is like 45 bucks, is that for install too?
>>
>>52540093
It's in dollarydoos.

OOOOOHHHH got it.
>>
>>52540093
It's 65 ex tax here, that's wholesale.
With 10% gst it's actually more expensive than msy, which sell retail.

65+6 = 71, as opposed to 69 dollars at msy.

Fuck them. Used to do wholesale but became retail, killed a lot of small businesses like that.

When you factor in other expenses like petrol, 99 dollars is a fair price for us.

With installation like I mentioned before its usually $150(149). Don't be cheap, but don't be too unfair either.
>>
>>52540160
Well here in freedomland I could bulk-order 1 TB HDDs, sell and install them for like 80 bucks and still be raking it in. Shit takes like 5 minutes and I'd make 40 bucks. Australia must suck.
>>
>>52539827
You need to be more of a salesman than computer guru. You probably aren't going to make shit on selling and installing new components. You may even lose money on that. Where you make your money is through contracts and licenses. Free software and services are your worst enemy. You don't want your customers using free software, because that don't pay shit. Norton, McAffee, and any number of shady no-name anti-virus/security companies will pay you to whore their products. ISPs will pay you to whore their services. Plus you'll want to talk them into buying an extended warranty for that hardrive you just sold them and installed, because a lot of people are dumb enough to willingly pay extra. Make sure you never let on that repairs and maintenance are actually so simple that even your customers could do it themselves. They think this shit is difficult and far above them, and you don't want to discourage that. Of course you don't want to come right out and tell them that they are morons either, because it's different when other people are saying it.

These days it pays to branch out into phones and tablet "repairs" too. A lot more people are buying new phones and tablets, than new PCs and laptops. Being able to replace someone's cracked screen, or shitty battery will make you a hero to a lot of people. It'll get their foot in the door, and if they like and trust you, they might just come to you when it's time to get a new phone or switch providers--the majority of people are dissatisfied with their current provider anyway, regardless of who that provider is.

One downside is that people can be filthy fucking animals. They are going to bring you PCs that are infested with roaches. If you are working out of your home, it is going to get infested as well.
>>
>>52540186
How much does the competition do it for?

I'm pretty sure you can bump that up to 100 per person if you have enough self confidence.

Also don't forget to do a bunch of shit for free. Customer brings in a virus ridden computer? Defrag the hdd and delete temporary files for them while it's with you. They will love you for it, it's how you get regulars. But you have to tell them what you did without sounding like a cunt.

And yeah, like I said, a lot of small businesses have died thanks to what msy and mwave are doing, it's not fair. Life isn't fair. We're only still here because we do repairs too.
>>
>>52540235
Also listen to this anon, he knows his shit. We just recently started cracked screen repairs for ipads and we're going to start with iPhones and other popular phones like samsungs.

I used to be the only tech guy at a Computer Store when I first started out in Tech, do you still get ancient PC's that have literal mounds of dirt like I did? and are Synnex\Altech still cunts with warranties?

Have you found CP on a HDD?
>>
>>52541645
Altech is dead. Voluntary administration, bought out by leader. Not sure about synnex since we don't deal with them as much. If you still have an altech account check them out, warehouse is being cleared. Up to 80% off.

And yes, last week I had to clean out a pentium 4 775 system for a customer who refuses to upgrade until it dies. It was still running xp.

>>52541834
Wouldn't you?

>>52541995
No. And I honestly hope I don't.
>>
>>52542054
What would you do if you found CP?
