Created a new thread because I can't find one. Dunno what the last one was.

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Which of the X series tablets should I get?
>>

I have an X60 but can't stand the resolution.

Between an X60, T60, or X200; which should I buy? I have an offer to buy any of the three from a friend.

Erhm, let me rephrase.
What would be the biggest tradeoff between the three?

I keep 6 or 7 new Thinkpads in my trunk at all times. The keyboard and sturdy case make for great traction if you get stuck in the snow. If that doesn't work, call AAA on the ol' Iphone.

Anyone know a good place to buy a battery I can get more than 4 hours of use time out of on a thinkpad x201? I bought one a while ago and I only get ~2 hours, but it's a 6-cell so meh.

I've seen some x200 listed on Ebay saying they have a locked bios password. Is there a workaround for thinkpad bios passwords or is it going to be impossible to crack and you'd be stuck just salvaging the rig for parts?

>>
>>52430673
No feasible way to get around it.

>jamal give it back
>>
>>52430673
I've acquired two bios locked computers and the first I was able to rewrite portions of the bios with CPQAMT tool (It was an HP/Compaq laptop) and the other it was literally just the company name which I found on a sticker on the back

>Return to SQT if found

If neither of those are an option, you can always replace the bios chip.

I would just install an OS on another PC, swap that drive onto the locked bios and hope it boots fine.

Otherwise, its pretty hard to do, removing the CMOS battery could make the board SOL too.
>>

I found this thread http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2191277 where it mentions removing the CMOS battery for the x200 to clear the password. If I get an x200 i want to try making it libreboot anyways. If i'm planning on replacing the bios with libreboot does the locked bios even matter?

If windows 10 is installed on a thinkpad is it bonet forever? I like the idea of having the open to dual boot with linux as my main OS but i don't want to have windows 10 botnetting me. I'll add that while you can technically use a quadcore in the T420, its cooling was never designed to handle it and you'll probably have to use very conservative settings to avoid overheating. I think the cooler for iGPU models is slightly more capable, but you obviously won't be able to use that with a dedicated graphics model.
>>
thinkpads are fucking shit and should be discontinued as an apology by lenovo for what they've done
>>
>>52430581
>when we all clearly agree the Yoga is the Macbook for Lenovo.
So that is a good thing, then? since besides their overpricedness and their lol-no-repari-for-youness, the macbooks are actually really great machines.

And it seems, like lenovo (or rather the used market) has fixed the overpriced issue. I can get pic related for 500 Ürobucks. should I?

I need a new-ish ultraportable, and I would also like a tablet for reading and anotating (mostly pdfs of scientific articles, so the standard 10" size is a bit small, maybe!?), and a corei3 (isnt that actually even a fairly new generation), 8GB of RAM, 14" IPS screen (bit low res, but still OK), inteld HD5500 (isnt that also quite capable?) and a trackpoint for 1.6kg and that price seems quite good.

To good to be true? Other chinkpad ultrabooks of the same or older generation (X1, T440s) start at 800+€, for way lower specs, so there must be something wrong with the Yoga?

so wait for the new X1/T460s next month, so that the *40 Generation gets another bit cheaper, and grab an T440s + a 10" tablet for a total of 100€?

My x220 I just ordered off ebay came with a dock.
What does this button do and why is the LED next to it red?
>>
>>52433326
If its the same as with the X200 (which is safe to assume), it is the button/light for removing/unmounting the dock.

There is this large lever next to it, which detaches the dock from the machine, and you can always use that, however, depending on what you are doing, your system might not like it.
so you press the button first, sending the system an "unmount" command, and when the light turns green, it is unmountend, and can safely be removed.

Oh and, I doubt I'll do any gaming but If I do I'll probably do TF2 and emulators (DS,GBA).

Doubt it can be as bad as my current laptop, http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-E1-571-6888-Laptop-Windows/dp/B00AYT8H02
>>
>>52435514
It doesn't seem to have the IPS panel, you can get a better deal on your local craiglist. But if that's your only choice, which I doubt, go for it. You will then get to know what man's computer looks like.

As for your TF2, yeah ultra low settings and overheating. DS emulator can CPU intensive depending on the game, I doubt you'll get a smooth experience.
>>
>>52435397

X220 or T420. I prefer my T420 since the screen is bigger plus higher in resolution.

TN panel is preferred if you use it in the wild.

Which model (Thinkpad or Dell Latitude) has the best screen? I has a fairly powerful xeon based workstation and want to pair it with a lightweight laptop. CPU or RAM don't matter since I only use it as a dumb terminal, but I really want to have a nice screen because I will look at it all day.
>>
>>52435839
>>It doesn't seem to have the IPS panel
>Explain?
Thinkpads are known for having notoriously bad screens, if you opt to get the default, low res TN panel (which most used ones have, because office drones apparently dont need a good screen), instead of the optional, more expensive, higher res IPS panel.
>>
>>52436102
So basically IPS is better, but how much better are we talking about for what I am going to do with it?

Also, is getting a T520 better than a X220? googling and looking trough ebay they,
-Have a 1080p display unlike the x220
-Cost about the same

Being able to see something from the side, vs seeing nothing and such stuff. I am on a low res TN, and I hate it (also doesnt help that the screen is old and dark) but I can still work on it. Still my next machine must have a high(ish) res IPS.
>Also, is getting a T520 better than a X220?
They dont really compare. Old school ultraportable vs. boat anchor. And 1080p aint that high res enymore, when you stretch it to 15 inches.

>>52436222
why would you want to do that? They are where they are supposed to be…
Switch CTRL and ALT, for the only sane CTRL placement.
And the BIOS option was only included with the *20 series, if I remember correctly.

My current employer gave me a T420 for work and I think it sucks ass. It underperforms really badly and I'm not even using it for development, I just connect to a remote machine via RDP and it still manages to chug when doing simple stuff like opening explorer folders.

Hey guys, you've kind of infected me with the whole used laptop idea... I was of the opinion that laptops were surely crap when bought used but I guess they're not too complicated to tinker with.

I want to jump on the ThinkPad badwagon, but Dell, HP and Acer (Travelmate) are also valid options for me.

One model I haven't seen mentioned here is the Z60m... Has anybody had experience with this model? Would you buy it if you had the chance and what would be its price in the US?

T420 or Latitude E6420? The Latitude is $185 vs $209.

It'd be for a relatively computer illiterate friend of mine who's currently using an ancient space heater of an HP with a battery that's probably gonna melt through his table in the next couple of months.

Also would you buy from refurb.io?

Hey /g/, got a brand new battery for my t420 (70+).
The indicator of battery life is kinda weird, which is normal I suppose seeing I just changed it but I wondered if I needed to do something to "calibrate" it or if it will just regulate itself? Also what are some good ideas to improve battery life as much as possible? I'm running ubuntu (gnome) 14.04 and I don't care much about performances if I can squeeze some extra battery life out of it.

had my T420i turn up today, and it's much nicer to type on than my T400, just annoyed that i'm stuck with the i3-2370m until i can sell my i7-2630qm for a i7-2640m, as the 2630 caused a lot of coil whine and i couldn't turn turbo off, and also a little pissed that the bluetooth card refuses to be picked up in any OS, and that the display is 1366x768 so i'll have to upgrade that soon as i'm going to miss the 1440x900 that was on my T400.

>>52430403
>>52441322
I realize that I did not answer your question: the t60's build quality is the last of it's kind, the screen is a solid magnesium shell, as well as the rollcage. The x60 I do not have a lot of experience with, but iirc it doesn't have a rollcage and the screen is a plastic shell, but don't quote me on that. The x200 I know has a plastic screen and no rollcage. The lack of a rollcage makes the x series lighter, but less durable and much less solid feeling. All of these thinkpads have libreboot support, except certains builds of the t60, if it has a 1280x1024 screen screen has a Radeon gpu, it will not work. The x series is 12 inches, so if you don't plan on taking it anywhere frequently, it might be annoying. The x200 has a widescreen display which annoys the hell out of me, so the x60's smaller screen will go farther. Finally, the60 series is old, the x60 might be unbearably slow, but a $30 cpu upgrade in the t60 will help considerably if you feel it too slow.

The T410 is my only thinkpad. It came with 4GB, kept it like that but upgraded to an SSD. Even though it only has SATA2 it still boots everything fast.

I also ordered a new keyboard, the NMB one which is quite better than the mushy Alps and it came with antibacterial coating.

Here's some real cons, no bullshit. Coming from an owner of six memepads to date.
>heavier and bulkier than most other laptops
>stupidly expensive to buy new
>unimpressive cooling and screens on anything smaller than the 15" models
>retarded default fan settings, fan normally won't even turn on until the CPU hits 65C or something like that. TPFC and thinkfan exist to solve this problem, fortunately
>"dated" appearance won't earn you any normie points, will be constantly explaining that the lelnovo computers that had preloaded spyware are a wholly separate division from Thinkpads
>shitty design decisions by lelnovo have made them progressively worse over time, not as bad as some exaggerate but the quality difference between a T60 and a T420 is very clear when you own both, I can only imagine how bad it is for even newer models
>wifi cards are BIOS whitelisted, you need to use a custom BIOS if you want to use another card besides the default options
>no single "best" Thinkpad, all models have compromises somewhere
>bad market outside of US, but I suppose that's true of most tech

As for why there's a general, they're very /g/-friendly laptops. As someone so eloquently put it in a /tpg/ long past, Thinkpads have really good "open that bitch up"-ability. Some models support libreboot for the freetards among us, and they have good Linux support in general. There's also a sizable modding community around them, with creations such as "Frankenpads" where two Thinkpads are combined into one featuring the best of both models, and various BIOS mods to extend the lifespan of models, such as Middleton's BIOS that enables SATA II support, removes the wifi whitelist, and grants access to some other useful features for *61 generation Thinkpads.

Not the best choice, not really. I couldn't point you in the right direction but the thing is that Thinkpad GPUs are workstation GPUs, not your usual consumer Geforce/Radeon cards. Their drivers are optimized for CAD and things like that, not vidya, so you see worse performance than you'd get out of the equivalent consumer card.

That said, look at the W510, W520, or T430. Any of them should be good enough to do what you want. Of the three, the W520 will have the best CPU and GPU performance (make sure you get one with the Quadro 2000M, not the 1000M), but is the heaviest (same as W510) and most expensive. W510 will be the cheapest, but CPU performance and battery life are the worst. The T430 will have the least GPU performance as it only has an entry-level NVS card while the W series pack high-end Quadros, but it will be the most portable and have the best battery life of the three by a long shot. It's also worth noting that the W models have far better screens than the T430, with much better color accuracy and up to 1080p resolution. T430 is limited to 1600x900 and won't be anything impressive to look at.

Z60 laptops are widescreen, SATA HDD versions of the T43(p), it is the second laptop produced by Lenovo after the X41 Tablet.

M or p for 15"
T for 14"
E is shit... Worst/basic specs
Build wise, they are like the L series, not as strong as T or X, maybe better than E series.

Enthusiast like these models, 'p' models can come with WUXGA displays which are great, I had an WSXGA+ model and it's nice.
Some had an optional titanium lid instead of the typical black finish.
Z61 models are a T60 laptop, there is no T61 Z series equivalent.

I have more of a general laptop question, I hope you don't get mad.

So I borrowed a laptop from a friend, because I started to work night shifts and got lots of spare time. It's not a top tier laptop, but it's pretty good, like 2 years old.

I played some vidya, and I was suprised how loud and hot it got. After 2 hours the exhaust vents were hot enough probably burn you if you held hand there for too long, and so did the keyboard.

So basically my question is, how well are laptops designed to handle thermal stress during long periods of time?

I was thinking of maybe getting one, and using as desktop replacement but thinking of letting the laptop run for 10 hours + a day with this being like 6+ hours under stress doesn't seems to healthy for a hardware.

And my old desktop CPU never really got hotter than 55c, fan ran pretty quiet too (GPU as well).
>>
I tried to upgrade my T60 from XGA to UXGA, got the screen installed, and it doesn't work. No image, no light, even Thinklight won't turn on. Do I have to replace the inverter board too? Someone said I didn't have to, but the screen isn't working so I don't see any other possibility.
>>
>>52452151
must just have a single tiny fan over the CPU. they're not really made to be pushed hard 24/7 unless you get a workstation
you can get a laptop cooler that sits under it i guess but i don't have any experience with those
>>
>>52452151
Varies. The rise of the chiclet-keyboard-shoved-into-chassis (note: does not apply to ThinkPads, not even the chiclet keyboard ones) design is a contributor to hot keyboards
The hot air coming out of the heatsink isn't really a bad thing I guess - it means a combination of hardware using a fair bit of power, the heatsinks actually doing their job and the fan speed still being a bit low
It's an inevitable consequence of being a laptop so don't lose sleep over it unless you tip into the 90s on a regular basis. Besides, it'll throttle if it gets too hot for its liking anyway

As long as the actual temperatures aren't too bad then it should be alright. I force my X220t to export pictures in Lightroom and IDC for hours on end and it hasn't shit the bed yet.
