Windows 8.1 is the best version. It's like Windows 10 except actually a complete package and not an unstable, botnet piece of shit. Only morons who are completely out of the loop do not understand this.

Windows 7 is slow as fuck, virus ridden and gets less support every day.

here is a picture of every single game that supports or plans to support DX12.

By the time DX12 support actually matters, windows 10 will (hopefully) no longer be an unstable piece of shit. In the meantime, 8.1 is better.
>>
>>52499514
how hard in theory will ports between DX12 and Vulcan be?

they seem like virtually the same API (i.e., basically no abstraction layer and userspace drivers just talk to the GPU in its native command language).

Lel. 10% are still on XP, and most applications and utilities still support it, while you whine how "ancient" 7 supposedly is?

As for the botnet issue, newsflash: 7 and 8.1 have it too, unless you are playing whack-a-mole with Windows updates and constantly track which to avoid/uninstall, rinse, repeat at nauseam.

THIS JUST IN, NEW HARDWARE FEATURES REQUIRE SOFTWARE DESIGNED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT!

Seriously, anyone else remember the advanced c states introduced with Haswell, which only works with windows 8 and on? Doesn't mean Haswell won't run Windows XP if you insist on installing it but XP will never be able to take advantage of the newer power management features.

7 and 8.1 at least let you do that if you care to. 10 gives you the botnet whether you want it or not, bypasses the hosts file to make sure its "telemetry" spyware delivers its messages, and not only gives you no say in which updates to download, but doesn't even so much as give you patch notes. You literally have to block a bunch of MS IPs on your router to stop it.

as I read it, this is pretty much what this news is. I'd wager good money Win 7 will still boot, install, and run on new CPUs, it's just a few bells and whistles won't work. OEMs (HP, Dell, and so on) will probably stop driver support for their machines. Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, and Nvidia/AMD will probably continue support, since, unlike the OEMs, upgraders and home-builders are a large part of their market.

And they can easily link that to a real identity. Remember that even "anonymized" datasets can be de-anonymized with about 95% accuracy given only a couple pieces of basic demographic info. Of course if you give your real name to a MS account, or set up a payment method on their app store, or receive email tied to your identity at an Outlook account, or if MS just purchases a commercially available targeting database from any one of a hundred companies, they've tied your machine to your identity. And do you really expect them to do nothing with such a database once they have it?

>>Why exactly does it matter if they have my name, IP, and hardware in a database? Most websites already do this anyway. When you buy from Newegg are you concerned they have your real name, email address, and possibly Credit Card info?
Well, for one thing, with some basic cookie management and blocking, I can ensure that the only things Newegg knows about me are things I do on Newegg's website. Newegg doesn't know about what other websites I visit, or about anything else I do on my computer. MS is an operating system vendor. The OS necessarily sees everything that goes on on the machine, so I expect it to not say a peep about anything. For a second thing, yes, I am concerned about retail analytics. Ever read that story about how Target figured out a teenage girl was pregnant based on her shopping habits and sent her a catalog of baby shit before she'd told her parents? I avoid using plastic there and at other places as a result.

>Privacy isn't being broken though, see above.
So MS knows who you are, and has the capacity to collect data about literally everything you do on your computer. What times you use it, what programs you run, what websites you visit, and plenty else. And they don't let you turn it off. Do you really think they'd go to the trouble of collecting this information if they didn't intend to use it? Even if you trust them with it, what if the next CEO changes course in a few years, and decides to go full Google? You won't be able to tell them to forget what they know about you.

that might also be because 95 was a 9x-based version of Windows and XP was based on NT. Win 7 is NT v6.1 and Win 10 (would be) NT v6.4 . The difference between 9x and XP was more like the difference between XP/Win2000 and Vista

can someone explain how this is even going to work? so what happens if i try to install win7 when i have a system with a newer cpu? i honestly don't understand how they are going to enforce this.
>>
>>52501035
Let the companies making that software know that there's demand for them on Linux and maybe they'll respond to that. Alternately look for alternatives that support Linux or use a virtual machine or a compatibility layer for the few Windows specific things that remain.
>>
>>52498526
>Next-gen CPUs require Windows 10
Wrong. Next-gen CPUs work on Windows 10, Linux, and Macs at some point. Fucking idiots.
>>
>>52501084
Literally nothing is changing. I wonder why Microsoft even bothered mentioning this.

Imagine if you tried to install windows 95 on a modern multicore CPU. First off windows 95 doesn't know how to handle most of the new instruction set extensions so those wont ever be used. Secondly windows 95 doesn't understand the concept of multiple cores so the additional cores wont be used either. Fancy things like speedstep/coolnquiet, turbo boost/core, SMT threads, etc wont be used. Everything else will run like usual but the performance of the system wont be optimal because the OS is holding everything back.

>>
>>52501169
>there's no real benefit for me as to use linux though
You avoid all the end of support issues that are affecting Windows 7.

>many stuff like flash (the editor) and Melodyne editor doesn't even have a working alternative on linux.
We went through the same kinds of issues years ago with creative stuff that was only available for Amiga or Classic MacOS. Our tools for working around those kinds of legacy applications are a lot more mature today than they were.

Both of the programs you mention though are available for MacOS so perhaps that's your best option for the software you want to run and ongoing support?

>The irony being, they skipped an entire version number, including bumping the kernel version from the original 6.4 to 10.0. The moment sales and marketing takes over authority over kernel versioning, you should know that something is terribly wrong.

Thats not why, older programs for some god forsaken reason require a certain kernel version to work without causing all hell to break loose, they explained this when 7 first came out (or vista, but the point remains the same)

This actually makes perfect sense... It means silicon manufacturers can finally get away from old legacy x86 instruction set compatibility/emulation and make more truly RISC based chips ala ARM. The result will be much more efficient processing.
>>
>>52501695
Pretty much, it makes perfect sense that Microsoft would start to drop support and put more efforts on Windows 10.
>>
>>52500932
>pretty recent thing really. 2009 was not long ago.
Yes it was, 7 years is a pretty long time. Even more so considering 8 and 10 have added more features and made improvements on performance and memory management. If you hate the direction Microsoft is going then switch to linux already.

if you install Classic Shell, Windows 8.1 feels exactly like Windows 7 does, just with a mildly different theme applied. Everything that works on 7 works on 8.1, and there are a huge amount of background performance enhancements added over Windows 7.

You know how they say every other version of windows is bad? XP good, Vista bad, 7 good, 8 bad? Well 8.1 (NT 6.3) was the next version of Windows after 8 (NT 6.2). Not Windows 10.

The 9 years between 1995 and 2004 seem more than twice as long, to say the least.

Yea right, with bullshit Metro UI and botnet "telemetry" being at the forefront of these, I presume.

Nah, you misunderstood that. They skipped the name "Windows 9" because some old software assumed Windows 9x if such a string was detected. The kernel version change on the other hand was completely arbitrary and artificial.

>he uses any kind of windows
nigger it doesn't matter, the nt kernel has hardly changed over time, shit network stack, shit graphics stack, shit fpu stack, shit scheduling, etc. W7 at least was somewhat intuitive. With W10, it feels like you're fucking using PSN with a mouse, on top of that, they collect information to advertise back to you, forget about compatibility for a bunch of applications, and only minorly improved performance. The majority of headway M$ is working on right now is competing with Google, and a lot of that neglect shows in W10.
>15s boot time is impressive
Technically it's not even a reboot though, they load the image into RAM and spin up the drives again, it's more like suspending.
>>
>>52500037
Open CMD and type:
 shutdown /s /t 0

This will shut the machine completely down including the kernel. Start the machine and time the boot time. If 10 is anything like 8 it will take quite a bit longer than normal.

That also applied to the kernel version numbering system as well.

It's not as simple as that. You can't just take and combine code randomly.

But it is true that they are intentionally gimping user experience with 8 and 10 (and that was not the case with all their previous operating system, including Vista and ME).

I'd take just windows 7 being worked on without any major changes.

So how exactly are they going to prevent new cpu's from running old versions of windows?
are they just not going to send you windows updates? cause that sounds like a Win-Win to me
anything farther than that would just be shooting themselves (the hardware manufacturers) in the foot

Its going to be pretty embarrassing when all the bombshell blog posts surface that the latest and greatest in computer hardware can't even run windows 98
>>
>>52503945

How are hardware vendors trapped in to anything? You can order a new Dell with Ubuntu
>>
>>52503870
Well it's not so much ignored as is 'Didn't get paid to use OpenGL'
When microsoft is handing out chunks of cash to use its windows-vendor-locking APIs there's no incentive to use the alternative.
>>
>>52504000
Microsoft has a history of doing it. You can buy Dell with Ubuntu today, when Ubuntu is clearly is not a competitor for Windows. When alternative operating OSes could become a thing, Microsoft threatened vendors into only shipping Windows.

>>52504006
And that's exactly what I expect to happen. I hope it won't. But realistically, I can't imagine such a world when it does not happen.
>>
>>52503864
to me Microsofts new business model for Windows is the most compelling argument for console gaming.

that and the fact that all games for a specific console are guaranteed to work on that console, exactly as as well as it did for the developers.

Eh this is just fanservice. When it comes out that people STILL aren't using windows 10, drivers will come out for windows 7.
Can you imagine intel being okay with cutting their potential market by 70%?
>>
>>52504104

>70%

That's a very high estimate considering normies don't upgrade their computers. They just buy new computers and they don't care what OS is on them as long as its Windows.

I mean that win 10 has 30% market share so that'd be a cut of 70% for someone who can only sell products that work with win10
