Is it possible to get a good/okay quality used laptop for around $100?

Yes, a ThinkPad.

It really depends on what you plan on using it for.

web/3D programming and condensed matter physics simulation.

I bought a R500 for that.
It's a bit slow but it has a nice big screen and all the bells and whistles I need.

Nothing fancy or drive heavy, but it should be able to play videos or basic shit without a problem. I really just want a cheap portable workstation.

You can either get a really early Intel core or a really late Core 2 Duo/Quad

Any recommended sites?

What kind of 3d? If you want to go high-poly, or render photorealistic images, you need a good cpu.

Thinkpad x200/x200s
x201/x201s if you're lucky

You can probably get a decent deal on eBay. Just throw some reasonable offers at some wholesellers/resellers and see if they bite.

I got a used thinkpad t420 in mint condition for $100 on eBay.
You might have to search for awhile

you can build up a nice x200 for that, an okay x201, or a beat-to-shit, half dead x220.

I recommend the x200 route so you can get a NO HDD one without issues and still have enough leftover to get a new OEM 9-cell + power adapter + small SSD if you stretch the budget a bit.

That route's exactly what I did. Posting from an x200 with 4gb ram, 60Gb SSD, new OEM 9-cell, OEM power adapter. My total was ~$115 all built up. Would have been closer to ~$130 if I went with a bigger, name brand SSD like those ~$50 128GB sandisks

The cheap power adapters work fine too but the cords aren't as long which is sort of annoying

But if they all accept, you are liable for all of them
