But anon, they still are if you want a solid headphone that won't snap and you don't need a amp or dac for. They are also very comfy for a headphone of it's size. The only issue they have right now is the earpads are glued to the earcups since Philips got Gibson Innovations to manufacture the headphone. This does not affect the sound or any other physical quality of the headphone. No shill, just a satisfied X2 owner.

Tell this to Sennheiser enthusiasts
>and you don't need a amp or dac for.
You wouldn't need a DAC anyways if your source is good enough. DAC has nothinf to do with power/amping.
> They are also very comfy for a headphone of it's size.
It's their only positive point, but they're quite heavy. They may become uncomfortable after some hours of listening.
> The only issue they have right now is the earpads are glued to the earcups since Philips got Gibson Innovations to manufacture the headphone.
I got two X2 and they both had this same issue. My last X2 was made by Woox, this issue has nothing to do with Gibson, it's totally random. Also this is not the only issue: dye leak, metal rings peeling off, pads can be made of some itchy material (not exactly velour).
>This does not affect the sound or any other physical quality of the headphone.

I just got an O2+ODAC, and I see in the instructions (found online) as well as various other places that it's suggested to keep the software volume setting slightly below 100% rather than at 100% - however, all of them fail to actually mention which exact percent that means. "Slightly below 100%" could mean anything from 95% to 99%.

Anyone got any recommendations or information on what the optimal percentage is?

>>
>>52530561
Absolutely positive. I find these headphones very comfortable (light, pillow-like pads) and balanced-sounding. Compared to the X2 I previously owned, they sound much clearer and much more detailed. I feel like they also have a much better dynamic range. The E10K can drive them very well (I could even say that it's maybe a too much for them). I usually never turn the knob beyond level 3 on low gain for listening to music at a decently high volume. I never enable the bass boost as well, the K702 bass is already very good imo.
>>

Why upload mp3's in VBR...

Yes, I'm an Audio Nut; FLAC or 320, I'll go as low as 128 if it's distortion-free. VBR's are notoriously filled with pops/clicks.

I'll give this a go though, because I really do love the music.

-though, I do still wonder why people rip in VBR; not like storage or connection speeds matter anymore :(

Then it is your playback software at fault. Properly encoded VBR (lame -v0) won't have such problems, unless you use old ass players that can't handle VBR properly.

Why use mp3 at all when there are far better lossy formats such as AAC that give significantly better quality (or lower filesize with the same quality) and are supported by virtually every player and device in this day and age?

They are funny headphones to listen to, as same as beats but their sound is shitty, X2 got better bass, clarity and more than neutral for having that kind of sound. I have both HD600 and X2, I usually listen with my X2 because they are fun and the HD600 are a bit boring for music, more likely for mastering and things like that.

Either, no requirements for isolation, I'll adapt and sound signature is more important.
>Comfort level

>Preferred tonal balance
I'm a mid-head, I want a sound that is mid-forward, even to the point of being aggressive. Bass should have impact but doesn't need to have insane quantity or depth, I found the HD600 bass good enough. Treble is where HD600 let me down though, I need to be excited and engaged by my music and the softness of the HD600 wasn't doing it for me. I don't think fatigue is an issue for me.

Castlevania
Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest
Castlevania III
Dracula X: Rondo of Blood
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (most of it is god tier, but especially The Tragic Prince)
Mega Man 2
Mega Man 3 (Spark Man and Top Man themes being some of my favorites)
Final Fantasy VI (most notably "Decisive Battle" and "Dancing Mad")
Final Fantasy VIII (the game is meh, but the soundtrack is god-tier - check out "The Man with the Machine Gun")
Chrono Trigger

I got mine for about $900 used from japan. I used to have a 207 lambda though. I only paid about $175 for that. You can usually grab a starter set for around $250 though if you don't have an amp. That will more than play above its weight. But the Omega frames are a step above that for sure.

Ay
>>
>>52531328
Right, I have heard the K702 be described as cold or analytical, and I definitely still want a warm sound, just not as laid back or "boring"

The DT880 don't look bad but I feel like Beyers aren't known for their mids and I've read some people describe the mids as "slightly" recessed which is a big no-no.

400i seems the best out of the three but is also around $100CAD over budget.
>>
>>52531163
probably, I don't see why they wouldn't
>>
>>52531328
>Maybe because their least expensive model is 1000$?

Not on this planet. SRS-2170 is like $475 new and about half that used.
>>
>>52531362
That's why I recommended also the K612 to you. They're considered the most neutral AKG in production and compared to the K702 they are a bit warmer, without sacrificing mids. Only downside of K612 is the non-detachable cable.
>>
>>52531417
Okay cool, I will look into them. I need to do more research on the 880 600ohm midrange and decide from there.

Plus side on the K612 is I can get a great price from a brick-and-mortar store I trust here.

Would like to find someones first hand opinion on how each sound with punk to sell me on them.
>>
>>52531297
according to windows specifications, putting it at 100% does not invoke any kind of software amplitude gain above 0db. so it's okay to do 100%, and because of this, you probably should actually use 100%

then again, they may have some other autistic reason for doing it, which i dont know what it is. you would have to ask them their reasoning
>>
>>52531593
I've seen some people say it'll cause clipping with your amp at anything but 100% and at any thing under 100%.

I highly doubt it matters.

>Plus side on the K612 is I can get a great price from a brick-and-mortar store I trust here.
K612 are really cheap basically everywhere.
>Would like to find someones first hand opinion on how each sound with punk to sell me on them.
There simply doesn't exist a headphone which universally sounds the best with punk, the same obviously applies to also other music genres. Ideally you want a neutral headphone, which accurately reproduces what's in the recording. Both HD600, DT880 250/600 ohm and K702/K612 accomplish this, despite having some sound differences. A good choice for you would probably also be the X2, but I didn't recommend it to you because it's less neutral and its mids are a bit recessed.
>>
>>52531695
I just leave mine at 100% since that's whats Schiit and Benchmark say to do.
>>
>>52531716
i too have my windows volume at 100%, for my element
>>
>>52531714
I actually have had the X2 and overall disliked it for actual music listening. I would say mids being recessed is an understatement, to me they sounded like they were recorded in a room separate from the rest of the track which just bugged me.

I get your point though, I called my guy and he said he has the K612 and he can put an order with Beyer for some 880/600s so it's in-depth research time I guess.
>>
>>52531758

You know, hate aside, Sennheisers really do have some serious issues with their construction. They're supposed to be premium headphones yet they seem to break apart like sub-$10s. I have a $20 pair of Creatives with the same form factor that ended up whipped against the wall once by a freak accident and didn't break.

Bright. Not V-shaped, not one or two narrow band peaks around a jagged valley of recessed treble. Just an upward tilt in response.
>Past headphones
HD800 - Once you get past the 6kHz peak, it's a really veiled headphone. Also too midbassy.
K702 - Peak at mid treble, add a peak around 2 kHz and low treble plunge. Deceptively midbassy and dull.
DT 880/990 - Mild/pronounced V-shape
ER-4B - One of the few purely bright things I can think of. But this is an IEM.

Others:
HE560 - Trenches around the peaks at 4-5 kHz and higher up at around double that. Has a hint of the HD 600 flavor.
T1 - Sounds too much like darker HD650/R70X plus a 9 kHz spike.
T70 - Upper mid/treble plunge, then the Beyer peaks again
SA5000 - This might have been a fit, but it's not made now.
T90 - This nearly fits. Anything with less midbass?
STAX - Aside from the ~10kHz peaking, and the usual 1.5kHz bump, these are pretty dull sounding. I do appreciate the lack of bass boost.
>>
>>52533147

Looking for some IEMs to listen to music on my phone or laptop while I'm out. I have a history of IEMs and earbuds being uncomfortable or fitting in one ear and not the other, falling out, etc. so I've tended to avoid them and go with clip-on OEMs, but I gave a pair of stock Samsung IEMs (that come with the S6) a go, and they seemed all right, and they're definitely more portable. I care very little about the sound stage as long as it werks(tm). Bluetooth would be cool to avoid cable mess and a mic would be a welcome bonus, but I can do without either of them. The Sony SBH80 seems to fit the bill perfectly, but it's a little out of my budget.

Yeah, I was one of them. Should be in the archive somewhere.

I'm not sure if this is all in my brain, but after spending more time comparing, I would say the differences I noted in my pastebin are actually more obvious than how I first heard them. So they make better complements than I thought, which is nice.

The HD600 is much softer and more cohesive in its sound, so I prefer it for acoustic, vocals, and classical. Not very "analytical" since separation and individual details stand out much more with the 400i.

On the other hand, I like the 400i for more aggressive or bass-heavy stuff that doesn't depend on "natural" timbre, such as harder rock/metal/untz music. The 400i has also gotten more comfortable for me.

Porta-pros, M50s, ATH-AD700. Just looking for a solid pair of IEMs for light travel. Considering SE215s, Soundmagic E80s or RE-400s although I'm open to any suggestions. Thinking against RE-400s because of reports of poor durability. I know that they're IEMs and all, but still.

guys i want buy a portable Fiio ffor my phone, and i will use my shure se215,and my bayerdynamic dt990pro,what model can i take? budget max 100 euros
>>
>>52541004
Got them from someone I knew and they're really falling apart.
>>
>>52541023
The pads are falling apart?? Why didn't you buy new earpads then?
>>52541005
Fiio X1 or M3. But I doubt it'll be loud enough for dt990.
>>
>>52540710
use those 100$ to buy pads for your 551
>>
>>52541056
Not just the pads. The entire thing is pretty fucked. The wire is ripping in a lot of places, and the sides of the headphones are getting all weird and gooey for some reason. Is it hard to replace the wire on these things?
>>
>tfw E10K price won't fall

Its a shame really. Well, at that price its Takstar Pro80 or Sony MDR-7506. Especially I heard sony ones are manufactured in Thailand. It should be easier to find.

between these two the piston 3s seem more appealing, but I'll check them out more closely when I get home, thanks
>>
>>52541316
Nah, you can use it portable with USB OTG cable. Moreover, it'll bypass your phone DAC. So there'll be some improvement.
>>
>>52541179
Alright thanks man. If I can't manage to fix my akg's I'll try to buy one of these. Really appreciate it.

Take a look at Zero Audio Tenore while you're at it too. Both of my recs is JDM only, so the exposure wasn't high and thus sometimes underrated.

Got Astros as a gift and have been too busy to try them out. I'll report back shortly.
>>
>>52541369
cheers, they both seem all right. I'm still leaning towards the piston 3s but if I can find a good deal on either of the other two then I'll definitely pick them up

You would have to be an idiot to spend $200 on this when they've already admitted it's from the glued batch.

Why do you think it's so cheap? This is stock clearance on a botched manufacturing run and they all probably sound like shit.

Whoever said the DT880 is comfy either doesn't know what comfy is or never wore them. Or is a girl with small ears.

First point: The inner diameter of the earpads is ~6cm. My ears are 6.5cm long, which is dead average. It constantly presses on the top and the tip of the ear, which causes a burning sensation after a while.
Second: FUCKING FLUFF. Who thought that was a good idea? If I want to cook my head, I'll put it in the oven.

I need some help /hpg/, im considering ordering a pair of akg k612s with an fiio e10 amp, but im not sure whether the 702s will be worth the extra £50 or to go with a pair of dt770/990s. I mostly listen to bassy music if that helps.

rip k7xx/dt880 drops
think those would have suited you better
I wouldn't get dt770s if you have the budget for more

I'd recommend either waiting for new sales, getting the dt880 (best of the bunch imo), getting the k612 or picking up the dt990 off massdrop

Alright thanks, if i was to get the k612s would i absolutely need an amp or could i get away with it?
>>
>>52544433
I've heard people always say they should get an amp with it

I think you COULD get away with it, but it'll be pretty bad without one, if you live somewhere where shipping is fast, you could order the k612, test them out, check the "do I need an amp" checklist (which I really should save to post when I need it) and if you need one, just order an amp and have it like the next day or so

Sensitivity on 612 is fairly low, so there is a decent chance you may want to pick one up.

K612 + fiio E10k is the safest and best option in my opinion, you can't really go wrong with that. What's your budget btw? If you're looking for a neutral headphone having extra-bass you may want a HD650 a DT880 250/600 ohm or even a HE-400i if you're willing to spend that much. If a neutral headphone isn't what you really want and all you need is a good bassy headphone, then you can also try to look into the X2, which doesn't need an amp.
