I just got the Nvidia branded ("reference" I guess?) GTX 970 a couple days ago for a good deal. I noticed that in games that aren't very GPU intensive the card sounds fine. But in games that are demanding the card is making an odd noise. It's not a "bad" sounding noise. It's just not really a normal one. Temps are usually around 75-80 C when this happens.
The sound is EXACTLY this sound, except more quiet. Can't hear it when my speakers are on:

Card needs more juice. Increase voltage.
>>52529638
Out of the box? How can I do this?
Where do you even buy reference cards? I haven't seen any in any online store I know

The 970 reference an exclusive to best buy for whatever odd reason. I decided against their EVGA card because apparently its not their "real" SSC series card. Just their normal cooler one slightly overclocked.
Clean it's fan.

Purchased the card just two days ago

Limit FPS to 59 with RTSS.
>>52529805
RTSS?
>>52529638
It's called coil whine OP. A lot of cards do this under load. It's not something you should worry about unless you find it annoying.
>>52529960
Rivatuner Statistics server. It comes bundled with MSI Afterburner.
>>52530073
Would another one do the same thing? Should I exchange for a new one?
>>52530073
Cards shouldn't be producing coilwhine below 150fps.
>>52530127
Possibly, but maybe not. You could try to exchange it for a new one, i believe coil wine is a valid reason to RMA, best buy should take it back, but there's guarantee a new one won't also whine.
>>52530147
My card whines pretty much whenever it's under load, regardless of fps. Ive had it for three years now with no issues. I pretty much always have headphones on when im playing games though, so i don't really care.
>>52530147
Unless you have vsync on.
>>52530293
There's no* guarantee
I have been looking for help with my card, I updated its drivers and everything was working well but then it suddenly blue screened on me saying Kernal_Security_Check_Failure so I checked and I uninstalled it and reinstalled my gpu. its an R9 390 and the problem was with 16.1 hot fix should I just wait for a new update and hope it does not happen again?
>>52530127
See if you can get a refund, if not, just live with the noise
Its coil whine. Had it with my evga 970
They swapped it right away
tfw can't hear very well so my 970 could sound like a plane taking off and i would never know it
>>52530376
Was windows doing something in the background?
>>52531026
nope it happened after playing xcom for 2 hours
>>52530559
GOOD FOR YOU, ANON.
>>52531044
Does it happen in other games?
>>52531161
it happened twice total before checking my drive and reinstalling an older version, the older version works fine just going to be annoying if I can never update
>>52531220
ok so it is the driver, wait for a fix anon.btw what OS?
>>52531272
I hope they fix it, I am stuck on windows 10 since it was the cheapest os I could get and I was to afraid to go for linux on my first pc build
>>52529638
Can you turn that ugly green glow off?
pls I need to know. It's important.
>>52530147
The 970 is notorious for its coil whine. Right behind the 3.5 shit in notoriety. I had a Gigabyte G1 970 and that shit whined like crazy before I got a refund.
>>52532193
Yes you can with nvidia experience or whatever their optimization software is called. You can even turn the brightness way down if you still want a hint of the lettering.
>>52532270
Thank you, anon.
>>52532320
No problem. I was thinking about opening up my two cards and cutting the line that supplied power to the leds before I figured it out. I hate it too.
>>52529638
it will probably disappear after a while (days, weeks)
