Because the point of that thing is to have LONG TERM off-line external storage that you can use to back-up game installations/music/video media/porn every month or few months, and leave it alone for a few months unless the need arises to take something from it.

I did this. I had to either buy a NAS (or san) or just add disks to my server and keep it always on. My server pulls 60W when idling so that wasn't bad. I just slammed a RAID10 array there and now I have pretty gud vm storage
