It sounds like the motherboard isn't properly adjusting the fan to compensate for thermal performance. Just a random thought, did you plug it into the CPU fan slot and not just a regular fan slot?
>>
>>52475668
why would you want a passively cooled GPU ? they are overpriced and pretty bad

>>52475719
They shut the fuck up. I want a silent system.
It's not for gaming or anything, just a HTPC.

I'm looking for an upgrade to my Asus T100. Can someone recommend me the best lightweight, under 13" hybrid Laptop/Tablet for around £500? Really I just want something with a touchscreen.
I'm leaning towards the Lenovo Yoga 700 because it's fanless and shit and won't warm up my lap whilst I'm using it but just wondering if the performance might be a bit shit as a result. I could live with it if it's not too bad, it uses a Core M3-6y30 processor. Not really a fan of the Surface and after something that can handle the occasional more intensive task
>>
>>52475696
Yep, I did. I read on Toms Hardware forums that this is a common problem with Intel coolers, due to it working only at 12 volts the motherboard tries different voltages before it gets up to 12. But, usually it gets the right voltage after 30-40 seconds, but I just booted up my PC and as I'm typing this post it still hasn't started spinning.
CPU temps are ok though, 40C without a cooler running with chrome on is fine.
>>
>>52475744
How about you buy a normal GPU and set the fan speed to 30%. That is silent before you argue.
>>
>>52475756
>>52475696
>Quick update:
I just noticed that when my CPU hits a temp higher than 40 degrees the cooler starts spinning at 2700rpm and wont slow down. I have an asus mb, but I don't remember an option in the bios saying "Start cooler only after 40C". Should I just update my bios?
>>
>>52475856
Sure, you should be updating it anyways though
>>
>>52475744
sounds like you don't need a GPU. Intel graphics is fine for non-gaming and home theater.

passively cooled GPUs are garbage. just buy second hand if you really want that, so that you can get at least some decent price
pic is my configuration for my CPU
as you can see, my fan only turns on when the system is 30ºC or above. You can set this to a higher temperature like 40ºC or even 50ºC and it will still be safe.

Need help with streaming videos from http source uaing vlc.

So, the situation is, I'm trying to stream video from a server using vlc. The site is password protected, so I have to enter my username and password in order to watch the video. The problem is, the stream will stop itself randomly and after that it asks the username and password again. After I enter them, the stream starts from the beginning. I played around with the buffer settings in vlc, but I can't get it working. I can download the files and play them locally, but streaming them would be more convinient. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Sorry for long post, and english is not my first language so I hope you understand.

that depends on the bitrate and framerate you want
3 Mbps should be enough for 720p
maybe like 5 Mbps ?
I have 10 Mbps upload and never had any problem streaming 1080p60

I swear it's my CPU making the awful grinding sound, even after changing out the fan.

With constant crashes to BSOD stating a clock interrupt was not received on the secondary processor I think it's time to retire it, but I'm curious about what is making it malfunction and possibly be making weird sounds with supposedly no moving parts.

It's possible my MOBO is sending funny out-of-sync signals to the fan because of its readings of the X4 compared to my old X2 which is causing the sound, only thing I can think of.

480p lol
either that or some sub-par framerate like 15 or 10 and a low bitrate that causes everything to be blocky
>>

if the website is on this list :
https://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl/blob/master/docs/supportedsites.md
you can use youtube-dl to return a direct stream URL using the -g option.

it also has authentication options.

100kbps is only 12.5KB/s - less than dual-link ISDN from the 90s. You will be able to send audio at a pretty good quality, but you have far too little upstream to be able to send video at anything above 90s-era Yahoo! Webcam VGA slideshow/blockfest quality.

You need a bigger pipe. That's a joke: that's just three analogue modems glued together, at best.

It's not on the same network, it's a cheap shared box I rent from seedhost.eu. Downloading smaller files isn't really a problem, but I recently watched a 19 gb movie and downloading it took quite a bit, so if I could stream video I wouldn't have to wait for the file to download.

you're not supposed to be plugging any power strip into another power strip. However, if you're mindful of how many amps you're pulling through one socket, you should be fine. I am doing a group project with around 6 classmates, and we need some sort of database for storing user information. None of us have very much experience with database technology and we have around 8 weeks to complete our project, so we need something with a pretty small learning curve. We don't need something very feature rich, as we really do not have very much information that we need to actually store externally.

If i'm not mistaken it should be visible in "apply update from external storage" menu, but all that's there are some empty android folders, LOST.DIR, DCIM and the like.
Is it because it's not rooted or does this fucker not recognize sd card at all, and his "external storage" is really his internal memory?
It displays the same folders with or without the card inserted.

What is with the current trend to rewrite everything in Go? Are you using par/par2?
In that case separate files are generated (.par/.par2).
par2 is (iirc, it's been a while since i've done this) equally spaced so you can repair any 10% corrupted _blocks_ given provided that the corruptions are equally spaced as well.
>>
>>52481354
It is a), your data is only rotated to align the principal axis.

As for the second question, did you even look into your classification problem?
If you transform the feature space differently for each (labeled / training) class, how the fuck should your algorithm know which transformation to apply for unlabeled points?
ergo; no, once for the entire training group. train on transformed data (thats what its for).
Then transform each testing point and apply your classifier to transformed feature space.
(Is this an mlmi course?)

Assuming I don't have a specialized need for a higher number, would two partitions be enough for general use in Windows 7? It's mainly for organization that I'm looking into it; I'm going to reinstall the OS on my laptop soon and, looking through my folders, I now realize what a horrid clusterfuck my current organizational scheme is. (It's a 1TB drive; my thought was 100GB for OS and applications and the rest for other stuff.)

(That and, should I get around to putting Linux on this machine [I've tested the waters in VirtualBox before], it'll be easier to have all of my media off in its own section already. Maybe partitioning it this way will help motivate me to switch.)
>>

There's no point in partitioning for that reason. If you ver want to move stuff between artitions instead of being a simple move, it's now like copying between two separate HDD's, pain in the ass.

ubuntu is very easy to use but a bit bloated, xubuntu has xfce which can be made very pretty and is lightweight but out of the box is a bit ugly. xubuntu is also a bit bloated as it's based on ubuntu. Debian is a bit less "it just werks" but is still pretty easy to use, and is a lot more lightweight. Mint is another easy to use distro, it comes by default with cinnamon, which is a nice compromise between xfce and unity (ubuntu de).

RAID0 - shit loads faster, but if just 1 drive physically dies/corrupt/deleted, all your shit is gone, backups are required even more frequently.
RAID5 and 6- similar to RAID1 but more drives can die before you are fucked.
RAID10 = RAID0 + RAID1.
RAID helps protect from drives deaths, YOU STILL NEED TO BACKUP YOUR STUFF. RAID does not protect you from Corruption, file deletion, malware and more, just for drive deaths.

for some reason vim leaves behind a file called "filename~" whenever I edit a file where its name is filename. How do I stop it from doing this?

Going to go the easier route and say get an add-on that changes the "new tab page" to a site you choose, then spend 15 mins watching YouTube on how to code HTML and make yourself the most simple website that is 100% blank but with a black background. Something like <html> <bgcolor = FFFFFF> </html>.

I'm getting a problem in Linux Mint on my Acer Aspire ES1-531. I've set it to suspend when I close the lid of the laptop but after a while it will wake itself up and starting cooking itself in my bag and eating up battery life. What can I do to stop that?

If you install Linux it should automatically install GRUB to let you boot to either your first OS or Linux. Same with Apple which has Bootcamp. Don't even have to go near the Bios.
>>
>>52487711
So i just install something (gentoo for example) and it installs grub? So no extra hassle? Do i need to remove my primary os' drive for the installation in case of something fucking up?
>>
>>52487517
Do you have enough swap space? Suspending takes a lot of space, also check settings for if it should wake up after a certain amount of time.
>>52487549
It is that simple, safety tip, before installing new os to new drive, make sure to disconnect your original drive, just so you don't install to that one by mistake.
>>52487644
Motherboards mean too much. If you are going to use a graphics card, make sure your motherboard has at least a "PCIe 3.0 16x slot". Ideal in all situations are at least 2 " SATA 6Gb/s" ports, for your drives.
>>
>>52487764
Not remove, just disconnect your main one. Doing this will prevent accidentally messing your main one up, just to be on the safe side. But yes when you install GNU/Linux it will come with 'GRUB' which will let you choose what to boot to each time.
>>
>>52487644
Just about anything will do if it has the correct socket and all the slots and connections you need. But if you're planning to OC go for a z97 chipset board.
>>
>>52487830
Neat. Was thinking going with mint for work stuff but now i'm tempted to try actually installing gentoo.

You could use -d to change the delay and see the use over the delay length. Otherwise you could try piping the output out or making a script. But this is just the only one I personally know about, there may be more out there.

Got 4.1 gigs of swap space. Where are the settings for automatic wake up?
>>
>>52487914
Sorry I meant motherboards do NOT mean too much. DDR4 is the future, but it will not work for your CPU, don't worry though the difference between DDR3 and DDR4 is like 5FPS in games at best, and in normal web browsing and stuff means literally no difference. What are you doing with your comp? Games? Web browsing?
>>
>>52487962
for games, yea. And I wanted to set it up so that it would work well with games in the future. I didn't realize that it didn't work with my CPU, DDR3 it is then.

I was looking at this one - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130801&cm_re=motherboard_lga_1150-_-13-130-801-_-Product

Not too familiar with mint but look in settings. I also found this if it applies to you: http://www.linuxandlife.com/2012/07/how-to-customize-power-management-in.html?m=1 . Also there seems to be a popular program for laptop battery management called 'TLP', looks to have the settings you are looking for.

I'm looking for a new 1440p monitor and don't want to pay out my ass. I currently have a qnix that has no dead pixels, overclocks to 110hz and has some backbleeding on the bottom right. The problem is I took off the stock stand and when I hooked it up to it's VESA mount I fucking used super glue because I was too stupid to find some washers and ever since my monitor has been at a stupid fucking angle that bugs the piss out of me.

I was looking at the monoprice 27" 1440p monitor, is it good?

I got a new fractal design R5 and it comes with a built in fan controller. Should I bother using it or just plug the fans into the motherboard for auto control?
>>
>>52487952
Also if you have 4GB of RAM you will want at least 6GB of swap space. See graph in middle of here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq
>>52487993
Looks great!
>>
>>52488117
Minimal difference, I would have the fan splitter plugged into the CPU_fan header with everything else plugged into that, in this way when your CPU gets hot the whole system will take notice.
>>52487854
Go for it, takes some work but it is fun. And if Gentoo is say too much a pain, you can just install any other GNU/Linux distribution over it
>>52487892
Go for an R9 380. You'll be much more happy.

makemkv to decrypt it and dump the title(s) to single mkv's (no transcoding), ffmpeg if you want to compress those further (say to make smaller h.264 versions)

Okay so I'm building a gaming rig(I've built only one before myself) for my friend and I'm saving money buy just letting him use my old HD but I have a few questions on the install

(Windows 7 home premium 64-bit)
Do I need to completely whipe it using the og pc first?

I don't have the disk but I have my product key so can I put win on an external HD or does it have to be from the dvd drive/USB stick? To boot from bios

What will happen if I just rip it out and plug it in and see what happens? I'm fairly certain it won't work but I'm curious.
